Russell Howard’s farewell to Boris Johnson (Something for the weekend)

Boris Johnson: was this his expression after seeing Russell Howard’s summary of his time in office?

He may be frothing at the mouth with fury at the recommendations of the Commons Privileges Committee but we can still have a laugh at Boris Johnson’s expense.

Russell Howard has offered up a compilation of the best Boris Johnson moment from his TV show, which is just the thing to brighten up a hot and humid weekend.

The chairman of NatWest understands the problems facing the UK – why can’t Rishi Sunak?

Rishi Sunak: the economy is beyond the understanding of this former Chancellor of the Exchequer, who is now the UK’s prime minister.

This Writer is guilty of terrible omissions in my political viewing habits; I keep forgetting Robert Peston’s interview show.

This week, he was talking to Howard Davies, chairman of NatWest, along with Labour’s John McDonnell and Ruth Davidson of the Conservatives, and it was Mr Davies who proved most interesting.

He laid into former PM Liz Truss, who has claimed she was brought down by a mythical “left-wing establishment”:

His words were supported by Mr McDonnell, who explained how he had planned for a future Labour government in 2017 and 2019 by liaising with the relevant economic movers and shakers in order to be sure that everybody knew what he was planning. He considered Truss’s failure to prepare as “incompetent”:

Mr Davies also described the economic levers that he believed were tipping the UK into recession – including Brexit, despite Tory claims to the contrary:

And he said although the recession was likely to be shallow, it would be hard to bring it to an end because the government has no plans to do so:

This is unsurprising. If a government refuses to accept the reasons for recession (like Brexit), then it is unlikely to be able to plan a successful way out.

But that leaves the question: if Howard Davies can recognise the problems, why can’t Rishi Sunak?

Matt Hancock comes under more mockery – from Russell Howard

Yes, we’ve had a lot of commentary about Matt Hancock going into the jungle for I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, but most of it focuses on the serious issues people have with a former government minister whose decisions harmed many thousands.

Here comes Russell Howard and – yes – there’s a fair amount of indignation here. But there’s also a huge amount of straightforward ridicule and outright hilarity:

If Liz Truss is doing u-turns, how about reversing draconian protest laws?

Russell Howard has focused on the Tory government’s crackdown on protest. Should Liz Truss u-turn on it?

Liz Truss seems to be the u-turning prime minister.

Her latest reversal is on her claim that she would not impose more austerity, voiced in Prime Minister’s Questions last Wednesday (October 12). New Chancellor Germy C- er, Jeremy Hunt went back on that one in his very first TV interview.

So here’s an idea for her: why not reverse a policy that people actually hate?

Here’s Russell Howard, talking about the Tory crackdown on protest. His point? That, if progressive change is ever to take place, the voice of the people must be hard.

And his methodology is hilarious (apologies to those who are offended for the profanity in the image):

There’s no opposing what Russell is saying here.

And Truss would certainly improve her popularity if she changed this law – which hasn’t succeeded anyway, as the clip demonstrates.

So why not do it? Or is she simply too stupid?
