Former government lawyer responds appropriately to claim the ‘blob’ forced out Boris Johnson

Jake Berry: apparently the person behind him is a more astute political operator than he and his Tory colleagues.

David Allen Green of the Law and Policy Blog has been commenting usefully on the Covid and Partygate inquiries and their effect on Boris Johnson.

This Writer was therefore keen to read his response to former Tory chairman Jake Berry’s tweet, below:

I was not disappointed. Here’s what David Allen Green had to say about Berry’s intervention:

“Blobby blobby blob blob blobby,” blob Sir Jake Berry.

Blobby!

But.

Blobby blobby blob Brexit, blobby blob?

“Blobby blobby,” blob Mr Blobby.

Blobby blobby Privileges Committee, blobby blobby Boris Johnson?

“Blobby blobby,” blob Mr Blobby.

Well.

Blobby blobby blobby.

Blob, blob.

I’m sure we can all agree that this was indeed the appropriate response to the issues the former Tory Chairman has raised.

Like many of the comments by Rishi Sunak in Prime Minister’s Question, I think the public should be expected to consider it a full and frank answer, and the matter now closed.

Has Tory Jake Berry embarked on a new career as a political irritant?

Irritant: Jake Berry.

Former Conservative Party chairman Jake Berry seems to have embarked on a new career course – as an irritant.

Watch him in his appearance on the BBC’s Politics Live, where he came out with a series of falsehoods, overtalked other guests, and tried to start argument after argument.

I was live-tweeting at the time and tried to comment on as many of his shenanigans as possible. Feel free to comment down below on his words, my observations and anything I missed.

Former Tory chairman says Sunak should suspend Zahawi – but why not ‘drain the swamp’?

Jake Berry: his BBCQT appearance needs to be seen to be believed.

The BBC’s flagship Question Time programme featured an extraordinary display of backstabbing by a Tory MP against his Cabinet replacement.

Former Tory chairman Jake Berry, asked whether his successor Nadhim Zahawi should stay in post after revelations about his tax affairs, started out with a classic ‘resume statement’, praising his party colleague – but then veered off-topic sharply, saying a mechanism should be in place for Zahawi to step back from government while he was being investigated, and be reinstated if vindicated.

It’s not a bad idea but it has been around for some time – it’s called suspension. He would not lose his job as an MP, and could come back later.

Berry then manufactured an argument with Tracy (“Drain the swamp!”) Brabin over the role of independent ethics advisor Sir Laurie Magnus.

Probably the best comment from an audience member came from a GP who said there had been so many similar scandals in the Tory government that it seemed impossible to trust anybody in the party at all.

The debate ranged across all the information that has come out so far and I have tried to ensure that these are all included in the clip, so we can all refer back to it.

Party chairman lays out the DISGUSTING Tory line on too-high energy bills

Jake Berry: he looks like a far-right skinhead, and he acts like a far-right skinhead. Do you think it’s because he IS a far-right skinhead?

Jake Berry is the chairman of the Conservative Party. He can be expected to provide the party line on all the major issues.

So when he spoke out to address the concerns of ordinary people about energy bills that, even with Liz Truss’s price cap, are still too high, you can be sure it is what the Tories think.

Here’s what he said:

Let’s unpack that.

Firstly: the Conservative Party does not care if your bill is too much for you to pay.

Secondly: the Conservative Party is happy to let you freeze in your home, rather than take action to prevent that from happening.

Finally: the Conservative Party is happy to fob you off by saying you should try to take a non-existent “higher-paying job” if you want to heat your home properly.

Jake Berry: ignorant Tory who likened opera houses with football clubs is OWNED on Twitter

Jake Berry: he thinks art is for cultured southerners, while northerners consider their culture to be football.

Jake Berry may have an ordinary-sounding name but he’s as entitled – and dim-witted – as all the other Tory toffs.

He recently exhibited his staggering Tory ignorance while actually trying to do something decent – appealing for government cash to help northern football clubs.

The trouble was not in the intention, but in the delivery of the appeal. He suggested that people in the south of England consider the Royal Opera House and the ballet to be “at the heart of their culture”, while those in the north consider their culture to be housed in their local football stadia.

He could not see how insulting this is.

He was basically saying that northerners are uncultured louts whose principle joy in life is seeing a leather bladder being kicked around a field on a Saturday afternoon, whereas southerners are refined, and are therefore able to appreciate exclusive art forms like music and ballet.

A put-down was in order – and has been duly delivered:

Take your medicine, Berry.

Blatant corruption as Jenrick and fellow Tory Berry allocate millions to each other’s constituencies

Robert Jenrick: he reckons it is ‘perfectly normal’ for ministers to corruptly funnel money from their own department’s funds into their own constituencies.

“Perfectly normal” is it, Robert Jenrick?

If you are utterly corrupt, it might be perfectly normal to allocate millions of pounds from a regeneration fund to your fellow MP’s constituency in return for him giving £25 million to yours. Not if you’re honest!

Jenrick tried to brazen out the Labour Party’s accusation against him when he appeared on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show:

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick has dismissed Labour’s call for an investigation into the award of a £25m regeneration grant to his constituency.

He told BBC One’s Andrew Marr show the decision to give the money to Newark, Nottinghamshire, had been taken by fellow minister Jake Berry.

Mr Jenrick said he had himself decided to grant funds to a town in Mr Berry’s constituency under the same scheme.

He called this “perfectly normal” and accused Labour of “distraction”.

The £25m was awarded to Newark under the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s £3.6bn Towns Fund, set up last year to help places that had “not always benefitted from economic growth in the same way as more prosperous areas”.

Here’s a clip of him doing just that:

Jenrick is the Secretary of State for Housing and Berry is a minister within the same government department.

The public has already passed its own verdict on whether the decisions were corrupt – and both Jenrick and Berry have been found lacking:

There will be no inquiry into this and neither Jenrick nor Berry will face the sack, or even any disciplinary action. Boris Johnson’s government doesn’t believe it is accountable to the public.

They’ll probably divert attention by claiming the controversy is about something different. Jenrick has already tried:

He added: “This is perfectly normal. Ministers don’t get involved in making decisions for their own constituency.

“But neither should their constituencies be victims of the fact that their MP is a minister.”

That is not the issue. Just to spell it out so it is perfecly clear: The issue is that ministers from the Ministry of Housing have colluded to funnel cash from that ministry’s Towns Fund into their own constituencies.

Jenrick’s passion for corruption is already well-established – remember the controversy over his decision to help Richard Desmond avoid paying £50 million to a community where he wanted to build a new development that did not conform to planning rules.

Now we may add Berry to our ever-growing list of corrupt Tories.
