Another Tory law Keir Starmer won’t repeal: the Illegal Migration Bill

‘Stop the boats’ says Braverman: Keir Starmer is apparently joining in the chant.

Would you like to know why Suella Braverman’s Illegal Migration Bill is breezing through the House of Lords, despite strong objections from figures like the Archbishop of Canterbury?

The legislation cleared its first hurdle in the Lords after a Liberal Democrat bid to block it was rejected by 179 votes to 76, majority 103.

The reason is simple: Keir Starmer ordered Labour peers to abstain on the vote because it would only delay, not stop, the Bill’s enactment. Worse still – he reckons it doesn’t affect his own migration plans:

So this former Director of Public Prosecutions, who is aware of the UK’s international human rights responsibilities as a requirement of his former career as a then-Queen’s Counsel, doesn’t think it is worthwhile to stop a law that tramples over those rights for as long as possible.

And his excuse is that the Tories will use a power to push it through without amendment if any effort is made to stop it.

It’s a cop-out, isn’t it?

Wouldn’t we be closer to the truth if we assume he wants this law to be passed?

Braverman has appealed to the Lords – in print – to let her horrorshow of a Bill pass without a murmur because it is “the will of the people”, despite the fact that only a minority of the population has indicated even the slightest approval…

… and she has demonstrated her lack of confidence in her own Bill by refusing to attend a joint committee that is required to scrutinise itL

She’s running scared, and with good reason:

Even the Archibishop of Canterbury has made a rare intervention, berating the Tory government for bringing forward a Bill that has no sense of the “global nature of the challenge”, ignores that “migration must be engaged with at source as well as in the Channel”.

He said: “It is morally unacceptable and politically impractical.”

He pointed out that, after all their jabbering about dealing with “criminal gangs” who they say exploit the people trying to reach the UK to claim asylum, there is no measure in the Bill for actually stopping them.

And he said safe, legal routes for people to claim asylum must be put into place.

Those are all good points – especially the practical matters of handling criminal gangs and creating safe, legal routes to claim asylum.

But Keir Starmer doesn’t have anything to say about them. He wants the Tory law to be passed as it is. We need to ask why.

Even Conservatives are worried their party is sliding into extremism

Baroness Warsi: She’s been a voice in the Tory wilderness for years.

Former Tory bigwigs have noticed the party is slipping into fascism, it seems.

Former party co-chair Sayeeda Warsi has said the party’s rhetoric on asylum seekers is dangerous. One has to wonder whether she’s okay with the way her colleagues talk about peaceful protesters.

Here she is:

Baroness Sayeeda Warsi told the FT that some of the “generalisations” that Conservative politicians had made were creating a “really dangerous space”.

Her remarks come after immigration minister Robert Jenrick said in a speech last month that refugee numbers needed to be controlled because those seeking asylum had “completely different lifestyles and values” from people in the UK.

He was supported by home secretary Suella Braverman, who added that asylum seekers showed “heightened levels of criminality”, including prostitution and drug dealing.

Earlier comments by Braverman about immigration prompted former footballer Gary Lineker to write on Twitter that the ministers’ language was “not dissimilar to that used in Germany in the 1930s”.

Warsi said Lineker was right about her party’s rhetoric and warned that it risked sliding into the same rightwing extremism as the Republican party in the US.

“There are only a few steps from there where then we end up demonising whole groups of communities,” Warsi said. “

You know, Gary Lineker was right when he said this is rhetoric from 1930s Germany.”

So if you know anybody who’s voting Tory on May 4, ask them why they support fascism and remind them that we fought a world war against it.

Tories have been … misleading … with ‘Welsh Government handout for asylum-seekers’ claim

Rishi Sunak: he made himself look like an utter halfwit by answering a question about Welsh Government policy in Prime Minister’s Questions.

Senior Conservatives have been telling porkies to get electoral advantage over the Labour Party in Wales, it seems.

Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies and Secretary of State for Wales David TC Davies both endorsed a claim that the Welsh Government is planning to give asylum seekers £1,600 per month.

But it seems the claim is utter bunkum, based on a letter that was not what The Sun had claimed. But then, why would anybody believe The Sun? Here’s Nation.Cymru:

The letter – which has been obtained by Nation.Cymru – was not an attempt to create a new asylum seeker policy, but involved three Welsh ministers seeking clarification on a pilot that already exists in Wales regarding 18-year-old care leavers.

The Welsh Government launched the Basic Income for Care Leavers scheme in July 2022 which ensures eligible young people leaving the care system receive £1,600 a month for the first 24 months of leaving care.

The Basic Income for Care Leavers only focuses on the category of care leavers which does include some unaccompanied asylum seeking children who were looked after by a local authority up until the age of 18.

The inclusion of asylum seeker children who were raised in care was always a factor that had been budgeted for by the Welsh Government from the outset of the pilot.

Eligibility for the scheme has not changed since it was set out in a written statement by the Welsh Government in February 2022.

Although it has not yet confirmed how many young asylum seekers leave care on average every year, a Welsh Government source said the number is “a very small proportion of those taking part in the pilot”.

So there’s nothing dodgy about this scheme at all.

But Andrew RT Davies said it was “creating an even bigger pull factor to bring people across the Channel”.

Welsh Secretary David TC Davies said: “Incentivising illegal migrants to risk their lives by crossing the Channel in exchange for taxpayers’ cash is wrong, dangerous and hugely irresponsible. That is why I have denied the Welsh Labour Government their request.”

One of the letter’s signatories, Mick Antoniw, pointed out to him: “This is nothing to do with you. No request has been made to you. Your permission is not required for anything.”

The lunacy even reached as high as prime minister Rishi Sunak, who said the pilot could incentivise people smuggling.

Nation.Cymru has acquired a comment from the Welsh Government that makes Sunak look like a simpleton:

“It is disappointing that inaccurate and misleading claims are being used to trivialise these sensitive issues.”

Home Office admits it made up claim that refugees are ‘economic migrants’

Priti Patel: when she was Home Secretary, she said Channel refugees were economic migrants and tried to stop the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) from saving them.

The Home Office has admitted it doesn’t have a scrap of evidence to support a long-standing claim that 70 per cent of people crossing the English Channel are “economic migrants”.

Here’s The Guardian:

As home secretary in 2021, Priti Patel told parliament that “70% of individuals on small boats are single men who are effectively economic migrants”. In December last year, with the number of boat arrivals continuing to increase, her successor, Suella Braverman, backed the assertion, saying to MPs: “There is considerable evidence that people are coming here as economic migrants, illegally.”

However, when asked via a Freedom of Information request for evidence to support Patel’s claim, the Home Office admitted it had none. Its response – dated 20 March 2023, a year after the request was sent – states: “We have carried out a thorough search and we have established that the Home Office does not hold the information requested.” But the former home secretary’s statement appears not to have been corrected.

Human rights groups say such claims help create a false narrative that individuals arriving by boat are not genuine asylum seekers so are less deserving of sympathy.

The Home Office’s own data confirms that most of the people who reached the UK by small boat in 2022 – at least six in 10 – would be recognised as refugees. Despite this, the British government has closed or severely restricted most safe routes to the UK, leaving people with no choice but to risk the Channel crossing.

Now, why would Tory ministers fabricate a lie that refugees are economic migrants?

Human rights are universal but the Tory government wants to choose who gets them

Channel “migrants”: they have every right to come to the UK to make their claim, according to internationally-recognised convention and law. They don’t have to settle in the first “safe” country (whatever that means) as some Tory ministers would have you believe.

As the Tory government seems keen to keep pushing its propaganda – like the false claim that asylum-seekers should settle in the first “safe” country they reach – let’s have a reminder of the facts.

Barge to house asylum seekers looks like a prison and is treated like one. What is it?

Has the plan to house asylum-seekers on the 222-berth barge Bibby Stockholm come unstuck with its comparison to a floating prison?

Tory ministers may be claiming it hasn’t…

… but they would have been better-off checking their history books first.

Allow me to introduce you to HM Prison Weare:

Formerly known as the Bibby Resolution, HMP Weare was moored at – guess where? – Portland Port near Weymouth, where it held 400 prisoners between 2004 and 2005 when it closed due to costly running, being unnecessary and the cost of millions of pounds in order to refurbish it.

The prison was reopened a few months later for a short period. Not long after, the prison closed permanently and was sold off after conditions on board were criticised by the Chief Inspector for Prisoners, who complained that inmates had no exercise and no access to fresh air, also stating the ship was “unsuitable, expensive and in the wrong place”

So: poor conditions, costly and unnecessary.

May we expect to see the same conditions prevailing with HMP Weare’s sister ship, Bibby Stockholm?

Look who’s opposing this plan to house asylum-seekers on a barge

Richard Drax: his ancestors transported slaves to the Caribbean in cramped, unhygienic ships. Now he is opposing a similar (albeit somewhat more comfortable) scheme for asylum-seekers.

When a Conservative MP whose family were pioneers of the slave trade opposes a plan to house foreign asylum-seekers on a “completely inadequate” barge, his colleagues in government ought to take notice.

They won’t, of course.

Richard Drax’s ancestors ran sugar plantations based on slave labour, in Barbados and Jamaica, until the British Parliament banned slavery in 1833. The slaves had been transported from Africa on ships where conditions were appallingly cramped, unhygienic and inhumane.

Now, single men who have already suffered to get to the UK are set to be billeted on the 222-berth barge Bibby Stockholm while they wait for their asylum claims to be processed. It is expected to be in use for 18 months.

It will be moored in Portland Port, near Weymouth, and is said to have been refurbished since the Dutch government used it for the same purpose, when it was described as an “oppressive environment.”

Drax’s constituency includes Portland, so the reason he doesn’t want this seems clear (Not In My Back Yard-ism).

According to the BBC,

he was “very concerned” about the impact on the area which “relies on small businesses”.

That being said, the mere fact of him opposing this should carry some weight.

The plan has been touted as a way to get asylum-seekers out of hotels where their accommodation has been costing the government more than £6 million per day and angering local residents.

But Labour has said it is

“in addition to hotels, not instead of them, and is still more than twice as expensive as normal asylum accommodation”.

So whichever way you slice it, the evidence in support of this new scheme is wafer-thin.

Keir Starmer’s latest announcements offer us NOTHING

Keir Starmer: a flag and a fancy haircut are no substitute for political policies that might help people.

Keir Starmer took the opportunity of an LBC radio appearance to tell junior doctors and refugees that he doesn’t support them against the government.

Who does he help, apart from himself? Good question.

Responding to a junior doctor who asked whether a Labour government would provide full pay restoration – bring pay back up to the level enjoyed under Gordon Brown’s New Labour administration – he said he could not make that promise, but he was grateful for what junior doctors do and wanted them to know he was on their side.

That doesn’t pay the bills.

And, challenged on what he would do for asylum-seekers, he said putting them into concentration camps on military bases was unavoidable, and did not put forward any alternative ideas to relieve the pressure that has been created by the failure of the Tories to address the issue in any meaningful way.

What was his message to the voters of the UK?

It was simply this: he offers us nothing.

Suella Braverman: wrong on crime, wrong on Rwanda, wrong on her own expenses

Suella Braverman: it all seems to be beyond her capabilities – her job, her expenses… everything.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s appearances on the Sunday morning political shows really were a plane crash, weren’t they?

She was wrong on sex offences in the UK, blaming “British Pakistani grooming gangs” for the majority when, as Angela Rayner pointed out last week, 300 rapes are committed every day – mostly by white men – and Braverman’s police officers turn a blind eye:

And isn’t this response pertinent?

Jeffrey Epstein may be described as the “groomer to the powerful”. Who did he supply with youngsters for sex? Why can’t the facts be told? Who is being protected?

Meanwhile, on Laura Kuennsberg’s show, Braverman insisted that Rwanda is a safe country to which our refugees can be sent. Is it, though?

She told Kuennsberg seven million people in the UK are out of work; in fact, official figures show the number to be much lower – just 1,253,000.

And finally, while all this has been going on, it seems she’s another Tory who won’t get her expenses claim right:

It seems she

claimed almost £25,000 in expenses over five years to pay for her energy usage and other costs, while living rent-free at her parent’s house during visits to her constituency.

Such financial aids were created to prevent MPs who live outside of London from falling into debt while running two homes, however an investigation by the Mirror found that Ms Braverman uses them to cover the household bills on her £1.2million family home in Bushey, Herts.

Although her expenses do not go against the rules, the hardline Tory has been accused of taking advantage of loophole in the system.

Ms Braverman, who earns £67,505 on top of her MP salary of £84,144, told watchdogs she “fully funds” the home she stays at in Fareham, Hants. However, she failed to explain that the house is actually her parents’ – meaning she stays there rent-free.

Apparently that massive Ministerial salary isn’t enough for her – even though she’s clearly incapable of doing the job properly.

Rwanda refugee deal is reciprocal: the UK should take people from there. But will it?

Suella Braverman in Rwanda: she can send people there, but if that country’s government invokes the part of the deal in which it sends people to the UK, it seems she’ll renege on it.

It’s good to know that Suella Braverman will lie in the face of the facts during a TV interview when she is confronted with them.

BBC reporters have examined the deal by which the UK gets to send refugees to Rwanda, and it is reciprocal; Rwanda will be able to send people to this country in return.

But when Braverman – who is the UK’s Home Secretary, remember – was confronted with this, she flatly denied that it would happen:

Notice that she didn’t say it wasn’t a part of the deal.

It seems likely, therefore, that the UK will renege on the deal, should Rwanda try to invoke that part of it.

What then? An international incident?
