Is rough sleeping set to rocket amid claim Tories are quietly withdrawing hotel room funding scheme

Back to the streets: do the Tories think the coronavirus crisis is over so they can dump homeless people back on the streets?

Homeless people are set to be forced back onto the streets after it was claimed the Tory government is quietly scrapping a scheme to house them in hotels during the coronavirus crisis.

According to the Manchester Evening News,

Civil servants have told Greater Manchester officials that the scheme – known as ‘Everyone In’ – is no longer being funded by central government and that March’s original Covid guidance to local authorities has been scrapped.

So far 1,600 homeless people with nowhere to self-isolate have been put up in emergency accommodation here during the crisis, including hundreds in hotels, as authorities were directed to protect them from the spread of the virus.

But a leaked report to the region’s combined authority reveals the Ministry for Communities, Housing and Local Government has now ‘drawn a line’ under its programme and has told councils it will no longer be funded, although no ministerial statement has been made to that effect.

The government denies reneging on its commitments.

The government has said that it does not recognise clams that it is winding up its support for rough sleepers helped off the streets during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government press office has said:

“We do not recognise the claims made by Greater Manchester Combined Authority in one of their internal reports which was leaked to the media.

“Any suggestion that the government is reneging on the commitment set out at the start of this national emergency is entirely wrong. We have been clear councils should continue to provide safe accommodation for those who need it, and any suggestion that funding is being withdrawn or people asked to leave hotels by central government is entirely incorrect. This misleading information causes unneeded anxiety and confusion for vulnerable people at an already difficult time.”

Boris’s violent Britain: homeless man has coffee thrown on him WHILE BEING INTERVIEWED

John: his handwritten sign says he doesn’t abuse drugs or alcohol, but it seems most people don’t read it and simply lump him in with the ‘junkies’.

This is what happens when we elect a Tory government that likes to create false divisions between us.

A homeless man named John was in the middle of an interview with a reporter from the Liverpool Echo when a passerby casually threw coffee over him, drenching his belongings and the place where he was sitting.

It is symptomatic of the state of the UK today – a condition that the Conservatives have been trying to create since 2010.

So they have set the able-bodied against the disabled, the employed against the jobless – and the homeless, sparked Islamophobia and xenophobia (hatred of foreigners).

It is possible they even caused the rift between certain gullible Jews and the Labour Party.

John, 40, had done nothing wrong; he is a trained plasterer with 25 years’ experience. He became unable to work after losing part of a finger in an accident.

The loss of income gave his landlord an opportunity to evict him and his partner and he has spent the last seven months sleeping in a tent on the streets.

He told the reporter the incident was one of many he had experienced since he became homeless.

After the interview, the Echo understands a policeman arrived and moved John on. Yet more attention from the man who threw the coffee?

Thankfully, there is still a little good in this country:

John said a kind Scouser bought him a mobile phone over Christmas, which he uses to keep contact with his 10-year-old son.

A security guard at River Island, on Church Street, charges the phone for him and makes sure he has a cup of coffee to drink in the morning.

And there is advice about how to help people sleeping rough in the source article – see below.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the Tories have normalised unpleasantness and division. They have made it seem acceptable to assault other human beings on the street – for example by throwing coffee over them.

The perpetrators know that if they get a reaction, it is the homeless guy who’ll take the blame. They think they have a licence to abuse these people.

And so does every single person who votes ‘Conservative’.

This Bristol arts centre is letting homeless people use its address to vote in the election

Trailblazer: The Arnolfini, in Bristol – now standing in as a home for rough sleepers who want to vote in the election.

Wouldn’t it be great if other organisations followed the example of the Arnolfini in This Writer’s home city, Bristol?

Bosses at the arts organisation in central Bristol are letting homeless people use their address so they can vote in the General Election.

Rough sleepers have under a week to register to have their say in the coming election on December 12.

According to the Bristol Post:

Just two per cent of homeless people are on the electoral roll which could largely be down to the process of registering being so hard for people without a home.

They have to print off and then post a form – something that most people without access to a computer would find impossible.

To help rough sleepers, workers at the Arnolfini will print off the forms, send them off, let people use their address and give them a free hot drink while their register.

A spokesperson posted on Facebook: “Don’t lose your vote.

“If you know any homeless people that would like to vote but don’t have an address they can use ours.

“Just let them know to pop to the Arnolfini Café Bar. We’ll give them a form and a hot drink.”

The Post stated that the Electoral Commission has also approved the Bristol Beer Factory in Southville as a place homeless people who sleep rough can use as their address.

The cafe there will also offer people a free hot drink while they register.

This Writer would like to ask other organisations in different constituencies across the UK to provide the same facilities, if possible.

Many people who are homeless and living on the streets are only there because they have suffered the brunt of Conservative austerity.

We should all – in every constituency – be going out of our way to provide them the opportunity to vote – something the Tories have done their best to take away.

Deaths of homeless people hit record high – but Tories are STILL lying that they care

A record 726 homeless people died in 2018 due to Conservative government policies – and Tory mouthpieces Therese Coffey and Danny Finkelstein are still pretending their party cares.

The novice Work and Pensions Secretary and the former Tory speechwriter professed outrage at claims that the Conservatives were not compassionate (remember “compassionate Conservatism”?) and didn’t care in a stomach-turning display of hypocrisy on the BBC’s Politics Live.

Ms Coffey tried to blame the 22 per cent increase in deaths since 2017 on drug use. But why do people take drugs? They do it to escape the hell of their existence – a hell into which they have been forced by Tory policies.

Universal Credit, the Bedroom Tax, and cuts to sickness and disability benefits have all been engineered to make it impossible for people to afford to pay for their accommodation and to eat.

Have no doubt about this – the Tories have been deliberately levering poor people out of their homes. The evidence is in the policies and in their result.

If they really were trying to solve homelessness – as they vowed to do in 2017 – there would have been a 100 per cent fall in homelessness-related deaths, not a 22 per cent increase.

A record number of homeless people died last year, marking the biggest increase in deaths since reporting began, official data shows.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show an estimated 726 homeless people died in England and Wales in 2018. This is a 22% rise from 2017 and the highest surge since the data was first collected in 2013.

Drug-related deaths saw the biggest increase, rising by 55% since 2017.

Charities called for an urgent investigation into the deaths of vulnerable people, saying it was heartbreaking and that they should not die “unnoticed and unaccounted for”.

The mouthpieces rushed to cover their political rears on Politics Live, provoking a predictable reaction from This Writer:

Even The Guardian‘s Helen Pidd was finding excuses for the Tories, with a claim that defied reason:

And the simple fact is that deaths will continue to rise until homelessness becomes an automatic death sentence.

I said that was the plan when the Conservatives announced their plan to halve homelessness by 2022 and eliminate it by 2027 – and this is more evidence that I was right.

The answer to homelessness, and the problems that come with it, have been known for years – give these people a place to live! That would relieve burdens on the health service and also on the police and justice system – as has been proved in Utah.

The Conservatives know this but refuse to take the appropriate action.

Therefore we may conclude that they are deliberately driving people to their deaths.

And there’s only one way to stop it – unless you are one of the thugs who consider rough sleepers to be targets for violence and would rather pour petrol on them and set them alight than help. And I don’t think Vox Political readers are thugs.

We need a Labour government, as soon as possible – or these Tory policy deaths will only increase.

Government enacts more of its ‘out of sight, out of mind’ policy on people sleeping rough

Red light for rough sleepers: We are told the ‘night shift’ left their tunnel, which led to Elizabeth Tower, every morning at 6am and tidied up after themselves.

Parliament has installed rolldown shutters on an underpass leading to the Parliamentary estate, preventing a group of rough sleepers from staying there overnight.

The homeless people involved had been meticulous in their behaviour and saw no reason for the draconian move.

But This Writer recalls the fuss after two homeless people died within sight of Parliament last year.

Rather than act to help stop people from becoming homeless, Parliament acted to remove homeless people from the vicinity of the Palace of Westminster.

The policy has become known as “out of sight, out of mind”.

And I think this is part of it.

It doesn’t matter how well-behaved these people are; the fact that they exist is a reminder of the real effect of Conservative government policies in the fifth-richest economy in the world.

A group of rough sleepers who describe themselves as the parliamentary “night shift”, moving into an underpass leading to the parliamentary estate after MPs have left for the day, have been barred from accessing their relatively safe bed space underneath the street.

The group of about 10 rough sleepers formed a distinct community with rules of conduct. They made themselves invisible from MPs and parliamentary workers and visitors during the day and only emerged after 11pm to lay out their cardboard, newspaper and sleeping bags in the exit 3 underpass from Westminster tube station to the parliamentary estate.

None of the group were involved in begging, substance abuse or rowdy behaviour and those who joined had to abide by the group’s informal code of conduct, especially being willing to get up before 6am to vacate their nocturnal space before parliament’s daytime business begins and leaving the tunnel clean and tidy with no newspaper, cardboard or food and drink waste left behind.

Tory bid to stop homeless people dying outside Parliament is an outrage

The Conservative Party has decided the best way to stop homeless people from dying outside Parliament is to make them go away and die somewhere else.

Tory-run Westminster council is using an excuse that the streets have to be cleaned, so private belongings left there by homeless people will be removed, to force people away from the area.

The council is claiming, weakly, that the purge is not aimed at anybody in particular, but it seems certain this underhanded move has been motivated by the death of Gyula Remes in late December.

Signs have been put up on walls directly opposite tributes to Mr Remes, saying: “These walkways are cleaned on a daily basis. Private property must not be left unattended within the walkways. Any property or possessions that appear to be left unattended for any period of time and for whatever reason may be removed without any further notice and may be disposed of as litter or waste.”

In cold winter weather, possessions like blankets and sleeping bags are a lifeline for people who have been forced to sleep rough because of cruel Conservative policies.

The threat to remove these items under the pretext of cleaning the streets is a transparent attempt to move homeless people away, so MPs don’t have to see the human effect of their policies and don’t have to witness the deaths that are directly attributable to their decisions.

I would not be surprised if Conservative-run Westminster Council had been ordered to do this by their party leader, Theresa May.

The prime minister certainly put her foot in her mouth when discussing homelessness during Prime Minister’s Questions today (January 9).

Here’s Labour’s Rachael Maskell to set the scene:

Mrs May responded: ““Every death of someone while hopeless…erm, homeless or sleeping rough on our streets is one too many.”

“Hopeless”?

If that’s her attitude, no wonder her cronies on Westminster Council are clearing these people off the streets.

And does she really mean every death is one too many, or that every death we are able to see is one too many?

For the answer to that, I think we only have to look at the Department for Work and Pensions, which hid the unexplained deaths of thousands of claimants from public sight until I was able to use Freedom of Information laws to bring the facts to light – after years of legal arguments.

It seems clear that Conservatives such as Mrs May are happy to take the decisions that kill off the vulnerable; they just don’t want to see it happening.

So they get their council friends to do the dirty work for them and then stutter about it in Parliament. Sickening.

Could this exhibition challenge dehumanisation and abuse of the homeless?

Real people: The exhibition combines images of formerly-homeless people with a line of text describing their character.

This is a terrific idea because it reminds us that homeless people are human too.

It is easy to de-humanise the people sleeping rough or begging – to view them as obstacles to be passed or ignored.

That seems an easy route to the kind of behaviour that has been connected to the deaths of rough sleepers recently.

But the Inspirational Voices exhibition at Manchester’s Piccadilly railway station will present huge portraits of people who have been homeless, along with a label chosen by the model to represent their personality.

Homelessness charity The Booth Centre, which provides advice on finding accommodation, education and training as well as helping to secure long-term employment, is to be praised for this idea.

And Greater Manchester is leading the way in its monitoring of what happens to the homeless. Labour mayor Andy Burnham has launched an initiative to record the deaths of homeless people after the Westminster government showed it couldn’t care less.

The exhibition will take place in the railway station’s concourse from November 12-18, and will then move to Media City for a week. It would be welcome if we saw it on television, then.

No doubt most people will walk past this exhibition without giving it a second thought.

But if even a minority are influenced by it, some good will have been done.

Huge portraits of former rough sleepers and homeless people will take pride of place at Manchester’s biggest train station.

The Inspirational Voices exhibition aims to challenge misconceptions of homelessness by capturing each person’s individual achievements and hopes.

Rough sleeping up 134 per cent while UK’s richest increase wealth by 183 per cent and developers hog land for 130,000 homes


Compassionate Conservatism? It’s more like Conscious Cruelty!

Bearing in mind the fact that the UK is the sixth-richest country in the world, the following is a scandal in itself:

Want to argue with the statistics? The evidence is all around.

The moral of the story:

And that is the fact of the matter. Homelessness has more than doubled since 2010 because of the policies of the Conservative and Conservative-led government.

The Tories have squeezed wages and benefits to the point where people are unable to hold onto their homes; they go into debt and then they go out on the street.

But what else has been happening while all this has been going on?

See for yourself:

“The combined wealth of the richest 1,000 people in the UK has increased by 183 per cent over the past 10 years.

“As austerity continues to bite low-income households shocking figures show the wealthiest in society now rake in almost three times what they did in 2009.

“Ten years ago the wealthiest 1,000 people in Britain had a combined wealth of £256 billion, but the same cohort now sit on some £724 billion.

“The figures show that the pace of change has been ramped up notably over the past five years, which has seen wealth grow by £274 billion, and £66 billion in the past year alone.”

So impoverishing the masses is big business for the privileged few!

Ah, but all but the most destitute have managed to find a house to live in before now. What’s the difference today? Is it the fact that fewer homes are available for rent and there is a shortage of homes-to-buy, meaning the value of mortgages has gone through the roof, and help-to-buy is a club for people who are already wealthy?

Could be!

And if you’re concerned about the shortage of new houses, you’ll be furious about this:

“Developers are sitting on land for more than 130,000 homes in England that have never been built – the worst gap on record, according to new analysis.

“The analysis of housing ministry (MCHLG) figures showed that in 2016-17, planning permission for 313,700 new homes was given, but only 183,570 homes built, meaning a notional annual gap of more than 130,000 homes, the biggest divergence since records began in 2006.

“The percentage of homes built versus permission granted was just 58%, a rate that has been roughly steady since 2012.

“Landowners sell at a price that factors in a significant increase in value after obtaining planning consent, meaning a hectare of agricultural land worth £20,000 can sell for closer to £2m if it is zoned for housing. [But] developers regularly deny using land to speculate, arguing more profit can usually be made from building.”

It’s hard to believe that when developers are sitting on land and only building houses when they can be sure of a certain price. Land has always been a certain way to make money – and look how rich the richest people in the UK have become, while property prices go through the roof…

… And the number of people thrown onto the streets increases exponentially.
