Johnson’s Brexit means maggots and rat hairs in food, says Corbyn. It’s what people voted for

Jeremy Corbyn: I considered using a picture of rats or maggots but decided that would be too stomach-turning. You’ll see them soon enough if Boris Johnson has his way.

After the disaster of the general election, This Writer was keen for Labour to wash its hands of Brexit.

As far as the voting public were concerned, the Tories had won the argument and that’s why they won the election – right?

So I thought the Tories – and their voters – should take ownership of whatever follows.

Mr Corbyn hasn’t gone that far. But I still like his approach.

He used the debate on the latest version of Boris Johnson’s EU Withdrawal Bill (Johnson stripped out parts that would have protected members of the public – including those Tory voters – like the promise to continue protecting workers’ rights after the UK leaves the EU) to remind people of the consequences of their decision on December 12:

Jeremy Corbyn has warned Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal would mean maggots in paprika and rat hairs in orange juice.

The Labour leader said a post-Brexit US trade would mean signing up to lower standards as Britain runs short of bargaining chips.

Mr Corbyn said: “The choice we now face is between keeping the highest environmental and food standards in order to get a future trade deal with the European Union or slashing food standards to match those of the United States where there are so-called acceptable levels of rat hairs in paprika, maggots in orange juice.”

Well, folks, if you voted Conservative in the election, it’s what you wanted!

Did you realise it at the time?

If you didn’t vote Conservative in the election (which, considering you’re reading This Site, seems far more likely), feel free to find a Tory voter and ask them how they’re looking forward to those delicious maggots and rats.

Then tell us all what they said in response – no matter how silly.
