Well, while you were being distracted by the war against which these brave people were protesting, your own government has been busy outlawing the kind of protest they were carrying out.
This is important because we are being told that Russia is a repressive, authoritarian dictatorship. And it is true that protesters can expect to face lengthy prison sentences if they are arrested.
But just compare the jail terms they’ll get with what you’ll face if you protest against your own government after the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill is passed into law:
Peaceful protestors in Russia can typically expect prison sentences of three-four years. Tonight this government will pass a bill that will could see peaceful protestors in Britain spend ten years behind bars.

Warmonger Liz: the foreign secretary has been rattling the sabre too loudly at Vladimir Putin when any conflict between the UK and Russia would be like sending this toy tank out to shoot down a nuclear missile.
I’m not saying Vladimir Putin reads Vox Political.
It is far more likely that Yr Obdt Srvt, looking at the available evidence, came to the correct conclusion about what was going on.
In an article yesterday, I stated that Putin’s decision to go to nuclear alert, said at the time to be because of “aggressive statements” by the West, was a serious demand for western nations to tone down their rhetoric, and the West has taken that seriously.
We should be hopeful, I continued, because it would stop Liz Truss from putting her foot in her mouth every time she opens it.
The Queen of Cheese’s latest boneheadedness has been to support calls for UK citizens to go to Ukraine – a move which, if it happened, would almost certainly be seen by Putin as the UK sending troops to that country (despite an official statement from her colleague, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, that this will not take place).
Unable to stop the flow of gibberish from her mouth, Truss claimed that anybody going to Ukraine would be fighting “for democracy”.
It’s exactly the kind of inflammatory talk that is likely to push Putin over the edge and endanger us all.
Here’s the confirmation that I was right:
So there you have it – direct from the Russian president’s mouth.
If UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had any sense, he would sack Truss – simply as a gesture to show that the UK does not want to provoke nuclear war.

You may remember that Keir Starmer ordered members of the Labour Party’s Socialist Campaign Group of MPs to withdraw their names from a Stop the War Coalition statement on the Russia-Ukraine crisis that criticised Nato – in the late afternoon of February 24.
It seems that, while the decision to threaten them with the loss of the Labour whip was his, the idea came from former Conservative MP David Gauke – as former Labour MP Chris Williamson has highlighted:

Check the time on it: 3.51pm. Around an hour and a half later, right-wing columnist Dan Hodges tweeted to say that the Labour whips had done exactly as Gauke had suggested:
Understand the Labour chief whip has written to those Labour MPs who signed the Stop The War letter on the Ukraine, instructing them to withdraw their names.
Confirmation came from LabourList an hour after that:

So it seems Mr Williamson is right and Labour leader Keir Starmer takes orders from Tories. This could devastate Labour’s credibility with voters.
Gauke has tried to distance himself from the revelation – and insulted Mr Williamson in the process by saying Labour was becoming respectable again. The response is scathing:

However, I'm not sure an endorsement by a prominent Conservative will persuade many erstwhile and current Labour supporters about @UKLabour's "respectability".
We are days away from a by-election in Erdington, Birmingham, where Labour has struggled to attract campaigners while the left-wing candidate, Dave Nellist, has enjoyed huge support on the streets.
How will this damning revelation affect public opinion and – more importantly – the vote?

Liz Truss: even though it is unlikely to be serious, we can hope that Putin’s nuclear threat acts as a deterrent that stops her from making stupid, ineffectual threats against a country that could squash the UK like a bug.
The UK’s right-wing media may be doomsaying at an industrial level but the Russia-Ukraine crisis is not as horrifying as they’re saying.
For starters – as This Site and others suggested would happen – Ukraine and Russia are to hold negotiations for peace, at an undisclosed location on the border with Belarus.
Russia’s Vladimir Putin had suggested talks take place in Minsk but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was reluctant to go to a country that had acted as a staging post for the Russian invasion of his country.
It’s a reason to be hopeful, although Mr Zelenskyy said he was not convinced the meeting would have a positive outcome. However:
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he needed to use every opportunity to secure peace.
Bet then – just when some of us were starting to think we could see an end to the crisis – Putin announced that he is putting his country’s nuclear forces on “special alert”.
He said it was because of “aggressive statements” by the West.
It has been widely interpreted as a threat to launch nuclear missiles against western countries. So – an escalation of tensions and we should all be terrified, right?
Well, no.
Mature analysts are saying Putin may now believe he has miscalculated the amount of resistance his forces were likely to meet in Ukraine, along with the response from western nations that have proved more united than he expected.
So he has reached for new ideas – including the nuclear option. The trouble is, nuclear warfare is pointless for him – insane, in fact – because the west would respond by sending its own nuclear arsenal to turn Russia into a radioactive cinder. Mutually Assured Destruction – there’s a reason the acronym is “MAD”.
So – again – it’s unlikely Putin actually means he’s prepared to use nuclear weapons.
That’s a good thing too, isn’t it?
But – there’s always a “but” – it is a serious demand for western nations to tone down their rhetoric, and the West has taken that seriously.
And this brings me to the last of my reasons to be hopeful: It stops Liz Truss from putting her foot in her mouth every time she opens it.

Following on from an article This Site has literally just published, pointing out that calls to censor Russia Today as a state-sponsored propaganda unit make no sense when the BBC is unhindered, here’s Skwawkbox:
The BBC has been caught presenting video of a military parade fly-by as footage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Full Fact confirmed that the video broadcast on the Breakfast programme yesterday as showing the invasion was in fact 2020 footage of a fly-past as part of a parade in May 2020.
The BBC claimed the footage was ‘used once briefly in error’ and that it had spoken to staff about the importance of checking what they are showing.
It’s very difficult to use old footage “in error” as it has to be specially ordered from the BBC archive.
Skwawkbox points out that the BBC was caught using this dodge before – swapping old footage of Boris Johnson laying a Remembrance Day wreath for current images in which he insulted veterans by laying it upside-down in 2019. The BBC did apologise for this – although it did not admit doing it to cover up the insult.
In a similar vein, the BBC has been running articles on false images purporting to be of the Russia-Ukraine conflict while in fact being archive footage or images from video games – here’s one – but there has been no article acknowledging its own use of such material (at the time of writing).

Russia today is backed by the Russian government – but isn’t the BBC a state-run broadcaster, here in the UK?
The government here has a huge influence over the BBC – particularly the Tories who have put their people on the BBC board and into its newsrooms, yet still hypocritically claim it misreports them.
The recent decision to end the licence fee – the BBC’s principle form of income – is a prime example of UK government interference that we can all see.
So Keir Starmer’s accusation against Russia Today rings hollow. It may well be a state-backed broadcaster, but isn’t it acting exactly as the BBC has done – but from an opposing viewpoint?
Isn’t it useful to know how other countries are reporting the international issues?
And isn’t free speech still a right in the UK?

Keir Starmer: Putin down his people (sorry – I couldn’t resist the pun).
People across Russia who have stood up in protest against their country’s invasion of Ukraine are winning praise from politicians in the UK and across the world.
What a stark contrast with the reaction of – for example – UK Labour leader Keir Starmer, who has forced 11 of his MPs to withdraw their protest against the war under threat of losing the party whip!
Here is video evidence of some of the protests in Russia, as citizens there exercised their right to free speech:

All of these protests if they took place in the UK, would soon be illegal under the Tory government’s Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts legislation that is currently working its way through Parliament.
And it seems Labour’s current leadership tacitly supports such suppression; here’s how Starmer reacted to his MPs’ exercise of their right to free speech:

“This dispute could and should be resolved peacefully, and that remains the only basis for a lasting settlement, rather than the imposition of military solutions. That it has not been resolved is not, however, the responsibility of the Russian or Ukrainian governments alone.
“The conflict is the product of thirty years of failed policies, including the expansion of NATO and US hegemony at the expense of other countries as well as major wars of aggression by the USA, Britain and other NATO powers which have undermined international law and the United Nations.
“The British government has played a provocative role in the present crisis, talking up war, decrying diplomacy as appeasement and escalating arms supplies and military deployments to Eastern Europe.
“If there is to be a return to diplomacy, as there should be, the British government should pledge to oppose any further eastward expansion of NATO and should encourage a return to the Minsk-2 agreement, already signed by both sides, by all parties as a basis for ending the crisis in relations between Ukraine and Russia.
“Beyond that, there now needs to be a unified effort to develop pan-European security arrangements which meet the needs of all states, something that should have been done when the Warsaw Pact was wound up at the end of the Cold War. The alternative is endless great power conflict with all the attendant waste of resources and danger of bloodshed and destruction.
“We send our solidarity to all those campaigning for an end to the war, often under very difficult conditions, in Russia and Ukraine. Stop the War can best support them by demanding a change in Britain’s own policy, which can be seen to have failed.”
Stop the War expanded on this in a message to followers:
“The Russian invasion of Ukraine overnight is a massive escalation in the conflict there. Stop the War is calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops and for an immediate ceasefire. Our statement is here and our resolution for union branches/CLPs here.
“The danger of war involving nuclear weapons is more real than previously and must be opposed. The real losers will be the ordinary people of Ukraine, Russia, and the rest of Europe.
“We should, however, take no lessons in peacemaking from our own government and its allies. They have brought us decades of escalating wars, each of which has been a failure. They have encouraged a growing arms race internationally. And they have set on a path of Nato expansion which has brought the military alliance to the borders of Russia, in contravention of agreements made at the end of the Cold War.
“Nato is not a defensive alliance but an aggressive one, centrally involved in wars in Afghanistan, Libya and Yugoslavia, and engaged in more and more ‘out of area operations’ including in the Indo-Pacific.
“Our government wants to hide its domestic problems behind its belligerent statements, and we can be certain that this will continue, at the same time that it will provide unlimited money for war but increase student loan repayments and cut the NHS.
“There is a surge or argument in favour of greater sanctions, including from those who purport to be anti war. But sanctions are not an alternative to war – they are economic warfare and therefore a prelude to war. We have seen this in Iraq where all they did was bring war closer, at the same time as bringing real suffering to the people of Iraq.
“As an anti-war and peace movement, our first priority is to stop war. This conflict has not developed in the last few weeks alone, but reflects a society where war is being turned to increasingly to solve other problems. However, we are also aware that this is a different situation from previous wars where our government has been directly involved in military action, and we need to do as much as we can to explain and discuss the issues with those around us.
“We are asking our members, supporters, groups and affiliates to do the following:
Make sure our statement and resolution are disseminated as widely as possible.
Do everything to publicise and support our international meeting on Saturday 26th February and our in person rally on Wednesday 2nd March in Conway Hall, London.
Hold urgent meetings in all localities – in person where possible – calling for withdrawal of Russian troops, ceasefire now and against Nato expansion.
Attend the demos and actions in support of the NHS with placards linking cuts in public spending with money for war- you can download and print our new placard design from our website.
Prepare for a day of action (tba) where we hold protests and vigils against the war.

This Writer leans toward the belief that Starmer – who only recently and loudly announced his support for Nato as Labour’s current policy (not that it ever changed from that) – has been incensed by the support of opposition to the organisation by Labour backbenchers.
So he did what bullies do – he threatened them with reprisals.
Even facing World War III, Keir Starmer decides to split the Labour party again by trying to purge 11 of his own MPs.
And he drew comparisons between himself and Russian president Vladimir Putin in an ironic but entirely appropriate unintended consequence:
Starmer demanding 11 left MP's withdraw their signatures from a Stop The War motion criticising NATO (justified & doesn't make you pro Putin) or risk losing the whip is literally something Putin would do. When he does it anyway, his war on the left will be publicly exposed.
Damo expands on this in a well-argued ‘rant’ that critics of the Stop the War 11 should consider with care:

And how will this play out in the United Kingdom at large?
Well, with a by-election set to take place in Erdington, Birmingham on March 3, we shouldn’t have long to wait. And people are already making their wishes clear:

Buddies: Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping of China. Putin seems keen to go back to the negotiating table after a chat in which Xi reminded him of China’s preference to leave other countries’ borders inviolate and their internal affairs to their governments.
Having almost conquered Ukraine within two days, Russian president Vladimir Putin has found another way to make Nato and the western powers including the UK and USA look stupid: negotiations.
According to Reuters,
Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to send a delegation to Minsk for negotiations with representatives of Ukraine, the Kremlin said on Friday after the Russian leader held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The shift in mood could throw a lifeline to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has always said he knows his country can’t withstand an attack by Russia on its own.
He has had to watch Russian troops move into his capital city of Kiev, despite the heroic efforts of his outnumbered and outgunned military – and armed civilians. This could prevent further violence.
And it’s a good move for Putin because it makes the western jingoists look daft again. They’ve been saying he wants to create a new Soviet Union, starting with an occupation of Ukraine, and a trip to the negotiating table – most likely to secure Ukrainian neutrality so it won’t join Nato – will well and truly end that story.
This Writer is willing to bet he’ll take the disputed eastern territories into Russia as part of the negotiations; he’s in a position of power and will use it. He’ll say it’s what the people there want.
If Zelenskyy agrees to talks, and if we’re all very lucky, the violence could be all over by Monday.*
*All right, that’s highly optimistic. But a phrase reminiscent of “It’ll all be over by Christmas” reminds us all of what we’re risking, doesn’t it?

Jacob Rees-Mogg: He doesn’t have a moustache to twirl villainously, so he had to adjust his glasses instead.
Isn’t this interesting? (And by “interesting” I mean deeply questionable and disturbing.)
Jacob Rees-Mogg is a partner in a company – Somerset Capital Management – that was criticised for investing £60 million in Russia’s biggest bank, Sberbank, after he called on then-UK prime minister Theresa May to impose tougher economic sanctions against Russia in the wake of the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal, back in 2018.
Sberbank had been under European Union sanctions since the Russian invasion of the Crimea in 2014.
But the investment seemed a good one at the time. In March 2018 its London-listed shares were understood to be worth four times what they had been worth in May 2015.
But then, 23 days ago – as the Russia-Ukraine crisis started to gain heat – Rees-Mogg’s firm sold its last shares in the bank, netting £44.5 million:
Rees-Mogg himself is not involved in SCM investment decisions – but he does receive money that the company earns from its investments.
And he has been criticised for maintaining shares in the bank while being involved in UK government policy decisions about Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin.
The fact that he was involved in these debates makes the company’s decision to divest itself of these shares… questionable, if not downright suspicious.
The value of the bank’s shares, we’re told, has halved since SCM sold what it had.
It might all have been above-board. Rees-Mogg may have had nothing to do with the decision to sell.
But we will never know. And that’s what makes this suspicious.
There is a clear conflict of interest that has gone undeclared, unremarked, and ignored.
As part of the most corrupt UK government in living memory – if not in history – we all think he’s entirely capable of passing on information from policy meetings for the purpose of his own enrichment.
And that undermines trust in the UK government and its decisions – as a whole. We cannot safely assume that our leaders’ choices are made solely in the national interest because we have reason to believe that they are acting for themselves.

Marcus Rashford: Natalie Elphicke said he should have stayed out of politics after he missed a penalty in the Euro 2020 final last year. Now Elphicke’s fellow Tory Liz Truss wants footballers to be involved in politics after all. These Tory hypocrites just want the rest of us to do whatever suits THEM best, at any particular moment.
Confused?
It’s a little more than seven months since Tory MP Natalie Elphicke said footballer Marcus Rashford should concentrate on his “day job” rather than become involved in politics.
She was attacking Rashford after his campaigning ensured that the poorest schoolchildren could avoid malnutrition by forcing the government to continue providing free school meals to them during school holidays at the height of the Covid-19 crisis.
After he missed a vital penalty in the Euro 2020 final, she said he should have focused on his football rather than “playing politics”.
Elphicke later apologised – after her comment became a matter of public knowledge.
It later transpired that Elphicke herself wasn’t entirely focused on her own “day job”, after it was revealed that she earned almost £100 per hour as chair of the New Homes Quality Board.
How opinions change when it’s expedient for them to do so!
Here’s Elphicke’s fellow Tory – Foreign Secretary Liz Truss – urging English footballers to become political and boycott the Champions League Final in St Petersburg, Russia, if their team manages to win a place in that match:
Her comments were motivated by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, of course.
But they expose yet another vein of hypocrisy in the words of UK politicians: they want footballers out of politics when it disadvantages them, but then they want footballers to make political decisions when it suits their own purposes.
People like Liz Truss want to have their cake and eat it – all the time.
As it happens, This Writer would have supported a boycott of the Champions League final, if it was to take place in St Petersburg. But UEFA has stripped Russia of that privilege and the even will take place in Paris.
My own stance is not hypocritical, of course: I have always supported Marcus Rashford’s intervention in politics.
If more of us took active control of our political lives, we might have fewer hypocrites like Truss and Elphicke running our country into the ground.
