James Cleverly says he gives his wife Rohypnol to stop her from leaving him. Surprised?

James Cleverly: He was once described as “the Tories’ go-to eejit when they need someone to tweet absolute nonsense or defend the indefensible”. He has excelled himself this time.

I can’t say this came as a shock.

James Cleverly – currently the Conservative government’s Home Secretary, here in the UK; the minister responsible for the police and law enforcement – has apparently joked that spiking his wife with “a little bit of Rohypnol” – the illegal date-rape drug – was “not really illegal if it’s only a little bit”.

Buy Cruel Britannia in print here. Buy the Cruel Britannia ebook here. Or just click on the image!

He allegedly went on to say that he constantly drugs his wife to ensure she doesn’t run off with someone else:

Who would blame her if she did run off with someone else?

His comment clarifies what some of us have believed about Tories for a considerable amount of time; that they don’t understand how the law is supposed to apply to all of us, equally, all of the time.

So even though Rohypnol is very definitely totally illegal in the UK, he thinks it’s “not really”, if it’s “only a little bit”.

We should thank him for explaining that – as a Tory – he is above the law that we all have to obey.

And his wife should dump him like landfill waste. The rest of us will have to wait until the general election.

POLL: with the second Covid-19 wave well under way, shall we pre-empt the Tories and lay blame?

Who can disagree with this?

It does indeed.

And the Tories seem keen to spread the blame, offering several candidates for us to accuse already.

But we don’t have to believe them!

It’s time for a poll:

Don’t fund Tories: Worried about Covid spike from Wetherspoons overcrowding? Don’t go to that Tory pub!

The Guardian is reporting that Wetherspoon pubs are failing to prevent overcrowding, and this may cause a spike in Covid-19 cases.

The answer is simple: Don’t go into a Wetherspoon pub.

I’ll even give you a good reason not to go:

Every item you buy in a Wetherspoon pub increases Conservative Party funds.

So if you have been harmed by Boris Johnson’s failures on flooding, Covid-19, the economy, school exams or any of the other ways he has harmed the UK, it would be the height of stupidity to cross the threshold of a Wetherspoon pub.

The company is on This Site’s list of Tory donors you should boycott.

And the message is simple:

Don’t fund Tories – they’ll only hurt you again.

UK could face second lockdown ‘within months’ as outbreaks occur across the nation

Closed: the indecent haste with which Boris Johnson has been rushing England out of lockdown has already created Covid-19 infection spikes in several cities, and in schools across that country.

The UK faces a second wave of Covid-19 in as little as a few weeks, according to a professor of global public health.

Devi Sridhar, who acts as the public health adviser for Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon, warned of “constant outbreaks” as lockdown restrictions ease across the country.

She tweeted: “I know that everyone wants the economy to go full steam ahead in the UK. But I fear we will be in another lockdown within months, if not weeks…

“Eliminate the virus over the summer then open up safely. Otherwise enter winter and flu season in a dangerous halfway house.”

Here’s the proof of her words:

Three new coronavirus hotspots named in list of top 10 worst-hit areastrumpeted the Mirror on July 9:

The information from Public Health England shows that the number of infections is on the rise in Blackburn, Bedford and Peterborough.

Leicester continues to have the highest number of Covid-19 infections in the UK, and Health Secretary Matt Hancock was forced to admit that this has been largely fuelled by outbreaks in schools.

So it should come as no surprise to learn that Covid-19 in schools is at its highest level in six weeks – since they were reopened at the beginning of June:

The graph, by the way, shows the number of schools affected. The number of infections is likely to be significantly higher.

So there it is.

Perhaps you don’t think there’s any reason to worry. After all, both the Tory government and the Labour opposition are keen to tell you that it’s all under control and there is no cause for worry.

As the Covid-19 unnecessary death toll in the UK inches closer to 70,000, just have a think about whether you believe that before you head off to the pub.

You’d better prepare for a Covid-19 second wave disaster because the Tories aren’t going to

Rishi Sunak: he won’t give the NHS any more cash because the Tory story is that Covid-19 is over.

Is anybody surprised that Rishi Sunak is refusing to give the NHS £10 billion to prepare for an expected new wave of Covid-19 infections?

The Tory narrative is that Covid is over.

Their government is sending people back to work, despite the number of deaths per day still being higher than when lockdown started. Tory donors are tired of going without their huge daily profits so the rest of us are being forced back to work, whether it kills us or not.

The pubs reopening, and the beaches being open before them, are just a means for the Tories to excuse themselves. They’ll say that any deaths arise from people’s leisure experiences, not from being forced back to work too soon.

Of course, putting money towards the treatment of renewed infections runs against this story – so Sunak won’t do it.

It doesn’t matter how many plebs die as a result.

NHS bosses have accused the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, of breaking a pledge to give the health service “whatever it needs” after he refused to provide a £10bn cash injection needed to avoid it being crippled by a second wave of the coronavirus.

They have warned ministers that without the money the NHS will be left perilously unprepared for next winter and the second spike in infections which doctors believe is inevitable. Nor will they be able to restart non-Covid services or treat the growing backlog in patients needing surgery.

The row piles pressure on Sunak to find more money for the NHS ahead of his summer statement on Wednesday.

The NHS England chief executive, Simon Stevens, has told the Treasury that it needs at least £10bn in extra funding this year to cover the costs of fighting the virus and reopen normal services. The money would mean the NHS could create extra beds in hospitals, keep the Nightingale facilities on standby, send patients to private hospitals for surgery and provide protective equipment for frontline staff.

How many of the Bournemouth beach idiots are already giving Covid-19 to their family and friends?

Bournemouth beach: how many of these twits will have Covid-19 as a result of this day’s madness?

Half a million halfwits sitting on a beach.

Half a million halfwits sitting on a beach,

And if one of those halfwits should have Covid-19,

There’ll be half a million halfwits sitting in hospital.

It doesn’t rhyme but it gets the point across, I hope. The worst part of it is that everybody who went to Bournemouth beach on the hottest day of the year had every right to be there because Boris Johnson has been permitting visits to English beaches since the end of May.

Of course, everybody who went was supposed to adhere to the two metre distancing rule (or is it “one metre plus”, whatever that means?) and they clearly didn’t bother.

There will be a spike in Covid-19 infections. That is inevitable. I wonder if those who caught the virus during their trip will think the possibility of death, or the contraction of life-changing conditions, is a good trade-off for half a day’s suntan.

I wonder how many of the friends and family members they’ll have infected since that beach visit will feel the same.

And there’s another aspect to this.

An increase in Covid-19 infections will mean more people attending hospitals with the disease, exposing our NHS staff to further risk of infection – and Parliament – by which I mean 331 Conservative MPs – has just voted to deny weekly Covid-19 testing to doctors, nurses and support staff in the NHS.

What does that suggest to you?

To This Writer, it’s as if Boris Johnson has been lining you all up for the so-called Second Wave – and many of you got in the queue of your own accord, thinking it was for ice cream.

Coronavirus: Countries that relaxed lockdown are suffering second spikes – and Johnson’s talking about copying them

What a timing malfunction: on the day Boris Johnson tried to talk the UK into accepting his plan to relax lockdown restrictions, countries that have already made this choice reported increased infections and reimposed them.

Strangely enough, This Writer was only discussing the issue last week – with a guy who was saying that places like Germany have relaxed restrictions and nothing bad happened:

https://twitter.com/ricoforest30/status/1258431809135808513

https://twitter.com/ricoforest30/status/1258433256267137025

Well, I don’t know about Austria and Denmark, but as for Germany

New coronavirus infections are accelerating again in Germany just days after its leaders loosened social restrictions, raising concerns that the pandemic could once again slip out of control. The Robert Koch Institute for disease control said in a daily bulletin the number of people each sick person now infects – known as the reproduction rate, or R – had risen to 1.1.

Germany isn’t the only country having difficulties.

In South Korea

The South Korean government issued an emergency order on Friday for the closure of all bars in Seoul after a single clubber infected at least 40 people and exposed over 1,900 more to the coronavirus. The closure is indefinite.

The authorities were forced to trace the contacts of the 29-year-old man, who has not been named, after his night out in the Itaewon district of Seoul – and have so far found at least forty people confirmed with the infection. The country had previously been free of domestic transmission of the virus after an extensive and rigorous programme of testing, tracing and isolating as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

And in China

An untraced coronavirus outbreak in a Chinese city near the Russian border and a spate of new cases in Wuhan has prompted fears of a fresh wave of infections in China.

On Sunday, Chinese authorities reclassified Shulan, a city near the Russian and North Korean borders, as high risk, after a cluster of cases connected to a woman with no known history of travel or exposure to the virus.

It came just a week after China designated all regions in the country as low or medium risk. On Sunday the country’s national health commission reported 17 new cases, its second day of a double-digit rise and its highest number in nearly two weeks.

These are all countries that were thought to have got their Covid-19 outbreaks under control – only to see them flare up again.

Now Boris Johnson is telling the UK everything is under control – just as the leaders of those other countries probably said to their citizens.

Considering what happened there, what do you think is going to happen here?

Have YOU donated to my crowdfunding appeal, raising funds to fight false libel claims by TV celebrities who should know better? These court cases cost a lot of money so every penny will help ensure that wealth doesn’t beat justice.

People in America are ingesting bleach after Trump suggested it as coronavirus cure

If someone turned up on the telly and told you to ingest bleach to cure the coronavirus, would you do it? Or would you say: “after you”?

This Writer would do the latter.

Sadly, it seems some people in New York, the US city hardest-hit by the pandemic, haven’t had that presence of mind.

We already know that Trump suggested injecting bleach during a White House press briefing:

In the 18 hours immediately after, according to New York’s Poison Control Centre, the city handled:

Nine cases of possible exposure to Lysol, a US brand of disinfectant; 10 cases regarding bleach; and 11 to household cleaners generally.

That’s 30 cases, compared to just 13 in the same period last year.

On Friday, Trump tried to backtrack, claiming his comments had been “sarcastic”. What do you think?

While it seems none of these people have died, someone else hasn’t been as lucky:

Gary Lenius and his wife Wanda, both in their 60s, drank chloroquine phosphate last month after confusing it for hydroxychloroquine – a drug previously touted by Donald Trump as a potential cure to treat Covid-19.

Gary, a retired mechanical engineer living in Arizona, died on March 22 and his wife was left in critical condition after ingesting the toxic chemical.

The man’s wife said she had watched televised briefings during which President Trump talked about the potential benefits of chloroquine.

There’s no denying that this man died, and his wife suffered, because they didn’t understand they were taking the wrong substance.

But it also happened because Donald Trump made an ill-advised comment on American television, direct to his nation.

This Writer has absolutely no doubt that he will do it again and more people will suffer and/or die.

So the moral is clear: if America wants to cut the number of deaths related to the coronavirus crisis, the President must stop talking about it.

The DWP has been silencing news stories that criticise its policies – here’s the proof

The DWP closely monitors media output, and compiles a “sentiment of articles” chart every month to make sure that they receive positive coverage.

The DWP closely monitors media output, and compiles a “sentiment of articles” chart every month to make sure that they receive positive coverage.

Ministers have been doing their best to pretend that they never do anything wrong – and have then done their best to hide the fact that this is what they’re doing.

Doesn’t that tell you everything you need to know about the DWP?

Officers for the Department claimed that the information was “commercially sensitive”, of all things.

That just leads one to ask why. What commercial contracts would this information prejudice?

Clearly the Information Commissioner was not convinced by whatever argument the DWP produced, because we have our information now.

This Blog is one of the social media sources that offers almost exclusively negative coverage of the Department for Work and Pensions, and it is interesting to note how the DWP treated one of my biggest stories.

In August 2015 the DWP “proactively briefed” the media about the long-awaited statistics which showed the amount of ESA claimants who had died after being found fit for work.

I had no way of knowing this at the time, but this action was successful in ‘spiking’ coverage in the FT (whose editors should have known better), the Express (this is more understandable) and on ITV.

The DWP’s commentary stated that the most critical initial coverage of the statistics misrepresented their details. This was because the DWP had done its best to present them in a manner that would be misunderstood. Still, it was able to secure corrections in the Grauniad and the Mirror which weakened the story.

We are left with a clear message: The DWP is more concerned with distorting the facts – or preventing them from being known at all – than with the facts themselves.

It does not matter to Conservative ministers that their policies have killed thousands of people.

They just want to make sure nobody finds out about it.

Following a 13 month battle, the DWP have finally been forced to release secret documents illustrating the tactics they use to control and manipulate the media.

The documents reveal that the DWP monitors and analyses both mainstream and social media to reduce and manage negative coverage.

And even more worryingly, the documents show the DWP have managed to kill hundreds of stories by making sure that they are not reported.

Almost every month since March 2014 the DWP communications team has produced “Media Evaluation Reports” detailing the ways and methods that the DWP controls negative stories about them in the media.

The reports give valuable insight into a department that is unhealthily focused on the press coverage [it receives].

The fact that they have managed to kill so many stories that they don’t approve of raises serious questions as to how the department is exercising its influence over the free press.

The role of journalism is to bring people the truth behind the DWP’s rhetoric, not to act as the chief mouthpiece for it.
