Matt Hancock donates just 3% of I’m A Celebrity fee to dyslexia campaign

Matt Hancock: cross-eyed and shameless.

Remember when it was announced that Matt Hancock was going into the jungle on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here and he said he was doing it to raise awareness of his dyslexia campaign.

You might have expected him to donate his £320,000 fee – or at least a majority of it – to such a campaign. He doesn’t need it on his large MP’s salary, after all – and he’s also been given a £48,000 advance for his Pandemic Diaries book (to be found in the fiction section of bookstores, perhaps).

And how much has he actually donated?

Just £10,000 – and that has been split between St Peter’s Hospice and the British Dyslexia Association.

Matt Hancock has so far donated just 3% of the fee he was paid for appearing on I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! to charity, it has been revealed.

The former health secretary received £320,000 for his stint on the reality show, of which £10,000 was donated to charity, according to the register of MPs’ financial interests.

A spokesperson for Hancock told BBC News: “As well as raising the profile of his dyslexia campaign in front of 11 million viewers, Matt’s donated £10,000 to St Nicholas hospice in Suffolk and the British Dyslexia Association.”

Let this be a lesson to ITV: Next time a politician says they’re doing a reality show to help a cause, have the extent of that help written into their contract.

Labour councillors complain their MP has blocked them – but is this the reason?

Ian Byrne: now it seems Labour members who unaccountably want to deprive their constituency of the MP of the Year are trying to intimidate him and his team.

Take a look at this tweet, and the reply it provoked, from a councillor in the constituency of MP of the Year Ian Byrne.

Despite winning the award for his excellent work, Byrne is facing an uphill struggle to be re-selected as the Labour candidate for Liverpool West Derby – because it seems the party’s leaders are deliberately trying to prevent it.

This Site reported on November 5 that

Labour has rescinded Mr Byrne’s access to Organise, the communication facility between the party hierarchy and its members.

His rival in the campaign – a shiny Wes Streeting-a-like from London – does have access to the tool and therefore has a huge advantage over Mr Byrne, who is reduced to trying to resource his reselection campaign on the social media.

Now this:

Nicola James makes a good point. Why would anybody think the MP of the Year is not worth re-selecting? That’s the first indication that something is amiss with Cllr Doyle’s complaint. As for the comment about abusive behaviour… well, here’s what Byrne himself has to say about it:

So he says he suffered intimidation from people including local politicians and will be taking up the matter, not just with the local authority but with the police as well.

This casts an entirely different light on Cllr Doyle’s words, it seems.

It also appears that right-wingers among the Labour members in the West Derby constituency are spreading what Byrne himself has described as myths about him, in a bid to persuade gullible colleagues that he’s not worth their vote. An astonishing claim about the MP of the Year!

Here’s his response, killing these claims with the facts:

For those of you who can’t read images, here’s what the text says:

Mythbusters

Sometimes during a campaign, facts get lost. Several West Derby members have made me aware of what they consider to be, at best, ‘odd’ conversations with representatives of other candidates over recent weeks.

In order to ensure there are no misunderstandings and that all West Derby members have access to the facts, I have put together this simple mythbuster to clarify a few points:

  • I voted Remain in the EU ref, not Brexit (as members inform me, they have been told by other campaigns). I also 100% respected the outcome of the vote.
  • My office was not closed for my first year in the role as MP. I set up a highly visible and accessible, brand new MP’s office in Tuebrook, one of the poorest wards in our constituency. Within the first few months of the role, I, like everyone, was subject to Covid-19 rules which I followed. My office was open 8am – 6pm durinq the pandemic but subject to the same lockdown and social distancing rules as everyone else.
Myself and my team worked non-stop during the pandemic and supported West Derby constituents in so many different ways. I sadly had to close the office to the public again earlier this year as a security precaution, due to frightening death threats made against myself, team and family by a far-right extremist posing outside the office. This does not mean myself and my team are not working, we are, all day, every day, for the people of West Derby.
  • As the MP for West Derby I am responsible for many things, all of which I take very seriously. Councillors have primary jurisdiction over local council issues such as traffic, potholes, dog muck and street lighting. Within West Derby, each ward has three local councillors who I support and encourage to carry out their roles fully.*
  • I am not obsessed with foodbanks. I am however committed to ending the need for foodbanks, and I make no apology for that. Please look at my work on the Right To Food campaign to see how I am challenging the need for the very existence of foodbanks: www.ianbyrne.org/righttofood

Thank you for your time.

Ian Byrne, MP Liverpool West Derby*Please see separate statement issued 13. 11.2022 regarding intimidation

Looking at Byrne’s preface to his statement, it seems clear that he’s saying “fair play and integrity” are no longer part of the Labour leadership’s skillset.

Perhaps, instead of trying to remove MPs who have those qualities – like Byrne himself – party members across the UK should concentrate on ridding their organisation of the parasites that have infested its head office instead.

Why did Boris Johnson quit the Tory leadership contest? Was it GREED?

Boris Johnson and money: did you think you would ever see this image again?

It seems Boris Johnson may not have pulled out of the Tory leadership race for the reasons he stated at the time, but because of selfishness.

“I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do,” he said at the time.

“You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.”

He was saying that he hoped the successful candidate would be able to unite the Conservative Party in a way that he – as a polarising figure – couldn’t.

But now members of the entertainment industry, of all places, have suggested that Johnson withdrew because he realised he could make much more money away from government than in it.

Since he resigned in July, Johnson is known to have been in talks with entertainment and talent agencies including Endeavour, run by US businessman Ari Emanuel, and the Harry Walker Agency (HWA), one of its subsidiaries.

His earning potential is suggested to be about £20 million per year – but only if he didn’t lose in a leadership election against Rishi Sunak. If that happened, his appeal to global audiences would disappear – cutting his earning potential by at least half, according to the talent industry.

A spokesman for Johnson has said that financial reasons were “totally irrelevant” to his decision. He would, wouldn’t he?

We may never know the full story. But with Johnson being such a flagrant self-publicist (why is he at COP 27, anyway?) it’s not beyond possibility that money might have played some part in his decision.

Is the Conservative Party imploding because of Sunak’s leadership victory?

The law of unforeseen consequences seems to be striking the Conservative Party hard.

Rishi Sunak has been elected unopposed as party leader, and is soon to be invited to be prime minister by King Charles III. We know that.

Some of us suspect that this was a result of behind-the-scenes shenanigans. Boris Johnson withdrew, despite having enough nominations (more on that elsewhere, possibly). And Penny Mordaunt may feel justifiably robbed of the nominations from Tory MPs who supported Johnson instead of her (while they may feel cheated out of having him on the ballot paper).

But it seems that nobody feels quite as scorned by the process as the Conservative Party membership – the rank-and-file members without whom the organisation cannot function.

It seems many of them are so incensed by the way they have been treated – cheated, maybe, out of electing a new leader – that they are pulling up their stumps and leaving, with former Brexit party Reform UK as their likely new home.

(Interesting, that. Has the dog-wagging tail of the Tory Party been a single-issue group all along?)

On Twitter, the outrage has been palpable:

It seems veteran broadcaster Alastair Stewart is right – Tory Party members can think for themselves – although that thinking seems to extend only as far as the nearest Brexiteering right-wing party.

That should sink both the Tories and Reform UK.

Judicial review demanded on Tory way of electing leaders

After concerns were raised about the apparent ‘open door’ policy of the Conservative Party that seems to mean foreign powers could influence who becomes our prime minister if the choice goes to party members, an application for a judicial review has been launched.

As it happens, the current leadership contest may not go to an election by members, so for now the question may be academic.

But that doesn’t mean Tory rules don’t need to be tightened – and the best time is always now.

Here are the details:

“We registered Archie, our pet tortoise, as a member; a couple of foreign nationals; then Margaret Roberts, the maiden name of the late Lady Thatcher. The Conservative Party took the £25 membership fee. We got membership numbers and were invited to hustings.”

Damning.

Let’s hope the courts allow the judicial review.

We should look forward to learning the result.

Boris Johnson drops out of Tory leadership contest – have there been shenanigans?

Boris Johnson: he’s out of the Tory leadership contest.

Does this count as the first time multiple philanderer Boris Johnson has ever withdrawn from anything?

And he doesn’t even have a good reason!

He has pulled out of the Conservative Party leadership election, despite claiming to have 102 nominations, which puts him beyond the number needed (although the BBC had been keeping its own count – and believed he had only 55).

According to the BBC, he has said:

“In the last few days I have been overwhelmed by the number of people who suggested that I should once again contest the Conservative Party leadership, both among the public and among friends and colleagues in Parliament.

“I have been attracted because I led our party into a massive election victory less than three years ago – and I believe I am therefore uniquely placed to avert a general election now.

“A general election would be a further disastrous distraction just when the Government must focus on the economic pressures faced by families across the country.

“I believe I am well placed to deliver a Conservative victory in 2024 – and tonight I can confirm that I have cleared the very high hurdle of 102 nominations, including a proposer and a seconder, and I could put my nomination in tomorrow.”

“There is a very good chance that I would be successful in the election with Conservative Party members – and that I could indeed be back in Downing Street on Friday.

“But in the course of the last days I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do. You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.

“And though I have reached out to both Rishi (Sunak) and Penny (Mordaunt) – because I hoped that we could come together in the national interest – we have sadly not been able to work out a way of doing this.

“Therefore I am afraid the best thing is that I do not allow my nomination to go forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds.

“I believe I have much to offer but I am afraid that this is simply not the right time.”

Do you believe any of that?

I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do“?

When was Boris Johnson ever interested in the right thing to do?

Perhaps the next line provides more light:

You can’t govern effectively unless you have a united party in parliament.”

I don’t know what you think, but doesn’t it seem as though someone has had a word?

It ties in with what Russ Jones was telling us a few days ago – that the Conservative Party is a coalition of several warring factions, and leaders have only managed to succeed by uniting several of them behind their banner.

And it could also be an excuse.

It has also been suggested that, while Johnson would be an extremely popular choice among Conservative members, he would be electorally catastrophic for the party with most voters unwilling to forgive and forget the transgressions of his original period as prime minister – irrespective of whether MPs would unite behind him.

Also, with his withdrawal, does this leave the way clear for a Rishi Sunak coronation – as Penny Mordaunt has too few nominations to pass the threshold for participation?

Could one possibly argue that Johnson was brought in simply to take votes away from any other serious candidate, to ensure they could not progress through the process and, thereby, to deprive Conservative Party members of their democratic choice?

That would be a blow for the party faithful – especially as Johnson was their preferred choice. If he really does think he might “deliver” a Tory victory in 2024, he might have scuppered his own chances by betraying his home constituency.

So, what’s next?

Should we look out for an announcement that Sunak will be the next Tory leader and prime minister at some time on Monday (October 24)?

Did you know: anyone from anywhere in the world can become a Tory and choose our PM?

It seems anybody, living anywhere in the world, can become a Conservative Party member and choose our new prime minister – if they pay a low membership fee.

This means, as George Monbiot suggests, that a foreign state could set up thousands of memberships in order to meddle with the result.

Is this open invitation for foreign governments to mess with our politics a form of treason?

Are Tories so desperate they’re looking to corrupt crooked clown Boris Johnson for salvation?

Boris Johnson: here he is pictured as millions see him in the UK and across the world.

This morning I woke up to find this stuff all over my Twitter feed:

What a lot of rubbish!

Boris Johnson was a corrupt crook who partied when there was work to be done and let the country down shockingly. He appointed deeply questionable people into positions of power and it was one of those appointments that finally brought him down. He belongs nowhere near the corridors of power.

Furthermore, he is the subject of an investigation that could lead to his expulsion from Parliament. This Writer mentioned yesterday that it would hardly be a good look for the Tory Party if its latest choice of prime minister is booted out for previous misdemeanours.

And the backlash has been strong:

Look at some of the replies to the tweets above:

That’s about the size of it – right?

Johnson is reportedly returning to the UK from the Caribbean holiday mentioned above:

The video commentators are all over this, their words running from ridicule…

… to reasoned analysis…

… to the deranged:

Meanwhile, there’s a moderate groundswell for This Site’s predicted winner, Rishi Sunak:

… and a moderate groundswell against him:

Some people are even getting behind “nasty” Penny Mordaunt, who turned many against her by denying that Liz Truss was “hiding under a table”:

None of them do!

Commentators are calling the new Tory leadership campaign a return to the “Boris Johnson psychodrama” – and that is a problem in itself.

If he campaigns to be leader again, the UK will be sucked back into the vortex of his lies, corruption and incompetence. We’ll have another two years of misery while he raves it up at the public expense.

That in itself should be reason for him to be rejected.

Does Therese Coffey really know nothing – apart from how to take donor cash?

Therese Coffey: not the best person to ask for a crackdown on smoking?

Therese Coffey proved her worthlessness as deputy prime minister in an interview with Kay Burley of Sky News.

Asked if the government was abandoning its target for building affordable homes, she said she didn’t know anything about it.

Burley then reminded her that, as deputy PM, she should:

Meanwhile, the Guardian has claimed that Coffey, as Health Secretary, is ending plans for a campaign to crack down on smoking.

Could this be because she herself smokes and has accepted hospitality from the tobacco industry?

Tories think they don’t need to tell us how to save on energy – and the reason is DAFT!

Victoria Prentis: the minister for disabled people, work and health doesn’t think the government should run an information campaign telling people how to save money on their heating bills because there will be enough gas and electricity to provide the service. What good will that do if people can’t afford it?

Victoria Prentis is minister of state for disabled people, work and health – but she doesn’t seem to have much of a grip on her job.

Check out this clip from her interview with Kay Burley of Sky News:

“Some people can’t afford to put [the heating] on in the first place.” Damn straight.

And Prentis should know this. It’s her job.

Heating isn’t necessarily going to be affordable because of the government’s energy bill cap – because it only caps the unit price of energy, not the entire bill.

This means people cannot be sure they will only be expected to pay the capped price of £2,500 per year (£2,100 after the £400 subsidy the government is providing direct to householders – and yes, I know there are other amounts going to people with disabilities and pensioners).

Simply put: it is not a question of whether the gas or electricity is available to be used; the question is whether we can all afford to use it.

And there’s more. Here’s Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis, also criticising the government’s decision not to run an energy-saving campaign:

So Prentis wants the government to spend more money than it needs to, subsidising energy firms.

That is insane. But it’s the Liz Truss Tory government through and through.
