Riley’s lawyers attack Mike’s crowdfunding site

Before anyone comments, I know that UK courts don’t use the gavel. This is for illustrative purposes.

What are they afraid of?

Well, there’s a simple answer to that: Rachel Riley’s legal team knows that a judge’s decision to strike out my defence against her libel claims is not safe and wants to ensure that I don’t have the financial ability to challenge it.

Initially, according to my own solicitor (I don’t have any direct contact), Patron Law took a very strong line that many of the assertions in my updates on CrowdJustice had been proved to be defamatory by Mrs Justice Collins Rice’s judgment of January 20 and that my fundraising web pages should be taken down completely.

That has now been moderated. The firm now says it has written to CrowdJustice asking only for defamatory comments and updates to be removed. But Patron Law has not provided any information on what its members believe those comments and updates to be.

The demand would only be reasonable if I were not appealing against the judgment – and we all know that I am.

Already I have looked at the judgment in relation to the evidence I provided and have identified significant issues, in terms of both fact and law, where her judgment may be challenged. So my representatives will definitely be lodging an appeal.

This makes it entirely possible for the judgment to be cancelled (annulled?) and for my defence to be reinstated. If that happens, then it would be premature to remove any of the information from the CrowdJustice site.

I have to take a balanced view of this and have said to CrowdJustice that it is right to abide by the law and I will remove any words that offend against it at the appropriate time. Now is not the appropriate time.

Meanwhile – here’s the good news: since I made my desperate appeal for more funding, you have donated more than £9,000 to the CrowdJustice site – or to me personally. That’s in just three days! And most of it came in on the first day – around £7-8,000.

Because of this, I reached 90 per cent of my stated target and CrowdJustice asked me if I wanted to extend it. Considering the new financial demands – the appeal, costs of continuing the case in the High Court, the possibility of having to pay the costs of Riley’s application – I have raised it to £200,000.

I consider this to be a monstrous amount to have to pay for justice.

It really reinforces what I have said all along – that this case is not about the facts. It is an attempt to hijack the justice system and use it to bully somebody with fewer funds out of what little they have.

That is deplorable in itself.

The attempt to stop me from crowdfunding makes it very much worse.

My appeal is continuing and it is possible to contribute in these ways:

Consider making a donation yourself, if you can afford it, via the CrowdJustice page.

Email your friends, asking them to pledge to the CrowdJustice site.

Post a link to Facebook, asking readers to pledge.

On Twitter, tweet in support, quoting the address of the appeal.

You have given a lot in the last few days. Most significantly, you have given me hope.

There is more to do, though.

Let’s keep going. We can win.

Have YOU donated to my crowdfunding appeal, raising funds to fight false libel claims by TV celebrities who should know better? These court cases cost a lot of money so every penny will help ensure that wealth doesn’t beat justice.

Braverman’s disgrace is Johnson’s shame: attorney-general defends law-breaking with nationalistic nonsense

Suella Braverman: her latest appearance in the Commons made her look like a child showing off in front of her elders.

Suella Braverman has once again provided ample evidence to support her removal from the post of Attorney-General.

See if you can watch her ridiculous response to Labour’s shadow solicitor general Ellie Reeves without feeling the bile rise:

All Ms Reeves did was to ask what Braverman had done to defend the rule of law, considering that the Johnson government intends to break it – at an international level – with its Internal Markets Bill.

So why did Braverman start her answer by accusing Reeves of being “emotional”? Was she just throwing a dead cat on the table at the start, because she knew she didn’t have anything to say for herself?

Braverman went on to say that the Bill “protects our country and it safeguards the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”, which is saying the same thing twice without explaining why.

Then she appealed to patriotism – the refuge of the jingoistic airhead. There is nothing patriotic about breaking the law. Quite the opposite, in fact.

“How can she call herself an MP,” demanded Braverman, “and at the same time vote against a Bill that defends the unity of our country…”

It doesn’t.

“… maintains peace in Northern Ireland…”

It won’t.

“… and enables the United Kingdom… to thrive.”

It can’t.

The breach of international law means other countries will not trust the UK and will not want to do business here. Already the US Congress has indicated that it will not support a free trade agreement with the UK if the Internal Markets Bill is approved.

And the body language defies belief. Methinks the lady doth protest too much, as Shakespeare once wrote.

Reeves’s response was restrained, under the circumstances.

Others have been less so:

The SNP’s justice spokesperson went further than Ellie Reeves – he called for Braverman’s resignation over the plan to breach international law.

In response, she actually said it was lawful to break the law. See for yourself:

It isn’t.

It might be possible to do it – to pass a law that makes a breach of international law inevitable – but that doesn’t mean that it is permissible to do so.

Stuart C McDonald is therefore entirely correct: Braverman should resign.

She won’t – but she should. The fact that she is in that post at all is a shows Boris Johnson’s contempt for the law.

Six days left! Pledge your support for Mike’s libel defence fund now!

Thanks to everyone who donated in the last 24 hours – we are now more than £400 closer to our goal!

I still have not heard anything from solicitors representing the complainants. I consider this to be a good thing,

But as I stated yesterday, it is entirely possible that they are waiting to see if I manage to raise a significant amount – so let’s raise the largest amount possible!

Many of you will know what follows. It is the only way I know to make this appeal succeed.

If you haven’t done so already, please email five of your friends, asking them to pledge to this case.

You could also post a link to Facebook, asking your friends to pledge. The address is https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/mike-sivier-libel-fight/

If you’re on Twitter, you could tweet in support, quoting the address of the appeal.

Please donate.

If you hear Tories saying they are defenders of women, watch this

This is the way the Conservative Party likes to use women.

The following video should be self-explanatory, on the day a Conservative MP hypocritically calls for an urgent debate about the behaviour of a member of the Opposition:

What the Trump? US president defends Nazis and white supremacists

“Trump and Theresa new best friends,” tweeted Diane Abbott a few months ago. “Be afraid world. Be very afraid.”

This Writer is going to keep a decent stockpile of photographs showing Theresa May holding Donald Trump’s hand, because after this week, that’s all we’ll need to defeat the Conservatives in a UK general election.

It took Mr Trump – who is, let’s remember, the President of the United States and leader of the so-called “free world” – 60 hours to denounce the nazis and white supremacists who caused havoc, injury and death at a demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia at the weekend.

Then he held a press conference and said this:

So he has rowed back on everything he said before and is now defending the indefensible with a claim that the people protesting against their violence, bigotry and hatred were also to blame.

How do we feel about that, Twitter?

Here’s a good exchange:

https://twitter.com/marthasydenham/status/897557529701613570

And what about Trump’s claim that there were “fine people” on both sides?

I’m with Gorgeous George on this. Moving on:

Ah, but they’re not Nazis in today’s politically-correct world. They’re the “alt-right”. What do we think about that?

That’s already happened, in fact:

https://twitter.com/CarlBeijer/status/897554684277252096

Trump in fact equated the “bad” right-wingers with the “violent” left (and who says they were left-wing, anyway? You don’t have to be a socialist to hate nazi-saluting morons).

Here’s the reception he got:

More incisive, perhaps, are the following, which cut to the heart of the matter with satire.

https://twitter.com/theyearofelan/status/897618856084205568

In fairness, Trump did receive some praise for the new position he has taken. It came from the Ku Klux Klan:

Here’s the connection with Theresa May:

Last word goes to Rav Danya Ruttenberg, for obvious reasons, considering this:

In fact, congregants at the Charlottesville synagogue were put in fear for their safety by people apparently wearing the uniform of a white supremacist group.

There is strong language in this final tweet so those of you who don’t like that sort of thing might want to stop reading now.

I wait with baited breath for Trump’s abject apology to his country’s Jewish community.

All of the above may mask a deeply unpleasant truth, though – which is that the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave is increasingly becoming the very enemy it defeated in 1945.

Ethnic minorities – including Jews – are being persecuted.

And the political leader of the country is speaking up for the aggressors.

We know where this ends, if it is allowed to continue.

Let’s put a stop to it right now.

America, the world is waiting for you to do what must be done.
