Look at the diseases in the US food your Tory government wants you to eat

Yummy yummy diseases for your tummy: a chlorinated, antibiotic-fed chicken. It may well be full of salmonella, e.coli and excrement but your Tory government will be demanding that you eat it if it signs a trade deal with the United States.

Channel 4’s Dispatches has highlighted the danger into which Boris Johnson’s Tory government will force us, if it is allowed to make a trade deal that will kill UK farming and force us to eat chlorinated chicken and other diseased foods from the United States.

This Site told you on Tuesday (October 13) that the government has rejected calls to enshrine high food standards in law, saying it is enough that Tory ministers have said they will demand such standards in any trade negotiations with foreign nations.

These are the same Tory ministers who supported Johnson’s EU Withdrawal Agreement to the hilt in January, and now say that it is no good and they support breaking international law – turning the UK into a criminal state – instead, so their word is worth less than nothing; it is a promise of betrayal.

Dispatches has shown us what it will mean if we allow food into the UK from the United States:

Yes, you heard it correctly: the Americans would sell us meat that has animal excrement in it.

And yes: the diseases carried in this US meat would cause serious problems to people with long-term ill-health, meaning the Tories would be creating another opportunity to quietly kill off many thousands more people with long-term illnesses and disabilities and wipe them from the benefits bill.

Apparently somebody spoke up on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, demanding that the Tory government legislate for higher food standards.

But I fear this Twitter user has drawn the right conclusion:

That is my feeling, too: Boris Johnson’s loyalty lies with the US rather than with us.

Brexit: Your Tory MPs have betrayed UK agriculture after promising not to

Chicken: if this one was of the US chlorine-washed variety, do you think Boris Johnson would be soiling his hands with it?

We knew that Tory promises were no good, didn’t we? So we did 14 million people vote for them last December?

I’ve never found an answer for that one.

The usual old chestnut that “the other side were worse” is plainly wrong. Labour’s offer – and leader – was a vast improvement on Johnson and his rabble, as anybody can see.

They can certainly see it now, anyway.

Today’s scandal is that Brexit will now cause a flood of cheap food imports into the UK that will destroy our farming industry and poison our people.

Tories: you voted for this. Brexiters: you voted for this. Indeed, many farmers voted for this.

Here’s what they promised:

But (as Si Anderson puts it in earthy terms above), yesterday evening’s (October 12) vote in Parliament ensures that the Tories will be able to compromise those protections, just to get a deal with the United States:

Farmers and food campaigners were defeated on Monday night in their attempts to enshrine high food safety and animal welfare practices in British law.

Several prominent backbench Tory MPs rebelled against the government to vote for amendments to the agriculture bill that would have given legal status to the standards, but the rebels were too few to overcome the government’s 80-seat majority and the key amendment fell by 332 votes to 279 after an often impassioned debate.

The government argued that giving current standards legal status was unnecessary as ministers had already committed to ensuring that UK food standards would be kept in any post-Brexit trade agreements.

However, critics fear that the lack of a legally binding commitment in the agriculture bill will allow future imports of sub-standard food that will undercut British produce and expose consumers to risk.

Be honest; given Johnson’s record of u-turning on his promises, this means chlorinated chicken for dinner. It will be cheap at the shop, but it will cost us our entire agriculture industry.

And that is what Boris Johnson intended from the start – before the 2016 referendum, even – it seems.

Here’s what we’ll be getting:

Boris Johnson and his cronies won’t be getting chlorine-washed chicken, of course – they’ll be able to afford the higher-quality meats. But you will be in danger.

Opponents of Brexit have taken the opportunity to remind us all of Boris Johnson’s words in 2016 – so we can remind him at the appropriate time…

… not that it will make a difference. He does what he likes. You voted for that, Tories. You voted for it, Brexiters.

Here’s how it’s panning out:

Just to rub salt into the wound, it seems support for remaining in the EU is rocketing, with 57 per cent of the nation now in favour of it.

What a shame. After three years of fighting over it (up to the election in 2019), that debate is over. The Brexiters got what they wanted and you have been shafted. Nobody currently in power will do anything to reverse the decision.

Still, there remain a few optimists who think there will be recourse to law if harm can be shown as a result of this decision:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Tory ministers are above the law.

The police and CPS actively avoid investigating any allegations of crime or wrongdoing by our elected government.

And Dominic Cummings could go on a murder spree in Barnard Castle and he would still walk free at the end of it.

But you can bet that a lot more people will suffer because of last night’s decision by Parliament to poison our farming industry, and our people.

Lords defeat Johnson over food standards because they don’t want chlorinated chicken

Chicken: if this one was of the US chlorine-washed variety, do you think Boris Johnson would be soiling his hands with it?

Boris Johnson’s hopes of a trade deal with the United States are looking increasingly like a house of straw… built on sand.

Already leading figures in Congress have said they will block a trade deal if Johnson pushes his Internal Markets Bill into UK law, as it would break international law and – particularly – threaten the peace in Northern Ireland.

(Did Johnson really dream up this Bill because his Russian donors demanded it?)

Now the House of Lords has amended his Agriculture Bill, so that food products imported under any future trade deals must meet or exceed current standards in the UK – to prevent farmers in this country from being undermined.

For the opposition, Lord Grantchester warned: “Low-quality food cannot be allowed to jeopardise rural communities by undercutting UK farmers with products using methods that would be illegal here.”

Consumers did not want chlorinated chicken or hormone-treated beef to be imported from the US, he said.

It was only by supporting the Labour-led move that peers could be sure the Government was “bound to its commitment not to import food of lower standards than our own domestic products”, Lord Krebs said.

Baroness Boycott, a crossbench peer, said chlorinated chicken was the “tip of the iceberg” of “bad food” which could come into the country.

The amendment is a rejection of the Tory government’s claims, as summarised by Baroness Noakes:

“The government’s policy is clear. They are committed to higher food and welfare standards.

“We do not need to write into law what the Government is committed to.”

Clearly the majority of the Lords disagree – and who can blame them?

The whole point of not writing such a commitment into legislation is to ensure that a government can U-turn on it, once it has been enacted, and we all know it. That’s why the amendment has been brought in.

Unfortunately, it is well within Boris Johnson’s power to throw out the Lords’ amendment, so that the eventual law will undermine UK farmers, and will allow diseased meat onto our plates.

It is possible that MPs will stop and think for a moment before blithely voting it away, though; debate in the House of Lords is of a higher standard than that in the Commons and their reasons for changing a Bill deserve careful consideration.

Many Tories represent rural constituencies full of farmers.

How will those people take it if one of the earliest actions of these MPs in the new Parliament is to stab their voters in the back?

Supine Sunak set to axe ‘Facebook tax’ because he’s scared of big, nasty Donald Trump

Rishi Sunak: ‘Please don’t force us to eat your diseased chicken, Mr Trump! Look – we’ll cancel our tax on your tech companies! They can take as much money as they like from operating in our country and we won’t ask for a penny! Will that persuade you, Mr Trump? Mr Trump? Are you there..?’

Could there be a more blatant display of the UK’s newfound powerLESSness in the world?

The UK imposed a tax on tech companies like Facebook last year, expecting to bring in £500 million per year from firms that make more than £25 million each and would otherwise pay very little indeed.

But now Rishi Sunak is reportedly planning to axe it, in the hope that doing so will encourage Donald Trump not to insist on sending chlorinated chicken to the UK.

Sunak doesn’t even have the bargaining power to say he’ll do it on condition that Trump relents on his determination to foist food poisoning on the United Kingdom.

The justification to the rest of us? “Oh, it’s more trouble than it’s worth.”

I don’t know about that. £500 million is a lot of money to most of us.

The whole situation is pathetic.

The Johnson government, in the footsteps of Theresa May and David Cameron, has reduced Britain from Greatness to a state that can only be described as Little.

Chlorinated chicken is back on the Tory menu – they have lied AGAIN

Remember when Theresa Villiers made this promise, back in January?

Boris Johnson has just turned her into a liar:

According to the Telegraph:

Britain is prepared to permit imports of chlorinated chicken from the US but will slap high tariffs on cheaply-produced food in order to minimise the impact on British farmers.

The latest Government proposal for a trade deal with the US is for a “dual tariff” regime that imposes different levels of duty on imported foods, depending on whether they comply with UK animal welfare standards.

Hormone-fed beef, chlorinated chicken and other foods that use techniques banned in Britain will be allowed across the Atlantic, but ministers want to use tariffs to make it uneconomical for US producers to export them to the UK.

It’s a classic Tory tactic.

Faced with public opposition to a plan, they say they absolutely will not allow it – not now, not ever, our laws forbid it.

Then they wait a while, before saying: “Oh, we’re going to allow it but with severe restrictions.”

Then when the change comes into effect, they quietly ensure that no restrictions are imposed.

Bear in mind that 14.7 per cent of US citizens suffer from a food-borne illness each year, compared with just 1.5 per cent of UK citizens. Watch the UK percentage skyrocket after this change is imposed.

Today’s announcement means you will be asked to eat chicken and beef that does not meet UK food standards – effectively poisoning yourself so fat Tory businesspeople can have a cosy trade deal with the United States that the majority of people in the UK don’t want. And they won’t be chomping on chlorinated crap!

Tory indecision over chlorinated chicken creates a nugget of joy for Labour

Chicken: if this one was of the US chlorine-washed variety, do you think Boris Johnson would be soiling his hands with it?

It’s hardly encouraging when your government can’t make up its mind over a hefty chunk of a planned trade deal.

Former Tory Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers said the UK would not buy chlorinated chicken from the United States as part of any trade deal, as it would run contrary to EU rules that have now been absorbed into the UK’s legal framework.

But new Environment Secretary George Eustace, challenged over this by Andrew Marr, said – well, see for yourself:

Labour took advantage of the confusion at once:

British farmers pride themselves on high levels of animal welfare and environmental protections. So why won’t Ministers put into law a ban on any post-Brexit trade deal food imports from the US that are produced to lower welfare and environmental standards?

Chlorinated chicken being sold in Britain is a genuine risk, unless this backdoor to lower standard US goods imports is closed and a ban is put into law. It’s not just Labour saying this, there is a chorus of voices from the NFU to the RSPCA and who all want legal guarantees British farm standards won’t be undercut.

The Canary has suggested the Tories’ unclear position may be the thin end of a trading wedge, leading to possible sales of anything including the NHS – and we’ve already seen that a deal to upgrade Trident nuclear weapons seems already to have been agreed, without being put before Parliament.

Concerned citizens must remain vigilant. If the Tories try to sell us out, we need to create an outcry.

Normalising nastiness: US ambassador calls for acceptance of chlorine-washed chicken

Chicken: if this one was of the US chlorine-washed variety, do you think Boris Johnson would be soiling his hands with it?

It doesn’t matter what Theresa Villiers says; people in the UK are being told chlorine-washed chicken is “delicious” in a bid to brainwash us into accepting the substandard fare post-Brexit.

Ms Villiers, the Environment Secretary, has said chlorine-washed chicken would not be allowed into the UK as part of a prospective trade deal with the United States.

But in a letter The Sunday Times seemed happy to publish, US ambassador Woody Johnson (yes, that’s his real name and I wonder if he realises its euphemistic significance) demanded that chlorine-washed chicken should remain on the table during talks (I know; that’s hardly hygienic).

He claimed chlorine washes are “the most effective and economical way to fight food-borne illness” – but that’s not the point.

The issue is not only about making sure the meat is free of germs that could have attached themselves to it after slaughter; it’s about American-raised chickens being kept in such poor conditions that they are riddled with disease.

We would be eating diseased meat. At least, that’s the implication.

And there’s another question: if this spokesman for US chicken really did care about food standards, why not advocate that American producers raise theirs to the UK level? Why must we always accept the lowest standards available?

The trouble is that, by maintaining it as an issue – possibly one that could stop a trade deal, and by pushing it to an impressionable public as a viable alternative, the ambassador is normalising it; making it acceptable.

What does it say about our government that it even entertains such notions?

Boris Johnson’s Luxembourg nightmare: And he had the nerve to call Corbyn chicken!

Appropriate response: Jeremy Corbyn’s imagined response by Frank Roby on Facebook.

Boris Johnson chickened out of a press conference with Luxembourg’s PM Xavier Bettel because a crowd of protesters were too loud for him – so M. Bettel held it anyway, and let rip at BoJob.

This man – Mr Johnson – holds the highest office in the UK and is our most senior representative abroad, and foreign leaders are treating him like a fool. I hope nobody has forgotten the way Leo Varadkar treated him last week.

This cannot be allowed to continue for long, because the UK’s standing in the world is getting trashed. But there is a strong vein of schadenfreude in seeing this fool treated as what he is; the UK’s Tory-loving mainstream media do their best to shield him from ridicule here.

That said, I really like this account from The Guardian:

That was extraordinary. Boris Johnson, the British prime minister, has just been humiliated by the leader of almost the smallest country in the European Union.

We were expecting a joint, open-air press conference but, with a large crowd of anti-Brexit campaigners threatening to drown out Johnson, it was announced that the British PM was not going to take part (presumably because of the demonstration, although that has not officially been confirmed yet). Normally in these circumstances the polite thing to do is to rearrange. But instead Xavier Bettel, the prime minister of Luxembourg, went ahead anyway, effectively “empty chairing” his guest. At one point he even gestured at the space where Johnson was supposed to be.

Then Bettel just let rip. People often wonder what EU leaders say or think about Johnson in private. Well, now we know. The leave campaign was a pack of lies, Johnson’s talk of progress in the Brexit negotiations is unfounded, the UK still has not come up with any ideas about an alternative to the backstop. On and on he went, with particular emphasis on the point that the UK, not the EU, was to blame for the crisis. It was a “nightmare” for EU citizens, said Bettel. At several points he was loudly applauded by the protesters, because they felt he was articulating their anger.

Yesterday, Johnson depicted himself as the Incredible Hulk. As the Telegraph’s Michael Deacon suggests, the reality could not be more different.

Only last week, Mr Johnson was calling Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn a chicken – and falling fowl of KFC for it.

Now BoJob has been caught out in what appears to be a genuine act of cowardice, so it seems he’s the chicken!

In fact, I am probably within the realm of decency in this case to say: He’s a cock.

Tory ‘chicken’ image breaks Facebook rules. Where’s the slapdown?

An insulting visual comparison between Jeremy Corbyn and a chicken has not only led to the Conservative Party being “owned” by Kentucky Fried Chicken – it broke Facebook rules when the party posted it there.

Read the following, from a post on the Political Provocateur Plus Facebook page:

They demand their rights, and in that right is the desire to post images of Mr Corbyn in a chicken suit which they super imposed to create a meme, and in doing that they couldn’t even tag it to say it was fake or spoof which Full Fact all but demands. The failure to provide this ‘description’ is against FB Policy, which is:

”Policy (rule 2)

“Pages, groups and events must not impersonate or falsely represent a brand, entity or public figure. Where a Page, group or event is being used to express support for or interest in a brand, entity or public figure, it must make clear in the name or description that it is not an official representation.”

Effectively, the Conservative party have gone against FB regulations.

What are FULL FACT and FULL FACT NI going to do about it?

”Inaccurately tagged content – (Rule 4)

“Pages, groups and events must not inaccurately tag content or encourage users to inaccurately tag content.”

Government pushed through legislation that sought to regulate social media. It wasn’t the Labour Party, or the Green Party for example….And now they are getting away with posting content that goes against the very regulations that they helped create, it’s absolute hypocrisy.

Clearly this is one rule for them, and another for everyone else.

This Writer understands that the organisation that checks Facebook for this kind of thing, Full Fact, and was set up by a Conservative Party donor.

The organisation was labelled “Faux Fact” in 2012 after being found to be misleading and showing “aggressive bias”.

Will it find against the Conservative Party for this apparently flagrant breach of Facebook rules?

‘Imagine being so **** at politics you get owned by Kentucky Fried Chicken’

The Conservatives, desperate to shame Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn into supporting Boris Johnson’s bid for a general election, have been bandying “chicken” imagery around – but they bit off more than they could chew when they tried to include a major US fast food franchise.

The practice of calling somebody “chicken” to imply they’re frightened is well-established – although it is usually employed by children or people of childish nature to shame somebody of otherwise far better wisdom into doing something that is extremely ill-advised.

In this instance, Mr Corbyn knows it isn’t in anybody’s best interest to allow Boris Johnson to have the general election he wants.

Mr Johnson demanded that Parliament be suspended for five weeks, right before the deadline for the UK to leave the European Union, because he wanted to ensure that MPs could not mount any democratic opposition to his plan for the UK to leave without a withdrawal agreement – a “no deal” Brexit.

But MPs managed to foil his plan by passing a law preventing the UK from leaving the EU without an agreement.

This means Mr Johnson has tied his own hands by ensuring that Parliament can’t sit.

So he thought he’d have a general election to give him a mandate to change the situation – again – to his own design.

The problem was that the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, passed by Mr Johnson’s fellow Tories – and the Liberal Democrats – in 2010, requires a motion for a ‘snap’ election to be supported by two-thirds of MPs – 434 of them.

That can’t happen if Labour MPs, led by Mr Corbyn, don’t vote for it. And they’re not voting for it because it would be insane to offer Boris Johnson a way out of a corner into which he has painted himself.

So the Tories have nothing left but insulting imagery – like this, which appealed to the fast-food franchise Kentucky Fried Chicken:

Unfortunately the tweet backfired badly. Perhaps it was unwise to suggest the makers of a famous chicken-based take-away were “chicken”?

Whatever the reason, KFC bit back:

Whoever wrote that line is a genius as it not only ridicules the Tories but also the right-wing talk-radio channel LBC, that predominantly promotes the Tory viewpoint.

It put the Tories in their place – as at least one commenter pointed out:

And it ensured that the Conservative Party was left with egg all over its collective face.
