And isn’t it worse when media giants like the BBC play into their hands?
Perhaps that’s why Grant Shapps’s attempt to play at being money-saving expert Martin Lewis fell as flat as it did:

He has joined YouTube stars Mark and Roxanne Hall – otherwise known as LadBaby – to record a Christmas song raising money for people affected by the cost-of-living crisis created by Tory ministers like Shapps.
Proceeds from their cover of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas will be shared equally between food bank charity The Trussell Trust and the Band Aid Foundation.
According to the BBC (how ironic),
“We never intended to release a fifth Christmas single but as ambassadors of the Trussell Trust we were not prepared to sit back and do nothing in a year when people are struggling more than ever,” Mark and Roxanne said in a statement.
They approached Bob Geldof and Midge Ure (the original writers of Do They Know It’s Christmas) to ask for permission six months ago.
“I wasn’t as difficult as people might think,” said Mark.
“Bob said he was excited to see what we were going to do, and they’ve approved everything – all the lyrics we wrote, the music video, who we got involved. Everything.”
Lewis said he was amazed to have been approached for help.
“I thought they’d confused me with someone else,” he said. “The nearest I’ve ever got to thinking about a Christmas number one is going to the loo on Boxing Day after too much orange juice the day before.
“Yet once I knew they were serious, and it was for the Trussell Trust, a hugely important charity I’ve a history with, I decided to give it a go, and do it with gusto.”
Mark said he had approached the money-saving expert because “he knows more than most how to help people in this country”.
Remember: 100 per cent of profits from every download of the recording will go towards the fight against food hunger – and that could make a real difference to lives across the country.
Matt Hancock: this may well be his reaction when he hears this song.
They’re called Send-a-Song and their day job is producing personalised music – “from re-imagined operatic classics to brand new original songs”. Apparently this is just a bit of fun on the side.
Their new piece – following up on the smash hit (on This Site, at least) Suella de Vil is called Because They Vote Tory and is based on Sam Smith’s Bodyshop.
Send-a-Song’s own comment on it is: “Not our usual style, but this song BANGS.”

I’ve enjoyed his work ever since discovering him on Radio 4’s The Now Show a few years ago.

Even the cover of the new Madness song, Bullingdon Boys, is a jab at Boris Johnson and his colleagues – including former PM David Cameron.
Mr Cameron is depicted in the mask worn by serial killer Michael Myers in the Halloween movies.
And Mr Johnson’s face is replaced by that of Porky Pig.
Other club members are depicted as a red-eyed reptile, the Devil, and an S&M fetishist (as far as I can tell).
According to NME, the song is the first Madness have released in three years, and is described as a “barbed swipe at the charlatans, rotters and chancers at the top of the tree who have done their best to take the shine off 2019.”
Inspired by the fact that 19 of the 54 UK Prime Ministers have come from Eton, the new song takes aim at Johnson, who was educated at Eton College before going on to study at Oxford, and his peers with anti-Tory lyrics.
The tagline on the artwork is a clear call for those of us with good taste in music to use our votes against Mr Johnson and his Tory cronies: “Don’t get bullied by the bully boys.”

Victims of racism and misogyny: Donald Trump has told these four Congresswomen to “go back” to the countries from which they came; they are all US citizens.
Has anybody else been watching the ongoing soap opera of Donald Trump, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib (together with other US Democratic Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley), and the Israeli government headed by Benjamin Netanyahu with the same astonished bemusement as This Writer?
I mean, how can anybody justify this out-and-out racism from the leaders of two supposedly democratic countries?
You’ll remember it started when Mr Trump decided to publish racist tweets about the four ladies (three of whom were born in the US and one was naturalised after coming to that country as a child), suggesting they should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came”.
Unless he was referring to “totally broken and crime infested places” in the United States, that’s stark racism, right there.
The when Ms Omar and Ms Tlaib were preparing to visit Israel, he put pressure on Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to block them from being allowed entry to that country. The first Muslim women elected to Congress, they were going to visit the occupied Palestinian territories, most notably the West Bank.
Ms Omar responded to the ban by saying it was an “affront” for Mr Netanyahu to give in to pressure from Mr Trump. Others have strongly criticised the US president for influencing a foreign leader against his own political opponents.
“Trump’s Muslim ban is what Israel is implementing, this time against two duly elected Members of Congress,” said Ms Omar.
“Sadly, this is not a surprise given the public positions of Prime Minister Netanyahu, who has consistently resisted peace efforts, restricted the freedom of movement of Palestinians, limited public knowledge of the brutal realities of the occupation and aligned himself with Islamophobes like Donald Trump.”
Mr Netanyahu’s decision has harmed Israel’s position among US politicians, with staunch Israel support and minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, calling it a sign of “weakness, not strength”, and saying it would “only hurt the US-Israeli relationship and support for Israel in America”.
House speaker Nancy Pelosi added that it was “beneath the dignity of the great State of Israel”. She said Mr Trump’s interference was “a sign of ignorance and disrespect, and beneath the dignity of the office of the president”.
2020 Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders said, “It is disgusting that a bigot like Trump is attacking Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar in this way. Opposing Netanyahu’s policies is not ‘hating the Jewish people.’ We must stand together against those who promote hatred and racism in Israel, Palestine, the US and everywhere.”
And yet Mr Trump seems to be hugely popular with a certain slab off the American people – popularity that has no rational explanation and that has been lampooned rather brutally but effectively in the following video:
Perhaps this is the way forward?
After Nick Clegg had the satirical song treatment with Sorry, which turned his apology for the Liberal Democrats’ decision to ditch their policy to cancel student tuition fees and support tripling them instead, in order to go into the disastrous coalition government with the Conservatives, he disappeared from public view and is now in charge of censoring left-wing political websites combating ‘fake news’ on Facebook.
It’s true that right-wing politicians hate the ridicule of the mob.
But will it work on Mr Trump?
Let’s be honest. Based on our experience of the last few years, he’d probably claim it was adulation.

Windrush immigrant: Aldwyn Roberts, otherwise known as Lord Kitchener.
Here’s a historic irony that I discovered while going through a book I received – for my birthday, of all things.
The book – 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die – includes a listing for London Is The Place For Me by an artist calling himself Lord Kitchener.

Aldwyn Roberts, who performed as Lord Kitchener, was a Windrush immigrant – and there is newsreel footage of him disembarking from the Empire Windrush, singing this song.
The fresh-faced optimism of the lyrics and the upbeat calypso rhythm are ironic, considering what the current Conservative government did to the Windrush generation.
