Cut court jury size to clear Covid backlog, says Labour in descent to dribbling insanity

Blinding justice: cut jury sizes to seven and save time, says Labour’s David Lammy. Maybe it would, but it would almost certainly prejudice the result of difficult cases.

There is a reason we have 12 people in court juries and the idea of changing that number just to get through court cases faster is an offence to justice.

Labour’s shadow justice secretary, David Lammy, wants to resurrect so-called “wartime juries” of seven rather than 12 members, to speed up the process.

And the only casualty will be justice.

Why not just announce that anybody accused of a crime will be automatically declared guilty? That would save time. And that’s the intention here, right?

“Victims of rape, murder, domestic abuse, robbery and assault are facing delays of up to four years because of the government’s failure to act,” Mr Lammy said.

Right. And so are people who have been wrongly accused of those crimes.

Waiting for justice can be extremely stressful. Trust me – I know!

But it is better to let the wheels of justice grind slow and smooth than to risk even the possibility of injustice.

This plan would open the door to injustice, just to save a bit of time.

So I can’t believe I’m writing this, but I actually agree with the Tories that there should be no tinkering with the system at this time.

The justice system already gets enough flak for failing the public. There’s no justification for laying it open to even more.

This is what Black Lives Matter meant to US police: wait a while, then shoot them in the back

Point blank: (white) Wisconsin police officers were filmed shooting Jacob Blake in the back is he sat in his car. His children, also in the car, saw everything.

So much for all the protesting and solidarity earlier this summer. American police are still shooting to kill black people for no apparent reason.

It seems clear that they will continue to do so until force is used to stop them.

And how can that happen when they have the guns, and the name of the law – if not the letter of it – behind them?

The victim in this instance is Jacob Blake, of, Kenosha, Wisconsin, who was apparently walking back to his car after breaking up a fight between two women when police shot him in the back seven times, at point-blank range.

He may never walk again.

His children were also in the car and saw the police officers shooting their father in the back.

The shooting provoked a mass demonstration in which hundreds of people marched through the streets to gather outside the Kenosha County Public Safety Building, chanting: “No justice, no peace!”

Wisconsin’s Democrat governor, Tony Evers, also condemned the shooting. He said: “Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries.”

“While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.

“We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives in our country—lives like those of George Floyd, of Breonna Taylor, Tony Robinson, Dontre Hamilton, Ernest Lacy, and Sylville Smith.”

Family members have appealed for “healing”.

It seems clear that systemic racism is alive and well in the US police forces.

They listened and watched while the Black Lives Matter protests against the killing of George Floyd took place around the world – including in the UK – and then they shrugged and carried on shooting black people.

That’s not law enforcement. It’s racism. And if we really want to eradicated it, we need more than honeyed words from old men in expensive suits

Tory economic policies at work: Britain falls another place in world rankings

Theresa May visiting India last year. Who knows? She may have been buying shares in Indian companies; people like her know how to land on their feet [Image: Getty].

This is the result of Conservative economics; they simply don’t know how to run a country.

All that tommyrot about the nation’s economy being like a household budget was an indication of the way the wind was blowing.

But those of us who knew it was nonsense didn’t expect the Tories themselves to believe it.

Well, it seems they do.

And Brexit will make matters worse – the unforeseen and unwanted result of an internal squabble within the Conservative Party.

It will weaken the economy to an extent we do not yet know. The prediction in the Mirror article, quoted below, is that it won’t be as bad as many expect and the UK will bounce back above France (while remaining below India), to be the world’s number six economy again.

But you’d be a fool to expect that under a Conservative government.

India has leapfrogged Britain and France to become the world’s fifth biggest economy.

The Asian giant seized the spot as the UK prepares for Brexit, according to the 2018 World Economic League Table.
