Nurses to strike on December 15 and 20 after the government TURNED DOWN talks

A nurse: I’ve said this before and it still rings true – doesn’t this person deserve fair pay, after working to keep us all safe from Covid-19 for the last six months – and facing what could be a much worse period in the immediate future?

Nurses across the UK will strike on December 15 and 20, after the government refused to take part in negotiations over pay and conditions.

Patricia Marquis of the Royal College of Nursing England, said Health Secretary Steve Barclay was “not willing” to talk about what needs to be discussed – pay and safe staffing.

Here’s the gist from Good Morning Britain:

This may strike you all as a naive take on the situation, but here it is:

We know that governments spend whatever they want to meet their goals every year – they create the money to do it.

We also know that taxation takes money out of the system in order to counter inflation. This can be done to correct inequalities in society, if the government of the day is minded to do so.

UK society is currently unequal on a shocking scale; millions of people are in poverty, relying on food banks (including nurses), while a relative few millionaires and billionaires are profiting hugely from the overbalanced system that Tories like Steve Barclay have created for them.

The solution is clear: tax the super-rich, then the country will be able to afford to pay nurses their due.

The added bonus of this, of course, is that the money will go to people on the bottom tier of society and will go through many pairs of hands before it is taxed back out, creating a huge boost to the economy. Money that goes to billionaires gets banked in the Cayman Islands (for example) and is no use to the economy at all.

Barclay is misleading us when he says that the country “can’t afford” to pay nurses properly. He simply doesn’t want to.

Worse still, he and his cronies – both within the government and outside – will whine that the strikes will disrupt a health service that is already at breaking point. But it was the choice of his government to push the NHS into that situation, with under-funding, privatisation and poor staffing.

Here’s the proof – a Sky News report emphasising that “patients will suffer” (watch until the focus shifts to wider strike action, around the five-minute point on the clip, which is quite long):

Possibly one good argument to use against Barclay is simply to ask how far his own pay has risen since 2010 – and how many lives he has saved during that time.

Labour has surged in the opinion polls – but there’s only one poll that counts

This is great news – exuberantly delivered by ‘Chunky’ Mark McGowan:

Here’s the evidence:

Great news, right?

Well, yes – because the pollster is a right-wing organisation that plays down the Labour vote as much as possible. The number of people actually coming out for Labour is probably much higher.

But there’s only one poll that counts – and it will be held between 7am and 10pm on Thursday, December 12.

Don’t be lulled into thinking that Labour is catching up, so you don’t have to vote. That’s a sure route to another Conservative government.

Don’t expect anybody else to do the right thing for you.

Vote Labour on Thursday if you want a Labour government.

As Mr McGowan says:

“Vote as if you life depends on it” – because it probably will.

Be ready to vote in December – the general election is on!

Jeremy Corbyn has ended Labour’s opposition to a general election in December after receiving confirmation that a “no deal” Brexit is well and truly out of the question until at least January 31.

The Labour leader said he had received the European Union’s confirmation that the UK’s membership of the EU has been extended up to January 31.

In a statement, he said: “We will now launch the most ambitious and radical campaign for real change our country has ever seen.”

The precise date of the poll has yet to be agreed at the time of writing.

Mainstream media Tories are saying this will be letting Boris Johnson have his way; it isn’t.

Mr Johnson wanted to dictate the UK’s departure from the European Union at the end of October – preferably without a withdrawal agreement, so he could end any human rights and workers’ rights that his backers find inconvenient, end environmental protections for the same reason, and turn the UK into a tax haven on the edge of mainland Europe.

In short, Mr Johnson wants to turn this “green and pleasant land” into a slag heap.

He did not want an election – especially after failing to leave the EU on October 31, “do or die”. He said he would rather be “dead in a ditch” than fail to leave on that date, and fellow Conservatives have made it clear that they believe their party’s electoral chances will be dead in a ditch with him, after such a failure.

And it is merely his last in a series of failures.

They are correct, in This Writer’s opinion.

The Conservative Party is riven with arguments over what kind of Brexit should happen and whether it should happen at all. Two successive Tory governments – under Theresa May and Boris Johnson – have failed to deliver it to the nation.

Boris Johnson’s only success as prime minister will be calling an election that will give the people a chance to get rid of him.

The opportunity for the Labour Party is enormous.

It should be widely-known that Labour’s policy position has the support of a huge majority of UK voters.

This may be one reason other parties have concentrated on attempts to blacken the Labour leader’s name. But these accusations against Jeremy Corbyn are likely to face away in an election period as laws on impartial reporting clamp down on them.

While the other parties may continue to focus on Brexit, Labour has a chance to demonstrate how the Tories’ handling of the issue – along with its paralysis over all others – has already harmed our prosperity.

Labour will have a platform to show how its policies will restore that prosperity, and how its approach to Brexit will take account of the needs of the vast majority of the population, rather than just 52 per cent of those who voted in the EU referendum.

Bring it on.
