Boris Johnson and Donald Trump DID discuss selling the NHS – as Jeremy Corbyn said

Buddies: Boris Johnson and Donald Trump really were discussing the sale of a privatised NHS to firms in the United States, it seems – while dishonestly accusing Jeremy Corbyn of lying when he exposed the plan.

Here’s a revelation…

… except it isn’t; some of us have known about it for years…

(In fact, let’s have a bit of video of the moment we were told…)

… but for those who refused to accept the evidence then, let’s go over it again quickly now (from the Byline Times article:

Boris Johnson privately discussed privatising the NHS with Donald Trump, according to a new biography of the former Prime Minister.

The claim… suggests that the former PM asked Trump not to publicly mention their discussions as they could create “mischief” if they were to become widely known.

However, he suggested that they could privately discuss it together.

“Some people in my party and other parties might make mischief if you talk about doing that, Donald,” Johnson told him. “Let’s talk about it all you like in private when you’re here, but we can keep it to ourselves.”

Claims of secret talks between the two countries about privatising the NHS were denied at the time.

Johnson’s Government faced allegations in 2019 of secretly planning to privatise the National Health Service as part of a post-Brexit trade deal with the US. At the time, then Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn published official documents suggesting UK officials had been in secret trade talks with US firms about the NHS.

The documents suggested that America was seeking “total market access” to the UK’s health service after Brexit.

Johnson’s Government dismissed the claims at the time, insisting the NHS would always remain “off the table” in talks with the US.

So there you have it.

Jeremy Corbyn was right about plans to privatise the NHS and sell it off to the United States, and Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and the rest of the Tories were themselves lying when they called him a liar for mentioning it.

Or so the evidence states. I’d like to see any hard facts from Johnson, Truss, or indeed anyone else that can refute it.

Trump acquitted in second impeachment trial – but not by the court of public opinion

Did anybody think Donald Trump would be found guilty by the Republican-dominated US Senate?

Impeached for the second time in his presidency – for inciting the Capitol riot in January that led to the deaths of five people – the evidence was considered by the 100-strong Senate, whose membership is evenly balanced between Republicans (Trump’s party) and Democrats.

For Trump to be convicted, a simple majority was not enough; the rules state that two-thirds of the Senate would have to find against him.

And here’s the result:

Final vote tally 57-43 but Senate fails to achieve two-thirds majority needed to convict former president of incitement.

Seven Republicans voted against their now-former president but it wasn’t enough. The others supported Trump.

It is suggested that they would have done so, no matter what evidence was put before them. That is a matter for their consciences.

The court of public opinion is another matter, though.

And the reaction of the people seems clear:

“The only thing easier to buy in the USA than a gun is a Republican Senator.”

Fair comment?

With days left in his presidency, Donald Trump is to be impeached out of it

And a good thing, too.

After Donald Trump used Twitter to incite his followers to protest against the legitimate result of last November’s US presidential election – at which a riot then ensued – it seemed the worst sanction he was likely to receive was a lifetime ban from Twitter.

Many people were incensed…

… including members of his own party – like Arnold Schwarzenegger. This speech may very well be the best performance of his life. Perhaps it’s because it came from the heart:

It seems these voices have been heard.

On Monday (January 11), formal impeachment proceedings were launched against Trump by Congress – the United States Parliament.

This is an ongoing story.

Let’s hope it has a happy ending for us all.

Here’s a January pick-me-up from the people who make funny videos about politics

Take off: Donald Trump is on his way out of the White House – and some of us can’t wait to see him go.

If you’re sick of the “relentless stream of misery on social media”, as one commenter on the Vox Political Facebook page put it, you need to cheer up!

Fortunately, there is an army of creative people who are working hard to lift our spirits with amusing images, cartoons and video clips.

For example: here’s one anticipating the departure of Donald Trump from the US Presidency – with a clever adaptation of a song from perennial movie favourite The Sound of Music.

I’ll try to find more. Meanwhile, feel free to follow Shirley Serban on Facebook and YouTube.

Johnson’s media buddies try to deny similarities between him and Trump

Donald Trump and Boris Johnson: one hides in a bunker, the other once hid in a fridge. Check out the body language. And those are just tips of the iceberg [Composite: Laura Tisdale/Twitter].

We said they would do this:

The Times was just the first to actually get there.

It shouldn’t be a surprise. As James Foster states, the author of the piece, one James Forsyth, is the husband of Allegra Stratton, Johnson’s press secretary.

Do you think it’s a coincidence that he’s the one writing the first propaganda piece asserting that Boris Johnson isn’t politically aligned with Donald Trump, after Trump whipped up his far-right followers in the United States to riot against his presidential election defeat?

I don’t.

Nor do many other people, by all appearances:

And people are queuing up to remind us all of the similarities:

Feel free to bookmark this article, should you need to be reminded of Johnson’s character at some time in the future.

Four dead after Trump provokes US Capitol riot – and the UK Tories are taking notes

Buddies: Boris Johnson and Donald Trump. Johnson has refused to condemn Trump’s involvement in the US Capitol riot; indeed, he was probably too busy taking notes.

It has been claimed that what happens in the United States is brought to the UK several years later.

With that in mind, watch this clip of Priti Patel refusing to condemn Donald Trump for provoking a riot in Washington DC yesterday:

UK prime minister Boris Johnson also condemned the riots but stopped short of criticising Trump:

The reason? They’re taking notes.

Trump has spent the last two months protesting against the result of last November’s presidential election, which he lost decisively to Democrat Joe Biden.

He triggered a scandal earlier in the week when it was revealed that he had engaged Georgia’s (Republican) Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in an hour-long telephone conversation in which he appealed for his colleague to “find” 11,780 votes – one more than the 11,779 majority that Biden achieved in that state.

This is electoral fraud and Raffensperger wouldn’t have it.

Trump went on to spout a series of conspiracy theories that (it has been claimed) far-right internet sites have been promoting – including that his opponents tampered with voting machines in the state. His claims were greeted with a blunt “no” from the leading lawyer on Raffensperger’s team.

The revelation was greeted as a scandal bigger than Watergate. The only reason Trump wasn’t facing impeachment after the recording of his call was published by the Washington Post is that unlike Richard Nixon, his own party leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives are not willing to condemn him.

Then came the riot.

Congress was due to meet yesterday (January 6) for a purely ceremonial event to confirm Biden’s election victory – but Trump wasn’t having it.

He tweeted a call for his supporters to attend and protest, appealing for them to “stop the steal”.

Events escalated out of control into a riot in which members of the US public stormed the Capitol, and now four people are dead.

One, unofficially named as San Diego-area US Air Force veteran and Trump supporter Ashli Babbit, was part of a group that forced entry into the House room while it was still in session. They were confronted by plain-clothes police officers, one of whom pulled out a weapon and fired it. She was rushed to hospital where she was later proclaimed dead.

Another woman and two men died as a result of “medical emergencies”, officials said, without giving details. At least 14 members of the police were also injured.

Trump has not apologised for instigating the riot or for the deaths to which it led. He is still denying the legitimacy of the election result but has agreed to an “orderly transition” of the presidency to Biden.

Add it all up and it amounts to a shocking degeneration and indictment against Trump in the last days of his presidency.

And the silence from the UK’s government is equally appalling.

But then, we should remember that Boris Johnson’s Conservative government has been a wholehearted Trump supporter – with Johnson himself even suggesting the soon-to-be ex-president should receive the Nobel Peace Prize:

But let’s not restrict this to Johnson (and Patel, above). Plenty of other UK political figures have supported Trump:

That is why I feel the need to amplify these comments:

Think about it – because you can be sure Johnson and his planners are.

They’ll be looking at what happened and how it happened, and working out how they can create the same situation in the UK and spin it to make them look good.

Then they will have a little ace-in-the-hole if their policies look like creating civil unrest in the future.

#USAElection2020 – it’s Biden! so Boris Johnson is in trouble

Joe Biden has beaten Donald Trump in the US presidential election – meaning trouble for UK prime minister Boris Johnson.

Biden topped the 270 electoral college votes needed to take the presidency when Pennsylvania declared for him on Saturday afternoon (UK time – November 7).

This means – hopefully – we will all be treated to the sight of Donald Trump being dragged from the White House by secret service men, kicking and screaming. That’s what he promised!

Trump may well follow through on his threat to bog the process down with litigation. We’ll see.

Assuming such shenanigans are dismissed, Biden’s accession to the Presidency creates serious problems for Boris Johnson.

Once described by Biden as a “kind of a physical and emotional clone” of Trump, he has long been considered hostile to Johnson’s right-wing, populist politics.

Part of this can be traced back to Johnson’s dismissal of Barack Obama. His claim that Obama’s “part-Kenyan” heritage gave him an “ancestral dislike of the British Empire” may be considered racist.

Biden’s team has, we’re told, kept a close eye on the Johnson government, taking offence at the way it has cosied up to Trump.

Dominic Cummings has been likened by some on Biden’s team to Stephen Miller, the Trump policy adviser who contributed to a controversial 2017 travel ban and policy of separating migrant children from their parents.

More tangibly, Biden warned Johnson away from his threat to break international law on Brexit and – potentially – undermine the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland.

Biden’s own heritage is Irish. It seems, when it comes to ancestry, Boris Johnson’s judgement is poor indeed.

So when it comes to trade deals, Johnson may find himself losing any ground he gained by cultivating close links with Trump.

That doesn’t mean we’ll all be saved from eating chlorinated chicken after all.

In fact, it’s more likely to mean Johnson will toss more of our national property in, to sweeten the deal.

Whatever happens, it seems Boris Johnson is heading for even more trouble – and, as usual, it’s all of his own making.

#DonaldTrump accused of launching US version of #HitlerYouth

It seems the UK’s Johnson government isn’t the only political organisation copying whole chapters from the Nazi playbook.

US President Donald Trump has announced a plan to set up what critics have already dubbed his own version of the Hitler Youth – the scheme that was used to indoctrinate millions of German youngsters into Nazism in the 1930s and 40s.

The plan was announced in a Constitution Day speech at the White House Conference on American History at the National Archives Museum. Here’s CNN:

“We must clear away the web of twisted lies in our schools and classrooms and teach our children the magnificent truth about our country. We want our sons and daughters to know that they are the citizens of the most exceptional nation in the history of the world,” Trump said.

The President also called The New York Times’ 1619 Project, a Pulitzer Prize-winning project aimed at teaching American students about slavery, “toxic propaganda.”

In an apparent countering of the project’s narrative, Trump announced that he would be establishing a “national commission to promote patriotic education” called the 1776 Commission.

Apparently he said he wanted to counter “the liberal indoctrination” – mark that word – “of America’s youth”. But isn’t “indoctrination” exactly what he’s planning to do to them?

That’s another classic ploy of the Johnson government – doing something questionable but accusing somebody else of the crime.

It didn’t work – as these tweets demonstrate:

It seems Trump wants to create a new generation of stormtroopers for his far-right ideology.

Hitler’s version of that was nicknamed the Brown Shirts.

Perhaps we could call anyone who signs up to this the “Brown Shorts”?

In all seriousness, though, this is a terrifying development.

It shows that the most powerful nation on the planet is on the brink of totalitarianism. Will its citizens choose sanity in the election this November?

Nazanin to go back before Iranian court to face new charges – linked to Johnson’s blunder

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe: this wrongly-jailed woman has become a pawn in an international power struggle.

Just when it seemed Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s Iranian prison ordeal was coming to an end, she’s being dragged back into court.

And that country’s officials have taken great pleasure in letting us know that her plight is due to blundering Boris Johnson, the UK’s prime muppet.

Johnson was the idiot who blurted out in Parliament – in 2017, when he was Foreign Secretary – that Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been “training journalists”.

She had been doing nothing of the kind.

A project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, she had been doing nothing more sinister than visiting her family for the Persian New Year celebration when she was arrested in 2016.

But the Iranian authorities seized on Johnson’s idiotic remark and threatened to use it to add five more years to her five-year prison sentence.

Now – three years after Johnson misspoke, it seems they have decided to follow through on the threat:

Richard Ratcliffe said his wife will appear in court on Sunday accused of “spreading propaganda against the regime” in Iran.

Apparently that’s how they describe the teaching of journalism – which she wasn’t doing in any event.

Of course we all know that Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s imprisonment has more to do with the ÂŁ400 million that the UK government owes to Iran.

It could not be paid before because of international sanctions – but when Boris Johnson’s career was in danger, it seems such concerns evaporated.

How contrary, then, for us to find that the money has not been paid, apparently because Johnson doesn’t want to upset Donald Trump.

Johnson, it seems, wanted to wait until after the US presidential election on November 3 because he wanted to know whether Trump would still be US president before taking action.

So the Iranian decision to go back to court now has put him in a particularly sticky situation.

Will he pay up and get Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe back?

Or will he delay, to stay on the right side of Donald Trump?

I think we all know the answer to that. Johnson is the runt of international politics.

When powerful people squabble, it is always the innocents who suffer.
