Tory lies: car industry issues were due to Brexit, not the war in Ukraine

Kemi Badenoch: another Tory parrot, uttering whatever tripe she’s told to regurgitate at us?

Take a look at this video clip of Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch saying concerns faced by car makers were due to the war in Ukraine, not Brexit – coupled with a more recent news report saying the exact opposite:

The best we can say about this is that at least the lies are being debunked faster.

In fact, this one was debunked in the press as soon as it was uttered. The Guardian explained [boldings mine]:

She said:

“The issue that the automotive industries are talking about is around rules of origin. This is something that the EU are also worried about because the costs of the components have risen.

“This isn’t to do with Brexit, this is to do with supply chain issues following the pandemic and the war in Russia and Ukraine.

“I actually have had meetings with my EU trade counterpart, we are discussing these things and looking at how we can review them, especially as the TCA [trade and cooperation agreement – the UK’s Brexit deal with the EU] will be coming into review soon.”

The “rules of origin” requirements raised by car manufacturers are part of the TCA, and are therefore definitely related to Brexit. But Badenoch is right in the sense that all European car manufacturers are having problems because there is not enough battery supply in Europe, making them reliant on imports from Asia.

And wrong in the sense that there is no information here that links a car battery shortage with Ukraine. Any shortages in minerals that are used in these batteries may be overcome by obtaining them elsewhere.

The question now is: did Badenoch know she was not telling the truth, or was she just another Tory parrot, squawking out the words she had been told to say?

If so, who is telling Tory ministers to utter such tripe?

Keir Starmer comes unstuck over Corbyn, his five missions, and his 10 pledges

Is Labour leader Keir Starmer really up to the job?

At the moment, he’s coming across as a shifty liar who doesn’t stand for anything and simply wants power for its own sake.

His latest pose is to say he was never on good terms with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who he supported as a prospective future UK prime minister in two general elections.

real friend of Mr Corbyn – Diane Abbott – has corrected the record on that for him:

We have video clips of Starmer saying Mr Corbyn would be a great prime minister. I know it’s not the same as saying he was a personal friend, but the support – at the time – was clear, and it makes Starmer’s current volte face all the more telling.

Starmer’s big announcement last week was his ‘Five Missions’ for the Labour Party to restore the UK’s floundering fortunes – but he struggled to put meat on their bones at interview. For example:

Worse than that was a nearly 15-minute interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme in which the interviewer – was it that notorious Tory Nick Robinson? – tore him to shreds.

It is a long-ish listen but well worth the time, and I’ve put it on YouTube:

Perhaps the lack of substance is best clarified in the following tweet from Clare Hepworth, whose observations are always well worth noting:

Yeah, he was criticised on Today for using a lot of jargon in his ‘Five Missions’ documentation too. Can’t this guy make himself clear?

And if he can’t – or won’t… is this really the man we want leading the UK after the next election – even if we know Rishi Sunak can’t be allowed to stay?

Police who stop-searched UK athletes could lose their jobs

Remember when Metropolitan Police officers dragged UK sprinter Bianca Williams and her partner out of their car and away from their three-month-old child on false claims that they could smell cannabis?

Nearly two years after the incident, five officers involved will face gross misconduct charges that could lead to them being sacked. Another officer will face a charge of misconduct.

It is understood that a disciplinary panel will also consider whether racial discrimination played any part in the actions of some of the officers, who deny wrongdoing and insist they will contest the charges.

This Site reported on the incident when it happened.

Ms Williams and her partner Ricardo Dos Santos were stopped at 1.20pm on July 4, 2020 in Maida Vale, north-west London, by officers from the Met’s Territorial Support Group. He was driving and she was in the back with their child.

Reports of a police statement at the time claimed,

The Met said the vehicle had blacked-out windows and was “driving suspiciously”, including being on the wrong side of the road. It said when officers indicated for it to stop, the car sped off. Officers caught up with the vehicle when it stopped on Lanhill Road, but the driver initially refused to get out of the car, the Met said.

The occupants, a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, were detained for the purposes of a search under section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, the statement continued. After nothing was found on their person or in the vehicle, no arrests were made and the pair were released.

It was also alleged that the officers justified their search by claiming they could smell cannabis.

Both athletes are trained by the former Olympic champion Linford Christie, who accused police of institutional racism, and they also said they believed racism played a part in the incident.

In a statement, Christie asked,

“Can Cressida Dick [then Met Police Commissioner, who spoke in support of her officers’ behaviour] or anyone please explain to me what justification the Met Police officers had in assaulting the driver, taking a mother away from her baby all without one piece of PPE and then calling the sniffer dog unit to check the car over?

“Was it the car that was suspicious or the black family in it which led to such a violent confrontation and finally an accusation of the car smelling of weed but refusing to do a roadside drug test?

“This is not the first time this has happened (second time in two months) and I’m sure it won’t be the last but this type of abuse of power and institutionalised racism cannot be justified or normalised any long #BLM #MetPoliceRacist.”

A few days later, the Met referred the incident to the Independent Office of Police Conduct, which has taken two years to deliver its findings.

This Writer’s personal opinion is that I would want access to every piece of evidence used in the case, when the disciplinary panel comes to hear it, because I simply don’t trust the institutions involved to make a correct decision without public supervision.

I have grave doubts about the reasons the Met gave to justify chasing, stopping and searching these athletes’ car, and there is also the matter of the distress caused to them as they were separated from their very young child.

The IOPC’s recommendation is a step in the right direction. But will it be a case of one step forward, two steps back?

Tory MP Jamie Wallis comes out as first trans MP after blackmail and rape ordeal

Trauma: Jamie Wallis.

Welsh Tory MP Jamie Wallis has become the UK’s first member of parliament to come out publicly as transgender, releasing a statement in which they discussed the traumas of being blackmailed – and raped.

In a statement released yesterday (March 30), they said:

“I’m trans. Or to be more accurate, I want to be. I’ve been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and I’ve felt this way since I was a very young child. I had no intention of ever sharing this with you. I always imagined I would leave politics well before I ever said this out loud.

“There was a close call in April 2020 when someone blackmailed me, outed me to my father and sent photographs to other family members. He wanted £50,000 to keep quiet.

“The police were so supportive, so understanding and on this occasion the system worked. He pled guilty and was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.

“A few months back, in September, I ‘hooked up’ with someone who I met online and when I chose to say ‘no’ on the basis that he wouldn’t wear a condom he chose to rape me. I have not been myself since this incident and I don’t think I will ever recover. It is not something you ever forget, and it is not something you ever move on from.

“Since then things have really taken a tumble. I am not ok.

“When I crashed my car on November 28 I fled the scene. I did so because I was terrified. I have PTSD and I honestly have no idea what I was doing except I was overcome by an overwhelming sense of fear. I am sorry that it appears I ‘ran away’ but this isn’t how it happened in the moment.”

He concluded: “I have never lived my truth and I’m not sure how. Perhaps it starts with telling everyone.”

Perhaps it does.

Anyone will be aware that as far as This Writer is concerned, politically, modern Conservatives are lower than vermin.

But everybody should be allowed to live their life in the manner that best suits them, as long as it does not harm anybody else.

The ordeals that Jamie Wallis described in their statement should not happen to anybody. They have had justice over the blackmail and I hope they can get some form of justice for the rape in the future (alleged rape, I should say – until it is proved).

The mental distress these – and the burden of hiding their nature – caused Wallis won’t justify them running away from the scene of a car crash, although it may mitigate it slightly.

Let’s hope this will translate into increased sympathy for constituents in difficult and traumatic situations in future. If that happens, Wallis will gain a huge amount of stature above the vast majority of his colleagues.

Free parking for hospital staff to end as Javid piles insult onto the injury of NHS pay

NHS staff, already insulted by derisory pay rises inflicted on them by the Tory government, are being told they’ll have to find the cash to pay for their parking places again from Friday.*

And the cost is likely to be anything up to three times what they were paying before, because of a Tory manifesto promise from 2019.

The government pledged in their December 2019 election manifesto to provide free parking for some patients and staff on their night shifts.

We know the move has prompted at least one privately run car parking company to pass on the cost to daytime NHS workers.

At the time, I questioned why hospital car parks are run for profit by private companies in the first place. Our health care is supposed to be free at the point of use so I asked, is our useless Tory government getting around that by charging us all to get there?

The question was rhetorical; the short answer is yes.

But neither Sajid Javid nor Boris Johnson, the apparent architect of the policy, appear to have thought it through.

With hospital car park firms passing their losses from free parking on to those who still have to pay, it will soon cost staff too much to work there. Or is that the plan?

*That’s if they work in England, of course. Those of us in Wales (for example) get free hospital parking because healthcare here is considered to be a service to the public, not an opportunity to fleece us.

#CarCrash: culture secretary’s TV interview is comedy of awkwardness

Who’s the most confused? Charlie Stayt, who can’t get a straight answer, or Nadine Dorries – in her natural state?

Nadine Dorries epitomises the Tory dilemma: Boris Johnson proved himself incapable of leading, but all his lieutenants are daft. Who could possibly replace him?

The Culture Secretary, who’s determined to destroy the BBC, was interviewed on that broadcaster’s Breakfast show today (February 5), when presenter Charlie Stayt found her inability to answer basic questions about her boss confusing:

What an awkward interview.

It really does offer validity to a comment on Twitter: “Perhaps No 10 and Parliament does need drug testing after all.”

Johnson’s ‘Peppa Pig’ meltdown? Don’t be daft – he was just distracting us from his NHS carve-up

Boris Johnson and Peppa Pig: no, she’s not his new anti-corruption minister but if he’d thought of it, he would probably have announced it, to create a bigger distraction from his NHS privatisation Bill.

Everyone’s talking about it so it achieved exactly what Boris Johnson intended.

I refer, of course, to this:

Worse was to follow. He performed a “vroom vroom” impression of an accelerating car, and went onto a lengthy tangent about visiting Peppa Pig World: “I loved it, it’s very much my kind of place.

“It has very safe streets, discipline in schools, heavy emphasis on new mass transit systems I notice, even if they are a bit stereotypical about Daddy Pig.

“But the real lesson for me, going to Peppa Pig world, I’m surprised you haven’t been there, was about the power of UK creativity.”

As a result, instead of reporting on a lengthy debate in Parliament on the future of the National Health Service as provided in England, the UK’s news shows were doing… well, this:

And that was all Johnson wanted.

He knows the Health and Care Bill is an absolute stinker – for all the reasons This Site has mentioned before.

He also knows he’s unlikely to have much difficulty getting it approved in the House of Commons because Keir Starmer’s Labour “Opposition” is as keen on the privatisation it proposes as he is; all they’re planning are a few amendments – tinkering around the edges.

But he’s also aware that some of us know exactly what’s going on, and have been spreading the word for all we’re worth.

He didn’t want us to get our argument across on-air, so he scrabbled for a way to lock us out.

We see him.

Nobody should be surprised at this – for a very good reason:

No, they’re not ridiculing us now. They’re not reporting on NHS privatisation at all.

They’re reporting on Peppa Pig and “vroom vroom” noises.

And while his successor and his cronies talk ineffectively about proposed amendments to the Bill, the greatest prime minister we never had is still telling us what we need to know:

Sadly, when everybody else is screaming nonsense, the only reasonable voice in the room won’t be heard.

Why were these pro-Palestine protesters hit by driver?

Two sides of the same coin? The hit-and-harm attack on pro-Palestine protesters happened around the same time the occupants of these cars were (allegedly) spreading anti-Semitic propaganda around a predominantly Jewish London neighbourhood.

At first, I was going to say this was the flipside of the anti-Semitic behaviour we’ve seen in the UK since Israel started its latest military purge of the population of Palestine.

But that would be simplifying matters.

The incident, resulting in the arrest of one man who apparently drove his car through a crowd of pro-Palestine protesters in Nottingham, could have other causes.

Perhaps the alleged perpetrator had a grudge against the victim(s) and merely used the pro-Palestine protest as cover.

Perhaps the injured person wasn’t the intended target at all.

It will be educational to find out, if a trial results from this arrest.

My bet is on it being the work of a pro-Israel nutcase, though. Occam’s Razor – the most obvious alternative is probably right.

Car manufacturing jobs planned for Brexiteering Bridgend will now go to France

Jim Ratcliffe: the people of Bridgend would probably like to see the Ineos boss jump head-first off that parapet.

Another Brexiteering boss shafts the working people of Britain.

A majority of people in Bridgend voted for Brexit back in the 2016 referendum – possibly on the recommendations of people like Ineos boss Jim Ratcliffe (himself a Brexiter).

Ineos promised to manufacture a new 4×4 vehicle in Bridgend, as a successor to the Land Rover Discovery. Production was due to begin in 2021.

Except it turns out that Ratcliffe has now had a better offer from Europe and the car will now be built at the former Mercedes-Benz Hambach factory in Moselle, France.

Ratcliffe rubbed salt into the wounds with his comment on the new deal:

“Hambach presented us with a unique opportunity that we simply could not ignore: to buy a modern automotive manufacturing facility with a world-class workforce.”

He’s saying that facilities at Bridgend aren’t modern and the workforce is second-rate. What a charmer.

Perhaps we should have seen this coming, considering what Jacob Rees-Mogg said about Ineos on the BBC’s Question Time, and what actually happened:

Apparently Dominic Raab is a friend of Ratcliffe. Do you think he’ll ever respond to this query?

And what about the people of Bridgend? Hoodwinked, used, and cast aside, what comfort can they take from this?

Very cold comfort indeed.

Why are parking fees TRIPLING for hospital staff after Johnson promised to end them for everyone?

Where’s the warning that parking charges are enormous?

The price of working for the NHS is astronomical as it is – and now it seems it is rising again, in spite of a promise by prime muppet Boris Johnson.

The issue here is car parking. Boris promised to eliminate parking fees for everybody attending hospital – which includes staff.

But now we have reports that the price of staff parking at King’s College Hospital in London is tripling.

New permits will cost doctors and nurses at the trust up to £1,440, with the changes reportedly taking effect from the beginning of December.

Let’s remind ourselves of Johnson’s promise:

It seems the government pledged in their December 2019 election manifesto to provide free parking for some patients and staff on their night shifts.

In the email from the Kings College Trust to staff, the hospital’s management claim the move has prompted privately run car parking companies to pass on the cost to daytime NHS workers.

This prompts the obvious question: why are hospital car parks run for profit by private companies in the first place? Our health care is supposed to be free at the point of use so is our useless Tory government getting around that by charging us all to get there?

The question is rhetorical; the short answer is yes:

And it turns out Johnson was lying to Parliament when he made that promise:

In an exchange in the House of Commons in July, Labour leader Keir Starmer urged the prime minister to keep free parking – but Johnson refused to rule out bringing charges back in for hospital staff.

He told Starmer: “May I suggest he takes his latest bandwagon and parks it somewhere else.”

Johnson added: “The hospital car parks are free for NHS staff during the pandemic, and we are going to get on with our manifesto commitment to make them free for patients who need them as well.”

Clearly the prime muppet hasn’t thought this through. With hospital car park firms passing their losses from free parking on to those who still have to pay, it will soon cost staff too much to work there.

Richard Burgon, former shadow justice secretary when Jeremy Corbyn led the Labour Party, has called on the Tory government to put a stop to the price rise:

It seems unlikely Johnson will take any notice.

Public opposition to hospital car parking charges is widespread:

The subject was buried over the weekend, beneath the Downing Street soap opera about Dominic Cummings quitting and Boris Johnson self-isolating.

But honestly, who cares about those things? They don’t affect us. Cummings will be replaced by somebody just as bad at the job and Johnson can use Zoom.
