NHS doctor & campaigner demolishes Keir Starmer’s public/private NHS partnership

Dr Bob Gill is a leading campaigner for the restoration of the National Health Service to its former position as an entirely publicly-owned organisation serving the health of the people of the UK and not the profits of a few corporate shareholders.

On Not The Andrew Marr Show, he destroyed Keir Starmer’s claim that a future Labour government would be dedicated to “improving the NHS” by expanding private sector involvement in it.

“If Starmer was a doctor, he fails to examine the patient, fails to come up with an accurate diagnosis, but has a prescription for a medicine which is going to kill the patient,” he said.

“Where is this idle workforce in the private sector that is going to help us? Why is it necessary that we have to use private sector capacity?

“Starmer, New Labour and the Tories have all engineered a collapse of NHS services so they can present the private sector as coming to our rescue.

“The solution Starmer is prescribing for us is the same old New Labour pro-privatisation nonsense.”

He said: “Public-private partnership is a mechanism to conceal corruption… Money we pay in taxes is being siphoned off for other uses – for corporate profit, for shareholders.

“Starmer and Wes Streeting have indicated time and time again that they have no desire to restore the NHS.

“The prescription he should be writing for the NHS is a re-nationalisation Bill… That is definitely not what a Starmer-led Labour Party is going to deliver.”

He challenged our friends in the mainstream news media to get Starmer to name a single public/private partnership that has not enriched the shareholders and CEOs of the private company.

“Public/private partnership is a con trick,” he warned.

Keir Starmer comes unstuck over Corbyn, his five missions, and his 10 pledges

Is Labour leader Keir Starmer really up to the job?

At the moment, he’s coming across as a shifty liar who doesn’t stand for anything and simply wants power for its own sake.

His latest pose is to say he was never on good terms with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who he supported as a prospective future UK prime minister in two general elections.

real friend of Mr Corbyn – Diane Abbott – has corrected the record on that for him:

We have video clips of Starmer saying Mr Corbyn would be a great prime minister. I know it’s not the same as saying he was a personal friend, but the support – at the time – was clear, and it makes Starmer’s current volte face all the more telling.

Starmer’s big announcement last week was his ‘Five Missions’ for the Labour Party to restore the UK’s floundering fortunes – but he struggled to put meat on their bones at interview. For example:

Worse than that was a nearly 15-minute interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme in which the interviewer – was it that notorious Tory Nick Robinson? – tore him to shreds.

It is a long-ish listen but well worth the time, and I’ve put it on YouTube:

Perhaps the lack of substance is best clarified in the following tweet from Clare Hepworth, whose observations are always well worth noting:

Yeah, he was criticised on Today for using a lot of jargon in his ‘Five Missions’ documentation too. Can’t this guy make himself clear?

And if he can’t – or won’t… is this really the man we want leading the UK after the next election – even if we know Rishi Sunak can’t be allowed to stay?

Labour now has Five Missions – to replace Starmer’s 10 Pledges that he betrayed?

Keir Starmer has revealed what he describes as Labour’s “Five Missions for a Better Britain” – as foreshadowed by Rishi Sunak (!) in Prime Minister’s Questions.

We’ll come back to Sunak shortly, but first: should we trust Starmer to take these “missions” – whatever they are – forward to a general election?

No.

Of course not.

This is a man who stood for the Labour leadership on 10 “pledges” – all of which he has since betrayed.

The only way we can expect him to honour this latest relaunch in any way is if the promises it contains are so loosely-worded, he can make them seem to mean anything.

So let’s hear what he has to say:

So he reckons he’ll make the UK the best-performing economy in the G7; restore the NHS to greatness; crack down on crime; break down barriers to opportunity; and turn the UK into a “clean energy superpower”.

I think he’d fall at the first hurdle. With sub-Tory economic ideas and an adherence to Brexit, restoring the UK’s economy will be an impossible task.

We already know he’s planning to privatise more of the NHS in an utter betrayal of Labour’s greatest achievement.

Need I go on?

His full speech is here, if you can stomach it:

But let’s get back to Rishi Sunak.

I reckon he made the best comment on Starmer’s “missions” – before even hearing what they were. It’s the last item on his list in this clip:

Sunak’s Tories are no better, of course. Labour is only high in the polls at the moment because the Conservatives have repeatedly self-harmed over 13 years of administrative incompetence.

With crud like this leading our two most popular political organisations, how is the UK ever going to climb out of the hole they have dug for us?
