In London’s mayoral race, UKIP pins its hopes on Gammons

Once again, the UK Independence Party has made itself the butt of the joke.

You’ll be familiar with the expression “gammon”, meaning “a middle-aged or older white man with conservative, traditionalist views, stereotypically characterized as having a red or flushed complexion”. It has been linked with supporters of UKIP for many years.

Today (January 15) we all discovered the name of the party’s candidate in the London mayoral election… and the fun began:

We all had a few giggles about the coincidence:

But the real punchline is the fact that this is not the first time UKIP has been ham-strung (sorry) by an unfortunately-resonating name:

This Writer, for one, is grateful to Mr Gammons.

He has brightened up an otherwise miserable day.

Ex-Tory councillor thought he had the right to put metal shards in BABY FOOD. What is wrong with these people?

Is there something inherently psychotic about Tories, that they think they have a God-given right to cause harm to others?

Already today (at the time of writing), This Site has published an article about a Tory who had more than 1,500 child sex images, including torture and bestiality. He walked free because he was not considered a danger to children, even though the judge stated clearly, in court, that people who consume these images cause other people to make them.

Nigel Wright is a danger to children. He contaminated Tesco baby food with metal shards during an attempt to blackmail the supermarket giant, claiming that he represented dairy farmers who had been underpaid by the firm.

He tried to get Tesco to pay him £1.4 million in return for information about where he had hidden the jars.

Wright is a former Conservative councillor who then shifted to UKIP, for whom he was a Parliamentary candidate.

Look at the details:

The court heard two mothers found the metal fragments when they were feeding their children after Wright began his two-year campaign in the spring of 2018.

He threatened to inject tins of fruit with cyanide and salmonella unless the supermarket giant handed over the cash in Bitcoin.

He triggered two nationwide recalls on Cow & Gate and Heinz baby food as a result of the threats, prompting the supermarket to clear 140,000 products from the shelves.

A detective posed as a Tesco employee named Sam Scott and handed over £100,000 in the crypto-currency to trap the blackmailer.

Wright was caught on CCTV buying wine and flowers for his wife after placing a contaminated jar on the shelves of a Tesco branch in Lockerbie in Scotland on November 29 last year.

It was said that he took ‘delight’ in what he was doing, believing he could get rich anonymously by using bitcoin and downloading the Tor browser that allows anonymous communication.

This is really sick stuff, and it demonstrates that at least some people who identify as Conservatives have serious psychological problems.

It is not acceptable for Wright to endanger other people’s children for the sake of a bit of cash – just is it was not acceptable for Mark Lerigo to cause children to be harmed for the sake of his personal gratification.

But these Tories blithely carry on, in the unshakeable belief that they are above the law.

After all, their colleagues in Boris Johnson’s government are.

Their attitude seems to be, why shouldn’t they be above the law, too?

These young ladies of Brexit need to be seen to be believed

I promise this is not a send-up and these people are for real.

Watch the video embedded in Kerry-Anne Mendoza’s tweet. You won’t need to go very far into it to get the gist:

Alice and Beatrice Grant (for those are their names) have been getting roasted online ever since this went out.

They are genuine Farage fangirls who, let’s be honest, don’t seem to understand much of what they’re on about.

This Mail article gives a little more background:

“The two young women are in fact sisters Alice and Beatrice Grant, aged 17 and 15, privately educated granddaughters of the late industrialist and former Governor of the Bank of Scotland Sir Alistair Grant.”

Oh right, so a background like that should give them a qualification in … Capitalism, not Socialism. I’d have thought so, anyway.

“The girls argue that what Britain needs is a swift No-Deal exit from the EU. In their eyes, Nigel Farage is a hero for standing up for Britain and fighting for British independence from the ‘corrupt EU’. And while they are still too young to vote, they have little time for those who doubt they are the genuine article.”

The piece goes on to say the girls like to spend their spare time looking for vintage clothes in charity shops. Personally, I see them more as looking in shops like “I Saw You Coming” from Harry and Paul. On the subject of Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse, here’s one Twitter user’s response to Alice and Beatrice:

Here’s a comment on their style of autocue-reading (if it was even that sophisticated).

Obviously, as Brexiteers, they’re fans of UKIP’s new leader, Dick Braine, too:

https://twitter.com/Kit_Zongo/status/1161569658543194112

It would be beneath This Writer to suggest that the only reason these girls have been put forward as faces of Brexit is the fact that they’re easy on the eye.

But we can all agree – can’t we? – that it wasn’t for their intelligence.

Latest leaflets show LABOUR as the best choice in B&R by-election

What a pleasure to have something good to say about one of the by-election leaflets pouring through my letterbox!

It comes from Labour candidate Tom Davies; it’s down-to-Earth, makes no promises it can’t keep, and it addresses issues that are affecting us all – now.

He rejects ‘no deal’ Brexit and backs a final say referendum, in which he will be campaigning in support of remaining in the EU.

He supports Welsh Labour’s commitment to achieve a carbon-neutral public sector by 2030, and a shift away from fossil fuels across Wales – to combat the climate crisis.

He supports the Labour Assembly Government’s policies to provide 100,000 all-age apprenticeships, 20,000 more affordable homes and the best childcare for working parents in the whole of the UK.

And he says a Labour government in Westminster would end austerity, invest in public services, introduce a Real Living Wage (in other words it would be enough to ensure no working person would have to claim benefits), and a cap on energy prices. He doesn’t say he would bring this in immediately, because we don’t have a Labour government now – but adding him to Labour’s ranks would make it more likely in the future.

Compare this with the leaflet from UKIP’s Liz Phillips. If elected, she would be that party’s sole MP in Westminster, yet she claims she would:

  • End the TV licence
  • Control immigration
  • Make Brexit happen
  • Save the countryside and
  • Scrap the Welsh Assembly

That’s quite a tall order for 1/650th of the MPs in Parliament. How’s she going to get everyone else to go along with that wish-list?

Oh, and she’d oppose windfarms, too. Apparently she doesn’t feel quite as sure she’ll get support on that one.

Most risible of all is the letter from Nigel Farage of the Brexit Party.

If his candidate – Des Parkinson – is elected, he would be the Brexit Party’s sole MP in Westminster – so he’s in the same position as Ms Phillips.

The letter states that if elected, this solitary MP would “refuse to pay the £39 billion ransom” – Mr Farage’s word. My understanding is that this is money the UK committed to pay into the EU before the 2016 referendum – “… scrap the multi-billion pound HS2 vanity project. And… cut the bloated, wasteful Foreign Aid budget”. How, exactly, does he intend to get at least 326 other MPs on board for that? This letter doesn’t say.

“Then we’ll take £200 billion and invest it in transport and digital infrastructure projects around Britain… That’s more than twice as much as they spent rebuilding post-war Europe.” And once inflation is taken into account, how much is it then? And there’s still no information on how Mr Parkinson intends to sway all of Parliament to his massive Brexiteering will.

“It will be areas such as Wales that will reap the benefits.” This is the bribe. Mr Farage wants you to think his party would get money spent here – and directly after the election on Thursday. Impossible.

The rest of the letter is an attack – not on the so-called “bookies’ favourite”, Jane Dodds of the Liberal Democrats, or even on former incumbent Chris Davies of the Conservatives – but on the Labour Party which is currently considered to be behind in public opinion (despite the clear worthiness of Tom Davies’ position and policies).

How bizarre. Does Mr Farage think stealing Labour’s votes will leap-frog his candidate beyond Mr Davies or Ms Dodds?

Well… it’s possible, I suppose.

Liberal Democrat Jane Dodds has built her campaign on stealing votes from other parties. Her local policy platform is non-existent – she might as well have come out and said, “I won’t do a single damned thing for the people of Brecon and Radnorshire.” But she thinks she can win tactical votes from Labour supporters by claiming to be the only candidate who can beat Chris Davies, and from Remain supporters by claiming to represent the only party that supports staying in the European Union.

Mr Davies has been relatively quiet – unless his leafletters have simply been avoiding Vox Political Towers. His attitude is that he belongs to the party that is currently in government, so if you want Brexit, you should vote for him, despite the fact that he has been convicted of falsifying his Parliamentary expenses. He seems to be relying on the rump of 7,000+ voters who’ll put their tick in the Tory box, no matter what.

Mr Parkinson may take some of the right-wing vote from Mr Davies, and is certainly likely to take pro-Brexit voters away from the Tory. He may also take pro-Brexit voters away from Ms Dodds. But Ms Phillips is likely to do the same – and who knows what harm UKIP and the Brexit Party will do each other?

And then there’s Tom Davies. He has made it clear that he supports remaining in the EU, and is in a party that has far more chance of ensuring that happens – if another vote takes place – than the Liberal Democrats will ever have. A remain-supporting vote for Jane Dodds is a useless protest, nothing more. But will his offer lure Remain supporters away from her? Or has she fooled too many Labour supporters into wasting their vote on her? Remember: her canvassers have been telling voters that Labour doesn’t even have a candidate in this by-election – a flat-out lie.

So these are the choices for voters in Brecon and Radnorshire on Thursday (August 1):

Two candidates who’ll be able to do nothing if elected; a convict; a liar; and Labour.

I’ll be voting Labour – because democracy is about choosing the right representative, not about trying to work out who’s most likely to beat whoever you think is the bad guy.

Dismal Euro election result hides underlying causes for hope

Take heart, Britain! All is not as bad as the European election results make it seem!

Yes, Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party won 28 of the UK’s 73 seats, indicating an alarming shift to the political hard-right. But that doesn’t mean a hard-right election win. The Brexit Party didn’t even get a majority in the UK.

Also, the simple fact is that anti-EU parties led by Nigel Farage don’t actually do anything in the European Parliament, other than fart around making speeches that annoy the serious politicians. They certainly don’t take part in any democratic votes because it is a pillar of their beliefs that the EU cannot be a democratic organisation.

Just take a look at Mr Farage’s own voting record for the evidence. You’ll see the word “absent” a lot.

People who voted for the Brexit Party won’t make a difference in the EU because the Brexit Party won’t turn up.

In fact, the only reason the Brexit Party even campaigned was so Mr Farage could deliver an ultimatum on Brexit negotiations: He wants a place at the table so he can push for a “no deal” Brexit.

No deal means no NHS (he’d sell it to the Americans), no human or workers’ rights, chlorinated chicken for dinner and a massive increase in the cost of groceries and other goods. He would pauperise everybody who voted for him.

Best thing to do would be to give him the place he wants at the table – and then ignore him in the national interest.

Yes, the Liberal Democrats enjoyed a surge of support as UK citizens who want to remain in the European Union protest-voted for them.

How they expect to push their promise that a vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote for remaining in the EU, when the European Parliament won’t be voting on that subject, is a mystery.

But those votes won’t be wasted. They’ll be used to promote right-wing Liberal Democrat policies – the same kind of policies they supported when in Coalition with the Conservatives, here in the UK, between 2010 and 2015.

Socialist remainers who voted Liberal Democrat should monitor the result very carefully – and probably with dismay.

But there was also a surge of support – across the EU – for Green parties and policies that address the growing climate change and environmental crises caused by a human race whose policies have been controlled by people like the Brexit Party and the Liberal Democrats for far too long.

The UK’s Green Party now has seven MEPs – an increase of four – who will help boost the total number of Greens in the European Parliament to a projected 71. This could give the Greens the balance of power in the European Parliament.

Any parliamentary group that wanted Green support would have to deliver on three key principles: climate action, civil liberties and social justice.

The party will exert maximum pressure on climate policy, but will also push for more social justice when it comes to who winds up footing the bill for the green transition.

And Labour will learn the lesson of its losses. The party as a whole will continue to express dismay at the polarisation of politics around a Leave/Remain conflict but will say there is no political solution coming from Westminster or Brussels so the question must go back to the people – directly.

That means either a general election or another referendum – the “people’s vote” that so many MPs, of many parties, have been demanding.

Labour has always said it will abide by the results of plebiscites on our membership of the European Union, and while a “people’s vote” referendum has been framed as a way of establishing support for remaining in the Union, the European election result (although not representative of the entire electorate as only a little more than one-third of the UK electorate took part) suggests otherwise.

It would be a way of silencing this divisive debate, once and for all.

So in the end, Labour’s policy may prove to be the winner.

Another vile creature set to stand for UKIP – so why would anyone support it in the Euro-election polls?

Candidates: Carl Benjamin (left) and Mark Meechan (right) are both set to represent UKIP in the European Parliament elections. Two good reasons NOT to vote for that party!

Wow. UKIP’s leaders certainly know how to pick ’em.

Is it the influence of Stephen Yaxley Lennon (stage name: Tommy Robinson)? I don’t know.

After learning that Mark Meechan (stage name: Count Dankula) may be a UKIP candidate in the European Parliament election, we now discover that Carl Benjamin (stage name: Sargon of Akkad) is one of two candidates for the southwest region.

Maybe you don’t think you are familiar with this person’s work; you are probably mistaken.

Remember when Labour MP Jess Phillips revealed she had received many threats, including some of rape and murder? ‘Sargon of Akkad’ was the Twitter user who responded, “I wouldn’t even rape you.” He got thrown off of Twitter for that.

Habitually, his choice of language is appalling. The Sunday Times (I know, but you’ll understand why it seems reliable in this instance) reported that he had used what we now call the “N-word” in a livestream: “You are acting like a bunch of n******, just so you know. You act like white n******.” He used the word again, along with slurs including “Spic”, “Chink”, and “Retard”, in a video.

Oh, and apparently he thinks the age of consent should be negotiable: “Yeah, I think.. it depends on the child really, doesn’t it.. it should really be a case by case basis”.

Visit Zelo Street for the full details.

“We went through an exhaustive process to sift over 190 potential candidates down to those the national executive committee representatives and I felt were most suitable,” according to UKIP leader Gerard Batten.

“This list is based on a number of factors that we felt would select candidates to fight for a real Brexit after the European elections. Ukip’s priority is to have MEPs who will fight to make Brexit happen.”

As far as UKIP’s priorities are concerned, it’s a real eye-opener.

Perhaps it is a reason the party is plummeting in the opinion polls related to the European Parliament election:

Are people getting the message?

I guess we’ll find out at the end of May.

‘Nazi salute’ dog man ‘Count Dankula’ standing for Ukip in Euro election – so they’re BOTH sunk, then

One man and his (Nazi) dog: Mark Meechan, otherwise known as “Count Dankula”, with the dog he taught to Nazi salute when he shouted “Gas the Jews!”

Mark Meechan, the YouTube activist (?) going by the alias “Count Dankula” who was fined £800 for training a dog to do a Nazi salute when he shouted “Gas the Jews!” reckons he’ll be standing for UKIP in the forthcoming EU Parliament elections.

If this is true, I applaud it – it means that UKIP has drifted even further to the political right if it allows a known anti-Semite to become one of its election candidates.

I look forward to seeing both this man and that party sink without a trace.

“Dankula” was recently cut out of a BBC Scotland discussion programme called The Collective after the Corporation received complaints that it was inappropriate to feature a man convicted of an anti-Semitic hate crime.

But the excuse was that he was excised “during the edit process”.

“Dankula” is not only a convicted anti-Semite but also a friend of Stephen Yaxley Lennon, the far-right Islamophobe who is better-known by his stage name “Tommy Robinson”. Funny how they all have aliases, isn’t it?

He shot to infamy over the YouTube clip in which he had trained his girlfriend’s pug to do a Nazi salute while he repeatedly shouted, “Gas the Jews!”

And he dragged Countdown co-host Rachel Riley down with him when she responded to a tweet in which he complained about the possibility of having a GPS tracker attached to him, and being placed under house arrest, with the word “insane”.

The tweet prompted strong responses, although some expressed uncertainty about what Ms Riley meant.

(Further information is available here.)

She has not – to my knowledge – ever clarified the statement in a way that allayed anybody’s fears.

She wants to sue This Writer after I criticised her for ill-treating a teenage girl with anxiety issues who criticised her over her pose as a campaigner against anti-Semitism.

Considering some of the people she supports, it seems clear she hasn’t got a leg to stand on.

UKIP appoints jailbird who nearly ruined a rape trial as adviser on prison reform and rape gangs

Grinning idiots: UKIP leader Gerard Batten shakes all credibility away as he shakes hands with Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (Tommy Robinson) and gives him a position of responsibility in his inner circle.

No wonder Brexit is such a godawful mess when the political organisation that campaigned to achieve it for decades appoints a far-right extremist who was sent to prison after he nearly ruined the trial of a major rape gang as its special adviser on prison reform and rape gangs.

Not only has UKIP leader Gerard Batten allowed Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (also known as Tommy Robinson) into his party; he has also given him a job that can only be seen as an insult to the public.

And the reaction has been exactly what we should expect:

Winners and losers: UKIP collapse suggests the local elections were a referendum on #Brexit

Is there a huge elephant in this discussion, that everyone in the mainstream media [MSM] is ignoring so they can attack Labour?

Did nobody notice what just happened to the UK Independence Party?

UKIP has collapsed – losing a massive 123 of the 126 seats it was defending.

The MSM have been desperate to ignore the implications, being happy to say ‘Leave’-voting areas migrated back to the Conservatives and ‘Remain’ areas to Labour or the Liberal Democrats.

But that’s not the whole picture. It’s more accurate to say voters moved their support back where it was before Brexit became the political football it is now.

We could say it’s simply a verdict on UKIP itself – a belief that this was a single-issue political party whose time has gone, having achieved its goal.

But people don’t usually form political parties for short-term reasons; UKIP wanted, not only to trigger the decision to leave the EU, but also to have a say in the nature of that departure – and that isn’t happening.

Also, let’s not forget that the ‘Leave’ campaign has been rocked by scandal after scandal – over expenses, over the alleged use of Cambridge Analytica to influence voters covertly, over the pathetic handling of negotiations with the EU27.

So, can’t we be honest? People are sick and tired of Brexit!

They know they were hoodwinked; they hate the fact that they’re now being led into financial ruin and international obscurity.

And they have punished the organisation they consider to be most responsible.
