If you’re hoping for an in-depth analysis of all the Tory crowing in support of Suella Braverman’s racist, sexist and homophobic speech against immigration at a US think tank last week, I’m happy to disappoint you.
There’s really very little to say about a lot of Tories supporting an unacceptable view.
I’ve already provided my comments on the speech itself, here.
But I did want to highlight what I think is the best comment on it, which came in musical form. Here it is:
We stand and sing in solidarity with a different vision from #Braverman's of what our country stands for & who it should stand by🧡 pic.twitter.com/jdRTsoTyn4

The Tories say: “We don’t care about global warming; we’re granting 100 new fossil fuel drilling licences!” And Keir Starmer says: “That’s fine! We won’t rescind them!”
The Tories say: “We don’t care about the risk to life and limb; we’re going to cram asylum-seeking refugees like sardines into a floating firetrap!” And Keir Starmer says: “That’s fine! We’ll do that too!”
The Tories say: “We’re going to privatise more of the NHS!” And Keir Starmer says: “Ha ha! We’ll privatise more than the Tories!”
When the policies are mostly Tory, the party behind them is mostly Tory too.
Put another way:
Zack is correct. Never ever forget that the lesser of two evils is still evil. Labour are simply evil light. #DietEvil. https://t.co/BpEnML7v2b
Don’t vote Diet Tory. Remember, the point of the video is how rubbish Starmer is.

Boris Johnson: was this his expression after seeing Russell Howard’s summary of his time in office?
He may be frothing at the mouth with fury at the recommendations of the Commons Privileges Committee but we can still have a laugh at Boris Johnson’s expense.
Russell Howard has offered up a compilation of the best Boris Johnson moment from his TV show, which is just the thing to brighten up a hot and humid weekend.
Sadly, when trying to link it, I’ve discovered – well, read it for yourself. If you’re old enough (ha ha ha!) then please click on the link. It’s well worth it!

Those of you who are familiar with Jonathan Pie will not have expected him to let this one pass without comment.
Here he is in full flow – mixing excellent points that seem to have passed beyond the understanding of senior Tory MPs with the kind of vitriol that might burn your ears off. So be careful:
One point: while Harriet Harman certainly could not have removed Boris Johnson from Parliament by herself, and there was no recommendation for him to be removed at all, it is not true that his constituents were the only people who could force him out; MPs could have done it is a motion to change his punishment to expulsion were supported by the House of Commons.
Any argument about that is entirely academic though, because – as the estimable Mr Pie has observed – Boris Johnson quit of his own accord.

A big mistake by Rishi Sunak has led to his greatest – possibly only – contribution to UK culture…
And it’s sartorial.
You see, it turns out that he has shockingly bad taste in footwear.
The boots he’s been wearing are … a feast for the eyes, and when he was filmed wearing them on a channel patrol before giving a speech about his “Stop the Boats” policy, well… the public response was predictable:
For those who wonder why there are always attempts to limit the reach of social media posts: it’s because of things like this.

Rishi Sunak: has he actually received any communications like the satirical memo from “Jon Swift II”? If so, did it put an expression like this on his face?
An organisation called 99% has produced a document that it alleges was passed to it by a member with contacts close to the government – and which purports to show how Rishi Sunak can win the next election.
It’s clearly an April Fool’s joke because it is apparently a memo from “Jon Swift II” – a reference to the satirist Jonathan Swift.
The trouble is, in places it seems alarmingly plausible.
In the section marked “Disinform“, for example, it states:
With the support of the media, it is still possible to persuade many people that the UK is suffering from global issues and handling them better than other countries.
I am impressed by the work that Chancellor Hunt is doing – given current performance, it is not easy to maintain a stance that the UK has the fastest growth rate in the G7, but he seems able to deliver the line straight to camera. And he has positioned himself (and you) well to take credit for the inevitable fall in inflation.
Indeed. Note that the UK’s growth rate may take on a much weaker quality if it is examined over a period of several years – and of course the fall in inflation is inevitable and has nothing to do with the Tories.
Remember also that a fall in inflation doesn’t mean prices will drop. It just means they will rise at a slower rate, so those effective pay cuts everybody has been taking don’t look so clever now, do they?
A subdivision marked “Divide the population” states:
Anti-immigrant rhetoric works extremely well, especially coupled with “over stretched public services”.
It continues:
I would single out Suella Braverman for her use of inflammatory rhetoric – it is no small achievement to blame 40,000 economically inactive (at government insistence) people for the economic woes of 68 million.
Finally, for this article, a section marked “Destroy” calls on Sunak to
Destroy democracy: make it practically impossible to elect any other party.
You need a plausible excuse to delay the elections if you cannot win them, and that will require violence on the streets (which you must be able to blame on your opponents, of course).
So far, the violence has been on the part of far-right groups, so you need to change that. Your policy of criminalising climate protests and inflaming the workers’ strikes is sound. I am sure it is not beyond your abilities to find ways of ensuring that some of these erupt into violence.
How interesting. I find it highly credible that the Tories are criminalising protests and attacking striking workers to create left-wing violence threats – in the mind of the general public, at least.
The memo concludes:
I need not remind you that, should you relinquish power, an incoming administration would set up investigations and inquiries into corruption and other issues which would be extremely damaging to you and your party.
Fake, it may be – but it seems some of the threats in this document are all-too-real.

Rishi Sunak and the Tories: the biggest political April Fool of this or any other year is the fact that they are (allegedly) running the country.
Way back when I was working on the old Bristol Journal, we used to put out a special supplement on the week of April Fool’s Day, with stories suggesting the former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was now living in a flat in Hartcliffe, and the annual Balloon Fiesta was now to be restricted to the then defunct Avon House, former home of Avon County Council.
Do newspapers still do that?
I’ve found a few examples of the same thing online…
"It was an offer that I simply could not refuse. This is the perfect opportunity to flip this dysfunctional system on its head and turn it into a regulator that actually regulates. I would be a fool not to accept." https://t.co/4KtCGdB9hU
It's got to the point now where I have come to the conclusion that if you can't beat them, join them. Following the announcement that Henry Smith is standing down as MP at the next GE I can announce that I have been accepted to stand in Crawley for the Conservatives. Solidarity!
Sadly, no Graun cartoon from me today. Nor ever again, actually, as I’m delighted to announce that from Monday I become @GBNEWS cartoonist in residence, providing rib-tickling content between the wise & popular broadcasts of @danwootton & @thecoastguy. What an opportunity!
Have you found any fun ones? Please let me know in the comments.

“Nazi Germany rhetoric demeaned, otherised and dehumanised people, made them the enemy and the scapegoat of all its woes, and attacked anybody who said differently as enemies of the people.”
That’s just what Suella Braverman has been doing, of course.
And neither she nor any other Tory is telling you that asylum applications – including those from the “small boat” Channel migrants – are about half what they were 20 years ago, yet the number of asylum applications processed within six months has fallen from around 90 per cent to just four per cent, under Tory administration.
It’s typical Tory cack-handedness; they created the problem and their answer to it is a three-word slogan. It’s Covid-19 all over again.
And Pie’s explosion at Braverman daring to lecture us about British values is well worth the four minutes of your time it takes to watch this, on its own.
