Jared O’Mara: RIGHT-wing Labour’s candidate who went off the rails?

Jared O’Mara (centre): he was allegedly selected by right-wing Labour factionalists who didn’t check his credentials properly.

The former MP who replaced Nick Clegg as MP for Sheffield Hallam has been in the news again after being jailed for faking invoices to Parliament to fund a cocaine habit.

But did you know that Jared O’Mara may have only become a candidate because a right-wing Labour general secretary didn’t bother to check up on him before he was selected to run for the seat?

The show’s presenter, Crispin Flintoff provided a preview of the situation on Facebook:

“Labour’s General Secretary in 2017, Iain McNicol, was responsible for the selection of Jared O’Mara. He decided that candidates shouldn’t be scrutinised in ‘unwinnable’ seats and Jared was selected because the Blairite-dominated panel thought O’Mara wasn’t a Jeremy Corbyn supporter.

“Such was their factionalism that when Jared declared himself a Jeremy Corbyn supporter, they withdrew funds for his campaign. But he still won.

“I’ve got the inside story of this on Sunday morning’s ‘Not the Andrew Marr Show’. It includes insights from Martin Mayer (formerly on the NEC), Tina Werkmann and Lee Rock (both of Sheffield Hallam Labour Party at the time) and Tosh McDonald (former Aslef official who showed Jared support).

“I hope that people can watch this and see that Streeting is ridiculously factional and economical with the truth (just as he is with the NHS).”

It seems this is another situation in which right-wing Labour sabotaged its own party – first by assuming Sheffield Hallam couldn’t be won and allow an inappropriate candidate to stand there, and then by disowning him and stressing his association with Jeremy Corbyn to bring the then-Labour leader into disrepute.

And these people are now in charge of Labour once again.

But I don’t have all the information – I have to wait until Sunday, just the same as you.

We all knew about Sajid Javid’s racism – this is more, SHOCKING, proof

It seems there are no racist depths to which Sajid Javid will not stoop.

We have already discussed his racism on This Site, here…

And here.

Now, Mr Javid has hit a new low. Read:

“These sick Asian paedophiles are finally facing justice. I want to commend the bravery of the victims. For too long, they were ignored. Not on my watch. There will be no no-go areas.”

He was responding to a BBC news report on the jailing of a paedophile ring in Huddersfield. It states:

“Twenty men have been found guilty of being part of a grooming gang that raped and abused girls as young as 11 in Huddersfield.

“The men were convicted of more than 120 offences against 15 girls.

“Victims were plied with drink and drugs and then “used and abused at will” in a seven-year “campaign of rape and abuse” between 2004 and 2011.

“At Leeds Crown Court, the ringleader, Amere Singh Dhaliwal, 35, was jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years.

“Other members of the gang were jailed for between five and 18 years but the court heard many perpetrators have never been identified.

“Details of the men’s convictions and sentences can only now be published after reporting restrictions on a series of trials were partially lifted.

“During the three trials, jurors heard how the men – who are all British Asians mainly of Pakistani heritage – preyed on young, vulnerable girls, one of whom was described as having the mental age of a seven-year-old.”

Maybe you think he hasn’t said anything wrong. The paedophiles concerned were Asian – in fact, they were of Pakistani descent, as is Mr Javid. But that’s not the point.

The point is that his words potentially endanger the innocent by stirring up hatred on the grounds of race.

So now it is not only racism but hypocrisy. Mr Javid was happy to accuse Jeremy Corbyn of anti-Semitism (falsely – Zionism is a political doctrine, not a race or ethnicity), and is happy to endanger Asians himself.

On the subject of the far-right and sexual abuse, Saboteur Aesop makes the big point:

So Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson) nearly caused the collapse of the Hudderfield paedophile case with live-streamed reports claiming to expose the crimes (but actually in danger of prejudicing justice), after making a speech about Muslims and “jihad rape gangs”.

And there is a disproportionate number of recent cases of child sexual abuse and grooming by men in the far-right. I can’t pin this on Mr Yaxley-Lennon because I don’t have any evidence, but there’s no better way to divert suspicion of a crime from oneself than accusing others of it.

And that’s exactly what racist Sajid Javid did when he attacked Jeremy Corbyn over his use of the word “Zionists”. Did he really think we would not recognise his attempt at deflection?

Tory MSP’s aide sacked after sex attack conviction. What does that say about the Conservatives?

This won’t play well for the Conservatives – perhaps unfairly.

The story suggests that a man facing trial for carrying out a sex attack thought that the Conservative Party would be glad to give him a job.

It casts the Tories’ recent attempts to de-toxify themselves into question, after the series of sex scandals that rocked the party last year.

But here’s the thing: We’re told the Tories acted immediately after they found out about the trial – suspending him until after the verdict was known, and dismissing him after he was found guilty.

Considering the fact that the man in question did not divulge details of his trial when he applied to work for the Tories, one wonders what more they could have done.

But the fact still remains: A sex attacker thought the Conservative Party would employ him. What does that say about the Tories?

The Scottish Conservatives’ justice spokesman has sacked an aide after he was convicted of carrying out a sex attack.

Greg Jamieson, of Dundee, was found guilty of touching a work colleague’s breasts whilst he was previously employed as a police officer.

Shadow justice secretary Liam Kerr sacked Jamieson following his conviction, after the 33-year old initially hid details about his upcoming trial from the party.

The Corbyn Phenomenon – Mainly Macro

Jeremy Corbyn's detractors need to start accepting that they are on the wrong side of the argument; Labour's membership wants a party of conviction - not one that goes any way they wind blows.

Jeremy Corbyn’s detractors need to start accepting that they are on the wrong side of the argument; Labour’s membership wants a party of conviction – not one that goes any way they wind blows.

Detractors of Jeremy Corbyn are pushing hard to discredit him any way they can – see yesterday’s article on Alastair Campbell for an example. But the arguments put forward by these critics lack depth.

In his latest article, Professor Simon Wren-Lewis has been exploring whether the Corbyn phenomenon also lacks depth or if there is indeed something to it. It is perceptive in that it examines the issues rather than the personalities, and exposes weaknesses that we all knew existed in Labour policy – but that some of us choose not to acknowledge.

Well, it’s time to acknowledge them! This is only an excerpt from the article and you are heartily advised to visit Mainly Macro for the rest of it.

Whether Corbyn wins or loses, Labour MPs and associated politicos have to recognise that his popularity is not the result of entryism, or some strange flight of fancy by Labour’s quarter of a million plus members, but a consequence of the political strategy and style that lost the 2015 election. They should reflect that if they are so sure they know what will win elections, how come they failed to predict the Corbyn phenomenon. A large proportion of the membership believe that Labour will not win again by accepting the current political narrative on austerity or immigration or welfare or inequality and offering only marginal changes to current government policy. On economic policy in particular they need to offer reasons for voters to believe that there are alternatives to the current status quo of poor quality jobs, deteriorating public services and infrastructure, and growing poverty alongside gross inequality at the top. That means, whether he wins or loses, working with the Corbyn phenomenon rather than dismissing it.

It is nonsense to suggest that the Labour party membership has suddenly become markedly more left wing than it used to be. Corbyn’s popularity has much more to do with how the party in parliament has responded to both election defeats.

The reaction of most of the parliamentary party to the 2015 defeat seems to be that the pre-2015 strategy was right in principle but had just not focused enough in placating the marginal English voter, which they believe means more appeasement and shifting further to the right. The party membership seems to have reacted very differently to the 2015 defeat. The membership appears to believe that the pre-2015 strategy has clearly failed, and it is time to start talking with conviction about the issues you believe in. This is exactly what Jeremy Corbyn does: he is a conviction politician, who is not prepared to try and be someone else to win votes.

If Labour is to have any hope in 2020 it has to start attacking Osborne’s unnecessary and obsessive austerity, as well as getting the past history straight. There are also reasons for thinking that the power of deficit fetishism for voters will steadily decline. In that sense, on this issue and perhaps others, Corbyn seems to have an advantage.

Thurrock UKIP councillor Robert Ray suspended from party

Here’s a bit of comedy while we wait for David Mitchell’s comments on tax avoidance to be uploaded to YouTube by the team at The Last Leg. According to the BBC:

A UKIP councillor who asked police “Do you know who I am?”, when he was arrested for drink driving has been suspended.

Robert Ray, 65, admitted drinking and driving after a party function at Orsett Hall Hotel, Essex, last June.

At Basildon Magistrates’ Court last week, he was banned from driving for 19 months and fined a total of £1,160.

UKIP has confirmed the Thurrock councillor had been “suspended from party activity”.

The court was told when Ray spoke to officers, he asked them: “Do you know who I am? I am a prominent councillor, I know the police commissioner.”

The UKIP comedy parade rolls on.
