Terrified Tories are running from media scrutiny

If the people of Peterborough return a Conservative to Parliament after this display, I would be very surprised.

Labour won Peterborough fair and square, according to police election inquiry

Lisa Forbes: She won the Peterborough Parliamentary seat by 683 votes.

This is good news.

Also, as I seem to recall supporters of the second-placed Brexit Party had made the most noise about electoral offences in Peterborough, isn’t it great that they now have time to gather themselves before making the same complaints in Brecon and Radnorshire?

Five allegations of malpractice at a Parliamentary by-election were unfounded, a police inquiry concluded.

Labour won the Peterborough seat last month, after its incumbent MP Fiona Onasanya was forced out after being jailed for lying to police.

However, allegations of bribery, postal vote issues, burning of ballots and breaching the privacy of the vote were made to Cambridgeshire Police.

A spokesman confirmed the force found no criminal activity had taken place.

Police had already concluded that three of the allegations were unfounded.

Brexit Party launches legal challenge against by-election result. What the…?

Shurely shome mishtake? Nigel Farage’s demand for an inquiry into Peterborough by-election result contradicts his entire strategy over the EU referendum.

Does nobody else find it hypocritical in the extreme that the Brexit Party is challenging the result of a public vote?

On this occasion, it’s the vote that put a Labour MP on the Peterborough Parliamentary seat with an increased majority of 683 after a by-election this month.

Apparently the evidence on which Nigel Farage is demanding an inquiry is so weak it includes a rumour on the day of the election that Labour would win by 500 votes. Idle chatter is now grounds to challenge an election, then.

We’ll remember this tactic if the Brexit Party dares to bring a candidate to Brecon and Radnorshire.

His comments on the matter are pure waffle: “This is about a lot more than Peterborough. It is about a system that is wide open to corruption, to intimidation, to bribery, to abuse on a whole number of levels. I have mentioned this a number of times in the past.” Meaningless.

As the Politics Live pundits would say, the “optics” on this are disastrous:

We’re seeing the party that said “you lost – get over it” about the EU referendum failing to get over its own loss in a by-election.

Remember all the times Mr Farage and his Brexiteers said Remainers only wanted a second referendum because they didn’t get their own way in the first?

Isn’t he demanding exactly the same thing now?

Nutty Nigel Farage wants a say in Brexit after LOSING a by-election. Phew, what a loony!

All mouth: Nigel Farage.

Just a quick reminder:

Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party won 29 seats in the EU Parliament election after falsely claiming that they would use those seats to get Brexit done. In fact, the European Parliament won’t have any further say in the matter.

In any case, look at Mr Farage’s voting record: “Absent”, “absent”, “absent”. People who voted for the Brexit Party elected MEPs who won’t even turn up.

Yesterday, at the Peterborough by-election, Mr Farage’s candidate lost.

So why has he just delivered a letter to Downing Street, demanding a place in any new Brexit negotiating team?

He simply hasn’t earned the right, he certainly doesn’t have any experience, and it is a sign of insanity that he is claiming he should.

Perhaps he’s getting desperate to find a way of delivering our National Health Service to his friend Donald Trump? We must not let that happen.

As for his general approach, he is a trash-talking chief of a party with no policies. Has he even published a manifesto for those EU elections?

There can be only one conclusion:

He is a modern-day example of the Emperor’s new clothes. He is all mouth and no trousers.

Thanks, Brexit Party! You helped Labour win the Peterborough by-election

“Cheers ears, Brexiteers”: Labour’s Lisa Forbes gives her winning speech after the Peterborough by-election, having won a greater majority than former MP Fiona Onasanya.

How nice of the Brexit Party to give Labour’s Lisa Forbes a leg-up into the Parliamentary seat for Peterborough, after yesterday’s by-election.

The constituency is a marginal. Labour’s Fiona Onasanya took it from the Conservative Stewart Jackson with a majority of just 607 in 2017. The incumbent had consistently taken more than 40 per cent of the vote since he was first elected in 2005 but the election that Theresa May called out of vanity produced extraordinary numbers for both her party and Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, and this was one of the surprises of the night.

Such a small majority on a 67.5 per cent turnout should give Labour cause to fear the Tories taking back the seat in a by-election in which turnouts are lower.

But there was a fly in the Tory ointment – the Brexit Party.

Nigel Farage’s organisation took 29 seats in the European Parliament election last month, creating a huge stir in the right-wing media (including the BBC) that this was a major new force in politics.

Polls suggested that the populist, single-issue (has it published its EU election manifesto yet?) party would gain its first MP in Peterborough.

That hasn’t happened but the 28.9 per cent of yesterday’s vote that it took hammered the Conservatives down to just 21.4 per cent.

That’s on a reduced turnout of 48.3 per cent.

Labour’s vote was hit too – Ms Forbes’s 31 per cent of the vote is a drop of 17 per cent on the 2017 election. But her majority is 683 – more than Ms Onasanya’s.

It seems clear that the Brexit Party undermined the Tory vote and let Labour win. Thanks, Brexiteers!

Note also that the Tories ended up in third place, after coming fifth in the EU elections. Let’s hope they stay there or lower – for the sake of the UK.

Labour is back on top. Thanks, Brexiteers!

Don’t have a strop, Change UK, because Labour will contest an election IN THE NORMAL WAY

Gavin Shuker: Labour wants to run a normal election campaign so he’s going to sulk.

How ridiculous of the most ridiculous political organisation to turn up (until the Brexit Party arrived).

Apparently Change UK, the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats have been discussing the possibility of uniting behind an independent candidate in the upcoming Peterborough Parliamentary by-election.

This candidate would have supported remaining in the European Union and would have advocated for a “People’s Vote” second referendum on that subject.

There was nothing to stop them from doing this.

But it seems the candidate they chose to support has now withdrawn, after the Labour Party said it would not join this alliance and would campaign to win the constituency on its own terms.

This should come as no surprise because Labour is not a “Remain”-supporting party – or “Leave”-supporting, in fact. Labour respects the result of the referendum but is sceptical about the possibility of negotiating an acceptable decoupling deal with the EU and will support another referendum if a workable deal proves impossible to achieve.

And this is a by-election for a Parliamentary constituency – not a mini-referendum on Brexit – so Labour is well within its rights to want to campaign on local issues.

Change UK’s response was to throw its toys out of the pram. Here’s part of Gavin Shuker’s statement:

“Senior Labour figures, including senior figures campaigning for a people’s vote, made it clear that they would strenuously disrupt the campaign and obstruct an independent candidate, driven by fears that it would harm their party in Peterborough.”

In other words, he was whining about Labour holding a normal election campaign.

One wonders whether this outburst was prompted by the fact that Change UK didn’t manage to register a candidate of its own in time (the Greens and Lib Dems did).

Reaction on the social media has been acid:
