British Palestinian activist to challenge Israel apologist Wes Streeting for Ilford North

The candidate: Leanne Mohamad, a Palestinian activist, is hoping to unseat Labour Friend of Israel Wes Streeting at the next general election.

This is an electoral battle we can all enjoy!

Labour Friends of Israel member Wes Streeting is being challenged for his Ilford North Parliamentary seat by a Palestinian activist named Leanne Mohamad.

It means that, at the next general election, voters in that constituency will have to decide not only whether they support the policies of the candidates but whether they can support candidates who themselves support Israel’s genocide in Gaza, or a candidate who wants the killing to end.

Buy Cruel Britannia in print here. Buy the Cruel Britannia ebook here. Or just click on the image!

Wes Streeting’s majority in Ilford North is 5,218. That was before he started spouting pro-Israel claptrap while the Israeli government and military were committing genocide.

Who knows what he’ll get this year?

One thing is for sure: the British people are well up for it.

Damien Willey – Cornish Damo – tweeted: “Epic result. What better opponent could the awful Israel apologist Wes Streeting have, than a Palestinian opponent standing as an Independent for Ilford North.”

This Writer is with Damo and the others mentioned above; I hope Ms Mohamad wins.

Who wouldn’t?

Isn’t it time for an investigation into Tory donors that get huge government contracts?

Backhander: have the Tories been funnelling public money to their friends and donors in return for practically nothing? And if so, shouldn’t these people face justice?

Take a look at this:

The claims in the image appear to be accurate.

This is just one of many accounts showing that Tory friends and donors have benefited from government contracts.

The latest apparent beneficiary is Akshata Murty, the wife of the prime minister himself – Rishi Sunak.

Yet all these financial arrangements go uninvestigated.

Personally, I think retweeting the message above might not be enough to achieve the necessary.

By all means do, but consider contacting your own MP as well, to express your own desire for an investigation into connections between Tory MPs and party or personal donors who receive large business contracts – especially deals that, for one reason or another – fall through.

Such bad deals endanger lives – as we discovered during the Covid crisis, when huge amounts of duff personal protective equipment were bought by the Tories from donors and friends, when reliable gear could have been purchased from reputable sources – that didn’t have friends in the Tory government.

It is in the national interest for us to find out for sure what has been going on.

Is this the new wheeze for friends of the Tories: subsidies for asylum-seeker hotels?

Channel migrants: it seems the Tories have found a way to help their friends make a profit from the presence of these vulnerable people.

It’s not so long since we discovered the Tory government was giving contracts to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to their friends via an illegal ‘VIP lane’ – now it turns out they are paying their buddies to run hotels housing asylum-seekers.

Apparently the BBC has been told the government is using 395 hotels to accommodate more than 51,000 people, at a cost of £6 million per day.

Hotel owners are being approached to hand over their properties to outsourced companies, which run the businesses on behalf of the Home Office.

The BBC’s report names the outsourced companies as Serco, Mears Group and Calder Conferences, all of which are enjoying increased profits as a result.

Here’s a bit of info on Serco:

But what about this snippet from the social media?

Here’s more evidence:

Sadly, that’s only a little to go on.

But it should be enough to support a demand for the facts from the Tories.

Who is running the hotels that are benefiting from this public money? Are they Conservatives or supporters of Conservatives? Who is responsible for selecting them?

Has someone set up another ‘VIP lane’ for applications?

BBC documentary asks: Who cashed in on Covid?

Don’t expect too much from this: it’s a Panorama documentary from the BBC and, judging by Is Labour Antisemitic that was produced under the same banner, is likely to be biased towards the Tories and full of falsehoods.

However, even the fact that an attempt is being made to bring this to public attention means it has to be worth watching. Right?

According to the BBC’s publicity,

As the government faces mounting criticism that well-connected people made millions out of Britain’s PPE crisis, Panorama investigates who won out.

More than £12 billion was spent in the first six months of the pandemic on contracts to provide personal protective equipment.

Reporter Richard Bilton meets one man who made £40 million on a deal and speaks to others who felt ignored in favour of less-experienced suppliers.

As the government refuses to reveal the full details of all its so-called VIP deals, the programme reveals the high-profile connections to one lucrative contract.

Wow – £40 million on a single deal.

I suspect the conclusion will be one we know already: success depends not on what you know, but who; the Old School Tie opens doors that would otherwise be closed.

Panorama: Cashing in on Covid is broadcast on BBC1 tonight (March 15) at 7.35pm GMT. It will be on BBC iPlayer soon afterwards.

The Tory gravy train is rolling on with new contracts awarded to party chums

  Spot-on satire from @dayvidart.

There’s a weird kind of communism going on in the Conservative Party during these times of Covid-related hardship.

Members of the Tory government have closed ranks and are working together to ensure that public money is handed out only to organisations and individuals who have close ties with their organisation.

They don’t care that we have noticed. This Site has published several articles pointing out that the Tories have used the emergency system for procuring government services to bypass proper tendering procedures and hand money straight to Tory donors and Cabinet ministers’ spoilt chums –

It has been dubbed “the Chumocracy” –

and I’m not alone. But still they continue:

No wonder satire sites like the brilliant @dayvidart are suggesting that they might branch out beyond Covid-19 procurement.

The image at the top of this article suggests a lucrative new income stream in environmentally-harmful pesticides that kill pollinating insects like bees and poison the ecosystem by getting into the water supply.

Who can deny that the scene it depicts may have happened, considering what we all know about the Conservatives, their government and the so-called prime minister at its head?

Dido Harding’s evidence to MPs shows why Tories shouldn’t give jobs to their cronies

The head of Serco – not NHS – Test and Trace demonstrated the failures, not only of her fake Covid-19 response organisation, but of the system that allows Conservative ministers to appoint their buddies to important jobs – just by turning up to talk about it.

Dido Harding – whose qualifications to run a business charged with contact tracing people who may have Covid-19 include having been a jockey and failing to run a telecoms/internet supplier – duly made a fool of herself before a joint meeting of Parliament’s health and social care committee and science and technology committee.

This Writer didn’t see the session so I’m relying on information from Twitter sources – and it isn’t flattering:

It’s a good point to make because the private firms do not come up to the standard of service we expect from the NHS – and that the NHS would provide.

So now we see not only that private companies are being paid a hell of a lot of money to provide very little, but also that the public authorities that have had to take up the slack and actually do something are not receiving any of this funding to do it. What a bare-faced charlatan Ms Harding was showing herself to be.

Worse was to follow:

The conclusion? Some commenters resorted to satire:

But many drew the obvious conclusion – as epitomised here:

That’s right – and Boris Johnson, together with his colleagues in the Conservative government that he heads, is responsible for employing them, using a system that bypasses competitive tendering by claiming it’s an emergency and time is of the essence.

It is now a year since Boris Johnson was first made aware of Covid-19. He wasted four months pretending it wasn’t any reason for concern and then used that system to appoint personal friends of his who achieved nothing.

It’s time the madness was stopped and competitive tendering was reintroduced so we can clear out the cowboys and bring back the professionals.

And it’s time Johnson and his cronies were brought to book for their cavalier spaffing of our cash on know-nothing amateurs.

Strangely enough, it seems that’s exactly what is going to happen…

Spendthrift Tories have spaffed £500 MILLION on firms run by their friends – that do NOTHING

‘Spaffer’: Boris Johnson is throwing money the UK doesn’t have at his mates’ companies. What will you do when he tells you to pay off the debt?

In a week when we learned the Tories have more than doubled the national debt to £2 trillion, a mere £500 million might not seem much.

It’s around 1/200th, or half a per cent, of the total they’ve borrowed since 2010.

But this is money they have spent in the last six months alone – on contracts with companies run by their personal friends… that have apparently done nothing useful in return.

According to the Labour Party, 13 firms run by friends of Tory ministers have won contracts related to Covid-19, without having to go through a competitive tendering process.

Here’s what they’ve done with the money:

One firm, Randox, received £133million for Covid testing.

It pays Tory MP and former Cabinet minister Owen Paterson £8,333 a month as an adviser.

Earlier this month, 750,000 unused Randox testing kits were recalled over safety concerns.

How about the Serco ‘test and trace’ fiasco?

Serco is paid £108million for running the national contact-tracing service and nearly £46million by the DWP to run call centres.

Health minister Edward Argar was a senior executive and boss Rupert Soames is brother of former Tory MP Sir Nicholas Soames.

In November 2019, Rupert Soames’ wife Camilla donated £4,995 to the Tory Party.

Here are the other firms mentioned in the Mirror article:

PricewaterhouseCoopers, which won seven contracts, hired Theresa May’s former top aide Gavin Barwell as a strategic adviser in January.

He is also a non-executive adviser at Arcadis – which was given a £1.5million consultancy contract with the Ministry of Justice in April.

Public First Ltd gets £840,000 to run focus groups for No10. It is owned by James Frayne, who started the New Frontiers think tank in 2003 with Dominic Cummings.

Dragontown Ltd was awarded a contract worth £675,000 to supply PPE to London’s Guys’ and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Lady Xuelin Bates, a director of this firm, is the wife of Tory peer and former minister Lord Bates and has donated £30,000 to the Tories.

If we had anything to show for this emptying of the public purse, there might be some justification for these contracts – but we don’t.

This is nepotism intended to further enrich the undeserving while bankrupting the nation.

Expect Boris Johnson to demand that, now he and his spendthrift mates have run up a huge debt, you have to pay it off.

Here’s the real reason Chief Rabbi Mirvis attacked Jeremy Corbyn and Labour: he’s a TORY (and a racist, it seems)

Considering the furore over Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis’s attack on Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party, one would think that this was an open-and-shut case, and that all the evidence shows an honest and decent man, concerned about the safety of his people. Right?

WRONG!

Here’s the reason: Ephraim Mirvis is a dyed-in-the-wool Tory.

The text reads: “I am delighted to congratulate Boris Johnson, a longstanding friend and champion of the Jewish community, on becoming the next leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister. As he accepts upon himself the mantle of responsibility to lead our nation, may he be blessed with the wisdom to successfully navigate the political uncertainties we face and bring healing and prosperity to our great country.”

Considering the history of racism, sexism, Islamophobia and – yes – anti-Semitism that Mr Johnson and the Conservative Party trail behind them like a shroud, that is in the worst possible taste.

Not only that – he’s a firm supporter of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Israel, an apartheid state where Palestinians are persecuted:

For those who have trouble reading the text, it states: “The Rabbi, who used to live in Israel and is personal friend of both Boris Johnson as well as Netanyahu, has frequently defended Israel’s right to bomb Palestinians.” It is followed by a series of weblinks in support of the statement.

So it seems Mr Mirvis, happy to tar Labour with the anti-Semitism brush, is a racist himself.

Tory campaign of lies: candidate caught getting friend to pose as anti-Labour swing voter (VIDEO)

Buddies with BoJob: Lee Anderson (right), with a Conservative who has even more extreme views than his own.

The Conservatives have given up even trying to pretend they’re being honest in this election campaign, haven’t they?

Consider this … this … this candidate for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, Lee Anderson.

Just watch what Michael Crick caught him doing:

Some might have thought it was a step too far endorsing Mr Anderson’s proposal to send problem tenants to Labour camps.

Amazingly, that wasn’t what embarrassed the Tories.

I’m wondering whether even this blatant attempt to lie to voters is enough to invalidate Mr Anderson as a candidate, in the esteem of Conservative central HQ.

Just for the record, Ashfield has been held by Labour for a few years now. The current Labour candidate is Natalie Fleet.

If you live in that constituency, and you want an MP with an ounce of integrity, I’d strongly recommend that you vote for her.

Cox’s credibility catastrophe: TV professor’s logic fails him over ‘friends with Tories’ debate

Brian Cox: His head has been above the clouds for so long he has lost touch with what’s happening here at ground level.

I suppose it was only logical that one of the minds behind D:Ream’s Things Can Only Get Better – also known as Tony Blair’s theme song in the 1997 general election – should hold a centrist worldview that absolves Conservative MPs of guilt for their many crimes against the UK’s population.

So it should be no surprise that Professor Brian Cox would take issue with Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell’s statement that he could not be friends with a Conservative politician after the cruelty of their austerity policies over the last eight years.

Here’s what Mr McDonnell said:

To me, it seems unlikely that Professor Cox saw that clip. More plausible is that he read the LBC tweet quoted below – “After John McDonnell reveals he couldn’t be friends with a Conservative, Iain Dale asks: do you struggle being friends with someone of the opposite political persuasion?” The context – that it is a decision reached by observation of the human suffering caused by the Tories – is missing.

Still, the conclusion to which the professor is drawn seems incongruous. Here’s what he wrote:

It is a huge leap of logic to suggest that denying friendship to a politician who intentionally causes suffering is equivalent to wanting a one-party state (like the Soviet Union). It is also an example of thinking in absolutes – Mr McDonnell wasn’t saying the only good people are those who agree with him; he was saying he, personally, cannot accept that there is anything good about the suffering inflicted needlessly on innocent people by the Conservatives. Personally, I’m with him.

In the interests of fairness, it is worth reporting a YouGov poll which states that an “overwhelming majority” (of the 1,000 or so people the organisation asked) said they could be friends with someone who has a different political view.

But it doesn’t say they could be friends with a politician who had inflicted huge suffering on people they know, so is it entirely appropriate to this case?

When a person of Professor Cox’s standing makes a blunder, Twitter pays attention – and his comment attracted a wealth of stinging responses.

Was it a dogpile – an instance in which many people attack someone over a wrong or offensive post because that person is an easy target, or to gain popularity points? I don’t think so. The criticisms of Professor Cox were largely reasonable attempts to show him his error.

For example, Sarah stated: “The issue for many right now Brian is that the game has changed over last 8 yrs (& particularly th last 3) of Tory rule. While you’d be having a friendly debate with Tories about your political differences, this degradation is happening to millions.”

Consider this:

“Bootstrap Cook” Jack Monroe was a little more biting: “If you struggle to understand why that ‘opposite political persuasion’ is not a clever dinner debate but a real harmful ideology that is killing the vulnerable in society, then it seems to me that your wealth, celebrity and privilege are occupying the space your heart should be.”

And perhaps Socialist Voice can be forgiven for the implication that Professor Cox has lost his principles: “Dear Professor Brian Cox,

“Tory MPs laughed and brayed in parliament as they voted against giving nurses a pay rise. Some nurses are now using food banks.

“So, please excuse those of us who have principles and strictly refuse to collaborate with the enemy.”

The suggestion may be more understandable if taken in connection with the exchange that Another Angry Voice discusses, below. After suggesting that Mr McDonnell would deny a voice to anybody who disagreed with him, Professor Cox then did exactly that to a commenter who disagreed with him:

Perhaps, in the heat of the moment, Professor Cox failed to realise his own behaviour resembled his argument far more than Mr McDonnell’s.

At the end of the day, this contretemps won’t matter to Professor Cox. He has a large fan base that is undoubtedly very forgiving and his career won’t be harmed.

But we may hope that, next time, before he jumps to insupportable conclusions, maybe he will take the time needed to consider all the evidence.

Like a scientist.
