Jane Dodds: Another spamming leaflet – another pack of lies. Who’d vote Lib Dem now?

This bird is dead: The Liberal Democrats have shot down their own chances in Brecon and Radnorshire by annoying residents with false claims.

The latest stunt from attention-seeking Liberal Democrat spammer Jane Dodds is – surprise, surprise – yet another leaflet to clog up letterboxes in Brecon and Radnorshire, this time masquerading as a newspaper.

This is a common tactic by political parties in the run-up to an election; as long as they make it clear that it is an election communication on behalf of their organisation, it is permitted and perusal of the (very) small print on the front page does indicate this, if you get your magnifying glass out.

The propaganda starts at the very top of page one, with a claim that the Yellow Tories are “The winning team for Brecon and Radnorshire”. It’s a classic brainwashing/programming technique to make you think the LDs are going to win and encourage you to vote for what you’ve been told will be the winning side. Peer pressure – nothing more than that. But then the sub-headline says, “Your vote can make the difference this Thursday.” Why should it? This rag has already told us the LDs are “the winning team”. What a contradiction.

The headline itself, “Time for change,” is misleading. We’ve had either Liberal Democrats or Conservatives as MP here in Brecon and Radnorshire since 1979 and they have contributed nothing to improve lives here. Average wages are 25 per cent lower than nationally and the standard of living is similarly depressed. That is a failure by our representatives and the LDs must take their share of responsibility for that.

“Both opinion polls and bookmakers odds show a surge in support for hardworking candidate Jane Dodds as the best person to deliver the change Brecon and Radnorshire needs,” the text states. But it does not provide evidence to support these claims. And we already know Ms Dodds won’t be “hardworking” – her local policies depend on decisions made by other organisations like the Labour-run Welsh Assembly Government.

It goes on to say she has been “fighting for improvement in local healthcare” (nothing to do with her – it’s a devolved responsibility, handled by the Welsh Assembly Government) and “standing up for Welsh farmers” (the claim – elsewhere in the leaflet – that the Tories are planning to put a 40 per cent tariff on farming is not accurate, and of course with only two per cent of MPs in Parliament – or fewer – the LDs, with or without Ms Dodds, will have no effect at all on what happens).

A strapline running across the bottom of pages two and three states: “POLL LATEST: Labour are 150/1 outsiders – they can’t win on Thursday”. Again, the implication is that you should be voting for the candidate you have been told is most likely to win. This is completely at odds with democracy. The point of any election is for the electorate to vote for the candidate you think will do the best job.

Clearly, Ms Dodds won’t do the best job for Brecon and Radnorshire. This Writer doesn’t expect her to do any work at all.

On page four, we get rent-a-quotes from people we’re supposed to believe are members of the public who’ve been persuaded to vote Liberal Democrat. But at least one of them is known to This Writer as a card-carrying member of the Liberal Democrats. Are they all party members? The fact that just one of them belongs to that party shows that this is an attempt to hoodwink us.

Flip back to page two and there’s a quote from Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price AM, stating: “Putting party politics aside and delivering a pro-Remain MP for Brecon and Radnorshire is what is most important.” If you agree, vote for Labour’s Tom Davies. He supports another referendum, in which he will campaign for remaining in the EU. New Lib Dem leader Jo “let’s build a monument to Maggie” Swinson is on the record as saying that she would ignore democracy in order to push her own agenda.

No wonder a friend on Facebook said they had seen three new notices asking for no more “Jane Dodds spam”, while passing through Newbridge-on-Wye recently.

Ms Dodds is not telling you the truth, and neither is her party. She is spamming you with leaflet after leaflet in a bid to brainwash voters into supporting her in spite of the facts.

If This Writer had any influence, I would be saying that she is right in just one respect: You should send a message to the political establishment…

And the best way to do that is by voting for Labour’s Tom Davies.

Brexit Party tour bus towed after it was found wedged in a lay-by

Wedged: The Brexit bus in the lay-by. According to the arrow on the side, the direction of Brexit is straight into a hedge.

How ironic for the party that says it has the muscle to leave the European Union; it can’t even manage its way out of a lay-by outside Brecon and Radnorshire.

The Brexit Party has been using the distinctive blue-and-white open-topped bus to ferry its candidate in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election, Des Parkinson, around the constituency.

But the tour came to a thudding halt yesterday when the bus was found, abandoned and wedged sideways in a lay-by at Nantddu, outside the constituency on the road between Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil.

BBC Wales weather presenter Sue Charles discovered the abandoned bus on her way through the Brecon Beacons last night (July 27):

She contacted the police, who had been informed already. This morning, she followed up on it – and Twitter started having fun:

https://twitter.com/Arboritae/status/1155439383748718593

I’ve contacted Des Parkinson to ask what happened. If he responds, I’ll report it here.

‘Spammer’ Jane Dodds has put Brecon and Radnorshire voters off her

From a window in Brecon and Radnorshire: Liberal Democrat Jane Dodds has “spammed” voters with so many leaflets that they can’t wait to see the back of her.

I found the image above on a local friend’s Facebook page. It – and the comments it attracted – illustrate the strength of feeling against Liberal Democrat by-election candidate Jane Dodds after she dumped more than 24 pieces of junk mail on residents of the constituency.

It seems people no longer care about Ms Dodds’s policies. They just want her to go away and never come back.

According to a commenter on my friend’s page, by July 24, “There’s been 24 so far.. I have a contact collecting them!”

Another added: “We get 4 of everything[. I’m] sick of seeing her name.”

Another: “Yet another one in the post this morning!!”

I stopped counting at 13. They’re still coming thick and fast though,” said yet another resident.

“Opened the postbox tonight and there was another!” From another exasperated voter.

And another commenter said the constant leaflet drops were “Bordering on harassment!”

That’s exactly what it is. And how much is it costing?

The price of 25 (and increasing…) leaflets, going to tens of thousands of households in Brecon and Radnorshire, must be considerable. One of them was glossy and ran to several pages. Even if they were all hand-delivered, the price must run to thousands of pounds.

And what about the cost of transporting all these Lib Dem adherents from other parts of the country? I met a man from the West Country in a pub a few weeks ago and I understand others have come from across the UK. What has their party contributed to their expenses?

No matter what the result of the election, I think we’re going to need to examine Ms Dodds’s expenses in close detail.

And remember: If you’re as sick of the sight of her as everybody else, don’t vote for her! If you want to support a Remainer candidate – who can actually help that cause – vote for Labour’s Tom Davies.

Voters: It’s not smart to second-guess the result of this by-election!

This is bad news for smug Liberal Democrats who reckon they’ve got the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election as good as won.

It seems people on the doorstep have been assuring them of support – even putting their poster up in household windows – while actually planning to vote Labour.

That’s what This Writer is hearing on the street, anyway.

I’m told voters are sick to the back teeth of the constant barrage of canvassers hanging on the doorbell and leaflets banging through the letterbox. They don’t feel persuaded – they feel attacked.

Worse than that – the revelation that canvassers have been lying to voters, claiming that Labour isn’t even fielding a candidate in this by-election (his name is Tom Davies) has appalled people across the constituency.

I reported yesterday that a canvasser had been found spreading this lie in Cwmtwrch and Penycae, and steps are being taken to find out who is responsible and deliver appropriate punishment.

But it seems this person was not the only one.

“The same thing happened to me in Builth Wells, their canvasser told me there was no Labour candidate standing. Shameless lies. Well there is, his name is Tom Davies and he gets my vote,” wrote a commenter on Facebook.

I’m also hearing of similar occurrences elsewhere.

So now it seems those who thought the result was a foregone conclusion are mistaken. And people who have been persuaded to lend the Liberal Democrat their vote – in the belief that it will stop Tory Chris ‘The Convict’ Davies and Brexiteer Des Parkinson – have been misled.

Many of these voters have been encouraged to vote for Jane Dodds because of peer pressure – they’ve been told she’ll win anyway and want to support the winner.

Now it isn’t so simple. Or is it?

Everybody seems to have forgotten one simple fact:

The aim of a Parliamentary election should be to put someone in Parliament who is the best representative for the people of the constituency.

If you don’t think that person is Jane Dodds, then don’t vote for her! It really is that simple. More so, now that we’ve seen her campaign is a tissue of cynical, manipulative lies.

In fact, if you want to support a ‘Remainer’ candidate, Labour’s Tom Davies is a better choice. His party is campaigning for a new referendum on EU membership, with remaining in the bloc as one of the choices available – and he will campaign to remain.

So remain-supporting voters in Brecon and Radnorshire have a choice between Ms Dodds – who will be able to achieve nothing as her party’s representation in Parliament is too small – or Mr Davies, who would join the main Opposition party to the Brexiteer Tory government.

Mr Davies is the logical choice. Let’s see how many voters realise that.

Lib Dems reckon they’re odds-on to win in Brecon and Radnorshire – because of their lies?

“Want change?” thunders the latest glossy brochure from Liberal Democrat by-election candidate Jane Dodds. It fails to add the fact of the matter: “You won’t get it with me!”

Instead it quotes betting odds, apparently from Ladbrokes on July 12, stating that Ms Dodds is the 1/7 favourite to win the seat, with Tory expenses faker Chris Davies at 7/1, Des Parkinson for the Brexit Party at 12/1 and Tom Davies for Welsh Labour at 100/1.

I can’t find any predictions for the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election on the Ladbrokes website so there is no way to confirm these figures.

The derisory treatment of Labour suggests that this is the party Ms Dodds really fears. Why else would her canvassers be trying to convince voters in Labour strongholds like Cwmtwrch and Penycae that Labour isn’t even standing?

Ms Dodds’ campaign really has been the lowest of the low.

The local policies she offers are primarily things that are already happening, courtesy of other organisations like Ofcom (broadband) or the Labour-run Welsh Assembly Government (healthcare and economic improvement).

As a Liberal Democrat, she cannot influence Parliamentary decisions on Brexit and anybody supporting her for her party’s ‘Remain’ stance is throwing their vote away on a protest.

Labour is the only choice for real change. Claims that the party’s policy on Brexit is confused are lies. Claims that it is mired in anti-Semitism are lies.

And you know why?

Because people like Jane Dodds know they can only beat Labour by making a fool out of you.

And that is the full extent of their purpose.

They won’t do anything to help you, if they get elected.

They will simply reinforce the hard, right-wing, neoliberal consensus that has squashed working people for the last nine years since the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats entered their unholy alliance to inflict unnecessary austerity on us while filling their own pockets.

But don’t take my word for it. If Ms Dodds wins, you’ll be able to see for yourself. Any progress will be from policies already enacted by Ofcom and by Labour. The Yellow Tory will do nothing for you.

Jane Dodds lies again

Jane Dodds: She has been lying about health again.

I wonder how many voters in Brecon and Radnorshire will be fooled by this?

Yet another letter from Jane Dodds oozed through my letterbox this morning.

She’s the Liberal Democrat candidate in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election.

She wants us to elect her on the basis that the Liberal Democrats want to force the UK to remain in the European Union, whether we want to or not – and on the basis that she isn’t a Conservative or a member of the Brexit Party – both of whose candidates would be equally poor choices for Parliament.

She has no local policy platform at all. Every promise she has made to local people has been something that is already being delivered by other agencies.

If elected, she has promised to do exactly nothing for anybody, other than collect her £70,000-a-year taxpayer-funded paycheque.

Her letter today was similarly nonsensical as it was about health – a devolved issue.

“If you choose to send me to Westminster in the by-election on 1st August, I’ll prioritise fighting for better healthcare for local people,” it states.

But she can’t, because healthcare is a matter for Welsh Assembly members and is nothing to do with MPs.

What a liar.

It would be a crime against the UK to make this person a member of Parliament.

How needy is this? Liberal Democrat sends leaflet after leaflet of flapdoodle into our letterboxes

Truer words were never told: I don’t know the context of Lana Lane’s original post but it applies very well to constituents of Brecon and Radnorshire who might actually be considering placing their vote with the Liberal Democrat candidate – or indeed the Conservative, Brexit and UKIP candidates, for that matter.

I don’t know about you but I am sick to death of Jane Dodds, the Liberal Democrat candidate in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election.

We constituents are being bombarded by her. Leaflet after leaflet comes thudding through our doors.

Campaigner after campaigner has come tramping up to finger our doorbells.

Yesterday (July 13), no less than four different election communications landed on my doorstep.

Two were about Brexit. The first – a letter – said, “As your new MP, I’ll fight to stop Brexit. I’ll work hard every day to stand up for local jobs, our NHS and for the local community services we all depend on.”

How? How, exactly, is she going to do that?

She doesn’t say. She scares local farmers with a warning that the “no-deal” Brexit plans of Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage will saddle them with 40 per cent tariffs on lamb exports – but doesn’t say a single word about how she would stop it, because she can’t. One MP won’t make any difference at all.

In fact, she wouldn’t have to do anything in any case. Current Parliamentary arithmetic makes a “no-deal” Brexit of this kind unlikely to win any support at all, and if any future prime minister tries it, it would probably break their government.

What does she mean by saying she’ll “stand up” for local jobs and community services? That doesn’t imply that she’ll actually do anything – and you’d be a fool to think that she will.

And of course the NHS is a devolved responsibility; the Welsh Assembly has responsibility for it, not Parliament, so Ms Dodds won’t have any influence over it at all.

The second – a leaflet intended to gather voter information (that’s what the coupon at the bottom is for) – is even more misleading. “This by-election is a unique and urgent opportunity to change the direction of our country,” it states.

How is Jane Dodds, a member of a minority party who has lost three elections in Montgomeryshire, going to manage that where so many hundreds of experienced Parliamentarians have failed? She won’t.

If she wins on the basis of this information, then I invite Liberal Democrat voters to come back after October 31 and demonstrate how she stopped Brexit.

The third election communication – another letter – is so full of flannel I thought she was trying to wash me. Or brainwash me, at least.

“I want to do more to tackle injustice, help people to get the best chance in life, and end years and years of being let down by Westminster politicians.” Flannel!

“Living here in Powys, just outside Welshpool, I understand all too well just how important it is that we have an MP who understands the unique challenges we all face.” Flannel – and falsehood. Welshpool isn’t in Brecon and Radnorshire and conditions there are different.

“I love living in Powys but that does not mean I don’t think it can be even better.” Flannel!

“At home and in Westminster, I will fight to fix our broken politics. I will fight to help protect our Welsh health services. And I will fight to stand up for Welsh farmers and businesses.” Flannel!

Worse still is the claim that she has been “overwhelmed by the number of Labour, Plaid and Green supporters who’ve told me that they will be backing me in this election”. I know that Plaid Cymru and the Green Party stood aside to allow Ms Dodds to be the single candidate who unequivocally supports the undemocratic position of cancelling Brexit without referring the decision back to the people of the UK – but Labour hasn’t. For the good of the whole of the UK, Labour won’t.

And while it is entirely likely that some habitual Labour voters have been hoodwinked by the usual Liberal Democrat flannel that a tactical vote for them is the only way to keep out the Tories or the other right-wingers, I think her claim that “many” have done so is stretching credibility to breaking-point.

Finally, the fourth election communication was another leaflet, containing her “positive plan” for Brecon and Radnorshire. Here are the bullet-points:

  • “Back our health services and improve social care” – this is a devolved responsibility that is nothing to do with Westminster MPs.
  • “Protect vital rural services” – an impossibility for a single MP in a party that is not in government.
  • “Oppose Conservative cuts” – a meaningless promise, especially from a member of the party that, in Coalition with the Conservatives, helped impose many of those cuts between 2010 and 2015. That’s the reason I used the image at the top of this piece, warning about people voting for the removal of free health care, free education, affordable housing and social security. As a Liberal Democrat, Ms Dodds belongs to a party that helped push us towards the dismantling of those vital services – and a vote for her now may well help finish the job.
  • “Fix our broken politics” – another meaningless promise, and she doesn’t even try to say what this means.
  • “Stand up for Welsh farmers and local businesses” – also meaningless, because she does not say what she will do.

The end result is a big pile of waste paper, covered in soundbites. Ms Dodds doesn’t even talk a good fight.

She just fills our homes with meaningless gibberish.

And how will she be if she wins? My bet is, we’ll never hear from her again – at least until the next election.

By-election voters don’t need to exchange one bad right-wing MP for another one. Here’s the reason

Brecon and Radnorshire seems to be disappearing into a weird consensus reality in which the Liberal Democrats are actually being considered a serious alternative to the Conservatives, capable of standing up to them in Parliament. Has everybody here gone mad?

No. They are just falling prey to a well-oiled propaganda machine that the party known as the Fib Dems is using to steamroller all opposition.

But it may well run out of steam before we reach polling day on August 1 – especially as some of us are getting very good at debunking the falsehoods.

For example:

Yesterday (July 7), This Writer received a letter from Liberal Democrat candidate Jane Dodds, asking me to sign her petition to improve access to dentists in Llandrindod Wells. This is actually a genuine issue here.

But it is a devolved issue. Ms Dodds states: “My colleague Kirsty Williams AM has been working with Powys Teaching Health Board to tackle access to dentists and I will work with her and all parties to help resolve these issues” but it is nothing to do with her. If she becomes MP and the issue is resolved, it seems likely that she will try to take credit for something she won’t have done.

This seems to be the pattern with all of the policies so far announced by this charlatan. I have already detailed reasons why we should doubt her claims about bringing improved broadband and more investment into the constituency.

Elsewhere on the social media, This Writer has become involved in several discussions about Liberal Democrat policy positions. As readers of This Site will know, I characterise the Liberal Democrats as a right-wing, authoritarian, neoliberal, austerity-supporting, privatising party – based on their record – and it infuriates me when their supporters describe them as centrist or even as a party of the left.

I eventually had to dig out the voting record of LD leadership candidate Jo Swinson to demonstrate the facts of the matter.

Ms Swinson is a dedicated Liberal Democrat and has supported her party in the vast majority of votes.

She has supported the Bedroom Tax, benefit cuts, the persecution of the sick and disabled, and cuts to local authority support for council taxpayers, among other things:

She voted to increase tuition fees to £9,000 per year after the Liberal Democrats promised to abolish them, to bring schools into private ownership, and to cut financial support for students.

Her environmental credentials are similarly appalling: She voted to sell our state-owned forests into the hands of developers and commercial profiteers, in support of the badger cull, against green energy, and for fracking. On climate change, her position is ambiguous – and we should take heed of that when Jane Dodds makes wild claims about wanting to fight climate change as Brecon and Radnorshire’s MP.

Finally, I pointed out that Ms Swinson voted to privatise the Royal Mail, to cut legal aid – putting court action beyond the reach of most people, and to create secret courts – at which defendants were not to be told the charges against them or even any of the evidence.

These are all right-wing policies that would make many Conservatives proud – and may even be too extreme for some.

If Ms Swinson becomes Liberal Democrat leader, these will be her policy positions – or she’ll be a hypocrite. And the bad news is that the other leadership candidate, Ed Davey, differs only in that he has a better record on climate change (but not on fracking).

We also touched on another policy issue – the Liberal Democrats’ opposition to the Iraq War. This came about in an extremely bizarre manner, from a comment by a person who, told that Labour was “negative”, said they wanted “to stop seeing children going to school hungry and coming home to parents exhausted by irregular work or ridiculous DWP requirement and either homeless or terrified of becoming so… Its negativity to want children not to starve?”

The response was to claim that Labour was responsible for the deaths of children. Under challenge, this was justified by reference to the Iraq War.

My response: “That is a war against another country, not a policy enacted here. If you’re determined to invoke it, how many children died in Libya, due to the Coalition government’s intervention there? You might also consider the fact that airstrikes against Syria were only called off – famously – because of intervention from the Labour Party, supported by rebel Tories. The Liberal Democrats voted to support them, including current leader candidates Ed Davey and Jo Swinson.”

It seems the Liberal Democrats’ anti-war credentials aren’t all that they’re said to be, either!

So we came to the fall-back that has been the basis of the entire Liberal Democrat campaign in Brecon and Radnorshire – and across the UK: That it’s a “two-horse race” and they are the only party capable of beating the Conservatives.

This is a lie.

I can demonstrate that it is a lie with reference to just one sentence by a Lib Dem supporter: “How are you going to convince Tory voters to vote Labour? It is unrealistic to think that they will.”

My answer is that there is no need to get hardcore Tories to vote for Labour.

No less than six candidates are standing in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election, of which four are right-wing.

Leaving aside the Liberal Democrats for a moment, that means the right-wing vote will be split between Conservative Chris Davies, the Brexit Party’s Desmond Parkinson and UKIP’s Liz Phillips. It won’t be an even split but, considering the core Tory vote is around 9,000, it should be enough to stop any of them from winning.

The Monster Raving Loony Party will have a representative in Lady Lily the Pink, and she’ll pick up the votes protesting at the lunacy of politics in the UK at the moment.

That leaves Labour and the Liberal Democrats. The Lib Dems are trying hard to convince people that giving them a 13th MP will make them a formidable force to convince Parliament to revoke Article 50 so we can all remain in the European Union. That is not going to happen.

Take a look at the graph at the top of this article. Liberal Democrats have just 1.8 per cent of the MPs in the House of Commons. That’s 12 MPs. A 13th will give them exactly two per cent of sitting MPs. That isn’t enough to achieve any such radical change of policy.

Alternatively, the Liberal Democrats are trying to convince people that giving them another MP will stop a Brexiteer from taking the seat and steering us towards a disastrous departure from the EU. That is not going to happen either. Not only will the vote be split between three Brexiteer parties but there wasn’t enough consensus on Brexit to make it happen when Brexiteer Chris Davies was the MP here, so having another Brexiteer won’t make any difference.

So what is this really about?

I’ll tell you. It’s about stealing votes from Labour.

The Liberal Democrats have traditionally pressganged Lavbour supporters into supporting them in Brecon and Radnorshire, with the threat that – if they don’t – a Tory will take the seat.

Their infamous “two-horse race” block graph is set at false levels to make it seem the distance between the Labour and Liberal Democrat votes is greater than it is, precisely to encourage this belief. A friend of This Writer has created a more accurate graph and it is damning for the Lib Dems:

Put it all together and you’ll see that the best place for floating voters who want to defeat the Conservatives, and the other right-wingers, is Labour.

It’s a genuinely left-wing party, with policies that most people support, as I stated in a previous article. But for the benefit of those who missed it, a vote for Labour would be a vote to:

  • Ensure that at least 60 per cent of the UK’s heat and electricity will come from low-carbon or renewable sources by 2030 (polling suggests this was supported by 79 per cent of the electorate);
  • Cap rents at the rate of inflation (74 per cent);
  • Increase income tax for the top five per cent of earners (68 per cent);
  • Require businesses to reserve a proportion of seats on their boards for workers (63 per cent);
  • Re-nationalise the railways (60 per cent);
  • Re-nationalise utility companies like the energy and water firms (57 per cent);
  • Provide free university tuition for all students (55 per cent);
  • Prevent the UK from participating in military interventions in other countries (52 per cent).

And the party’s policy on Brexit is to let the people decide between ‘no deal’, any deal agreed by Parliament, and the possibility of remaining in the EU – which is more than anybody else is willing to offer, including the Liberal Democrats!

Labour’s 247 MPs totals only 38 per cent of the Commons, and another will increase that total only slightly. But 248 is a lot more than 13, and may attract support from other parties and even – in the case of Brexit/remain – from Conservatives.

And Labour’s Tom Davies isn’t misrepresenting himself, his party or his policies.

Put all these elements together and there’s a chance to make a genuine change for the better in Brecon and Radnorshire – and send a meaningful message back to Westminster.

That will be by returning a Labour MP to Parliament.

Latest Lib Dem election leaflet leaves a lot lacking – like HONESTY

Jane Dodds: The backcloth suggests we should “demand better” and it is absolutely right, for once.

The Liberal Democrats proceeded with their propaganda onslaught on the people of Brecon and Radnorshire last week, with a leaflet that – it seems to This Writer – should be investigated regarding the accuracy of its claims.

That in itself should speak volumes about what was printed on the front and back of a single sheet of paper.

The leaflet, on behalf of candidate Jane Dodds, brands her as “the strong, effective voice to fight for our community”, yet it makes policy claims that do not bear out this message.

“As our next MP, Jane will fight for more ambitious broadband targets from Westminster and force big broadband and mobile companies to deliver these decent services,” it claims.

But communications regulator Ofcom has already announced that everyone will have the right to demand a fast broadband service at a reasonable price from March next year.

This ‘universal broadband service’ safety net is set to help 620,000 homes and offices in the most remote parts of the UK – such as Brecon and Radnorshire.

So it seems all Ms Dodds would have to do, were she to be elected, is wait. She wouldn’t have to lift a finger because somebody else has already done all the hard work for her.

That is hardly the kind of conduct we should expect from an MP.

The leaflet states: “Jane will bring investment to our area to create good jobs, properly funded public services and affordable housing so people are not forced out of the communities they have grown up in.”

This seems very positive but, considering the claim about broadband, we should be cautious.

Work is about to begin on a new competition-standard BMX cycle track in Rhayader which, it is hoped, will encourage people to visit the town and make it the biking capital of Wales. The local county councillor has said this success is entirely due to the involvement of local people – but would Ms Dodds, as MP, try to take the credit?

Plans are well under way for a new “global centre of rail excellence” on the Neath Port Talbot/Brecon and Radnorshire border near Ystradgynlais, which would be a testing facility of international significance. This would be a huge economic boost to the constituency, so would Ms Dodds try to claim credit for it? If so, it would be a slap in the face for the real architect of the project, Labour Assembly Member and minister for the economy and transport.

Powys Teaching Health Board is about to receive a £1.5 million boost from the Welsh Assembly – a substantial investment in the public health service courtesy of Labour Assembly health minister Vaughan Gething. While health is a devolved issue, I wonder, would Ms Dodds try to say she had a hand in it, once the money comes through?

It may seem that my doubts about this Liberal Democrat’s honesty are a little too strong. If so, may I draw attention to the now-obligatory block graph on the leaflet? Here it is:

Does something seem… out of proportion to you?

If so, you’re absolutely right. The difference in votes between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats in the 2017 election – illustrated here – was 8,038, while the difference between the Liberal Democrats and Labour was just 4,708 – but look at how these differences are misrepresented on the graph! Readers are led to believe that Labour were twice as far behind the LDs as the LDs were behind the Conservatives – almost a total reversal of the truth.

With misrepresentations such as this, and policy claims that simply don’t stack up, no wonder Ms Dodds’s party is known locally as the Fib Dems.

Why have Plaid and the Greens given way to right-wing, pro-austerity Lib Dems in by-election?

As a resident of Brecon and Radnorshire, I find it strange that apparently left-wing parties like Plaid Cymru and the Greens are not fielding candidates in the by-election – because they are supporting the right-wing, pro-austerity, pro-privatisation Liberal Democrats.

Does that make any sense to anyone at all?

Sure, Plaid and the Greens want the UK to remain in the EU, which is the Lib Dems’ current vote-grubbing pose, but the leaders of those parties must know that giving the yellow peril another MP will only make it more likely to propose another coalition with the blue meanies (that’s the Tory Party to the uninitiated).

Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price said his party’s decision was intended to “coalesce support for the remain side in Wales”. But this reasoning doesn’t work.

A win in Brecon and Radnorshire would give the Liberal Democrats just 14 MPs – not enough to exert any effective influence over whether the UK stays in the EU or leaves it.

Did you hear any reports of the Liberal Democrats swaying any of the Brexit votes that Parliament has already held?

No. Neither did I.

These party representatives – and their voters – are either living in a unicorn-chasing fantasy land or they are deliberately misleading the public.

And in the meantime, nothing is said about the policies that directly affect the well-being of people in one of the UK’s most deprived rural constituencies.

What will a Liberal Democrat MP do to ease the burden caused by cuts to public services? Nothing – Liberal Democrats supported Tory austerity for five long years.

What will a Liberal Democrat MP do to help people struggling to make ends meet because they are on Universal Credit? Nothing – Liberal Democrats helped the Tories introduce the failed scheme that takes money away from claimants more often than giving it out.

How will a Liberal Democrat calm uncertainty facing businesses because of Brexit? She won’t – and this is crucial. Jane Dodds will not be able to influence business reactions to Brexit in any way at all.

It’s time voters in Brecon and Radnorshire woke up to the fact that they are being fed a line of propaganda.

A choice between two right-wing, austerity-loving, privatising neoliberal organisations is no choice at all – and the Brexit Party is a bad joke, as Ann Widdecombe proved this week.

If only there was a party standing in this election whose policies actually stood up for ordinary people, bolstered the fabric of our society, and made sense of the confusion over Brexit.

Oh, but of course there is!

It’s the party nobody in the mass media wants to talk about.

In Brecon and Radnorshire, Labour is the party for you.
