Rishi Sunak will be next UK prime minister – as Vox Political predicted

Rishi Sunak will be crowned as the next Conservative leader and prime minister after Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the leadership contest at the last minute – and This Site predicted it last week.

1922 Committee chairman Graham Brady said: “We have received one valid nomination. Rishi Sunak is therefore elected as leader of the Conservative Party.”

There was thunderous applause:

Chaos in the Conservative Party as candidates jostle to take part in leader race

What’s going on with the Tory leadership? Your guess is as good as mine.

Two candidates have formally declared themselves: Rishi Sunak, apparently with 139 MPs supporting him, and Penny Mordaunt with just 23 (it seems her comment about now-former PM Liz Truss not hiding under a table has done her no favours).

Boris Johnson has yet to declare himself but apparently has 56 MPs already supporting him.

And the pundits are having a field day…

Be warned – this one has STRONG LANGUAGE:

It goes on and on – and will continue to do so, at least until the leadership contest is over.

We’re supposed to form a balanced view of who should be Tory leader (and prime minister) from all this.

But we’re more likely to write off the lot of them as the maniacs they’re showing themselves to be.

Liz Truss is no longer in charge – if she ever was. But who IS?

Liz Truss: she was expected to be a puppet of the right-wing Tufton Street think tanks, but with her policies destroyed, that’s gone. Who does she represent now? And how long will it be until they get rid of her?

It’s very hard to sum up the situation concisely but I’ve found a few videos to help out.

The situation seems clear: Liz Truss’s entire policy position has been dismantled in a day. She has no more influence on politics in the United Kingdom. Jeremy Hunt has been appointed to make the hard decisions. But is he in charge now? Or is someone else?

Here’s Phil Moorhouse:

So Hunt has very little influence but no obvious candidate to take over after he has done the dirty work seems to present itself. Strings are being pulled from the shadows and we don’t know who’s doing the pulling.

Perhaps we’ll find out eventually.

In the meantime, what will happen to Truss?

Here’s the situation right now, according to Sky News:

What does that mean? That she’s safe for the moment because nobody can be found to replace her?

Here’s Professor Tim Wilson:

He thinks Truss has been told to stay put while the grown-ups make the hard decisions. She’ll be pensioned off after being in post for 60 days – is that her pay-off?

Hunt can’t replace her and even the idea that he is prime minister in all but name is an illusion. Penny Mordaunt can’t because she came across as “nasty” in answering the UQ on Monday (October 17).

Rishi Sunak is silent so Prof Wilson expects him to turn up as part of whatever replaces Truss.

Whatever happens, one thing is certain – it won’t have anything to do with the will of the UK electorate.

In the Mother of all Parliaments, democracy is well and truly dead.

Tories line up to challenge Liz Truss over benefits and inflation

Robert Halfon: He’s supporting benefit uprating in line with inflation.

After Penny Mordaunt told Liz Truss she should honour a promise to uprate social security benefits in line with inflation, other Tories are lining up to support her.

Here’s Robert Halfon, saying Truss should not effectively cut benefits in order to pay for her tax cuts for the very rich:

If you didn’t catch what Mordaunt said, it was in an interview with Times Radio, which you can see here:

This Writer has tweeted on the subject (of course):

Truss challenged: will she link benefits to inflation or punish the poor?

In the midst of the Conservative Party Conference, new prime minister Liz Truss is facing a hard challenge to her leadership.

Here’s Professor Tim Wilson to explain:

Linking benefits to inflation was a Boris Johnson policy that – like so many others – he never got round to (probably because he was too busy partying, giving away perks to Tory friends and donors, and meeting Russian oligarchs without the benefit of Foreign Office chaperones).

Ms Mordaunt, who is Leader of the House of Commons, is quoted by BBC News as having said,

“We want to make sure that people are looked after and that people can pay their bills. We are not about trying to help people with one hand and take away with another.”

This made Truss look very bad when she responded that the government has to be “fiscally responsible” and bring down the national debt.

She’s saying that cutting the amount of money going into the economy from private sources – which is all the national debt is – is more important than the homes, lives and livelihoods of millions of UK citizens.

And those millions include people in work whose wages have been squeezed so low – by the Tories over the last 12 years – that they have to claim benefits simply to try to make ends meet.

Failing to link payments with inflation will mean that benefits will no longer fulfil that function after Tory policies ensured that inflation skyrocketed.

So Truss’s choice is to honour Johnson’s pledge and find a different way than cutting benefits to reach her own target, or to stab the UK’s most vulnerable people in the back. And that is now public knowledge.

The reason it is now public knowledge is Penny Mordaunt. How long do you think she is going to keep her job?
