People only sprayed ‘Nazi’ on Nancy Astor’s statue because she was one

The statue of Nancy Astor at Plymouth Hoe – that was only unveiled last year by Theresa May – has been sprayed with the word “Nazi”.

This Writer can’t understand why that word wasn’t included on the plaque.

I wrote about it when former prime minister Theresa May unveiled the statue, quoting from Joseph Kennedy and the Jews:

“Despite her anti-Catholicism, Nancy Astor was friends with US Ambassador to Britain Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. Their correspondence is reportedly filled with anti-Semitic language. Edward J. Renehan, Jr. notes:

“As fiercely anti-Communist as they were anti-Semitic, Kennedy and Astor looked upon Adolf Hitler as a welcome solution to both of these “world problems” (Nancy’s phrase). … Kennedy replied that he expected the “Jew media” in the United States to become a problem, that “Jewish pundits in New York and Los Angeles” were already making noises contrived to “set a match to the fuse of the world”.

She may have been the UK’s first female MP but she was an anti-Semite and a supporter of Nazis.

And that makes Theresa May a supporter of Nazism by proxy, of course. She’s the second (current) Conservative Parliamentarian This Writer has had cause to describe as a Nazi – or worse – in 24 hours.

So when people do this…

A statue of Nancy Astor, the first female MP to take her seat in parliament, has become the latest monument to be targeted by vandals.

The word ‘Nazi’ has been spray painted on the plinth of the statue, along with an Antifascist Circle, a political symbol associated with the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the 1930s.

… I have to ask:

Why would anybody complain?

Court case over acid attack threat to charity trustees is cancelled – because the CPS says it’s too costly

Firebombed: Ms Waugh’s car was firebombed by vandals last July, in what may have been a politically-motivated attack.

A court case against men accused of threatening to break the legs and throw acid in the faces of trustees at a vocal charity helping people in poverty has been halted – because the Crown Prosecution Service says it is too expensive.

Elaine Waugh of Humanity UK (also Humanity Torbay) said the threats, believed to be from far-right activists, were made in May last year; it has taken this long for the case to come to the Crown Court.

The accused were also said to have threatened to firebomb the building.

“These guys pleaded ‘not guilty’ and now the CPS said it would cost too much money for a three-day Crown Court trial – and they’d just get a slapped wrist,” said Ms Waugh.

“Our charity has been broken into and our offices destroyed. They threw bleach – and the police were not interested. They were here for 25 minutes, gave us a crime number and we didn’t hear anything again.

“They took a list of our donors from the Labour Party – and nothing else. Something is going on.”

She told This Site she understood that the people harassing them run a “hate” page on Facebook.

“It’s weird that if we say anything at all [that is objectionable to people on the political right wing], our page gets suspended – but they can say what they like and they aren’t taken down.”

Ms Waugh’s own car was firebombed last July, in an attack that endangered her house and the lives of herself and her family. She said the police told her it was a hate crime against Jews – but she is not Jewish.

“My husband was Jewish, and my two sons,” she said. But if the attack was due to her charity work, she could not see the connection because she is Catholic.

“We’re now on a list for hate crime and minority support and help,” she said. “We then had the Jewish Chronicle getting in touch with me and I had to explain.

“I said it was political.”

Ms Waugh added that she had it on good authority that nearly 500 other UK charities are going through the same abuse.

“We have been told that 465 other charities have been victimised. It has been outrageous,” she said.

Ms Waugh said the charity had lost its chief source of funding after a video she made, criticising the Conservative government, was seen more than six million times during the general election campaign.

It costs only £1,400 per month to run, and the service it provides is vital to poverty-stricken and homeless people.

If you can help, please donate to the organisation’s Go Fund Me site.

Larger organisations willing to provide more substantial and long-lasting sponsorship may contact Ms Waugh via the charity’s Facebook page.

Johnson’s Britain: thugs think it’s okay to vandalise a food bank and force people to starve

Vital: Food banks provide a lifeline to thousands of families the Tories have put on the breadline. But Tory divisiveness is encouraging vandals to attack them.

This is where divide-and-conquer policies like those of Boris Johnson take us.

He has taken a few leaves out of Adolf Hitler’s book, and it shows.

By creating division between people, he both distracts them from the harm he is doing to them all and drums up support for at least some of that harm when he pretends to take a side.

In fact, he doesn’t care about any of the antagonists he has created; he just wants to profit from the strife he has created.

In the latest manifestation of this, we see that vandals have attacked a food bank – not for a first time, but for the fifth.

Organisers have been forced to throw away hundreds of pounds worth of stock that has been spoiled.

And they fear they may have to close the facility altogether.

The vandals will be happy. They have caused a lot of unnecessary harm with a small act of hate.

And hundreds of families will go hungry. Maybe some of them will lose hope and commit suicide (plenty do). Maybe they’ll just starve. Who will care?

A 10ft plinth to deter people from vandalising Thatcher statue? That’s begging for graffiti

Look at all that white space: What a wonderful – free – canvas for any would-be Banksy to pass comment on the woman whose image stands at the top of it. At least, that’s what this artist’s impression suggests.

It seems nobody wants to have a statue of Margaret Thatcher on their doorstep.

Westminster Council rejected plans to put it up in central London last year, basing the decision on a report that it could attract “potential vandalism and civil disorder”.

Now, according to Metro, councillors in Baroness Thatcher’s hometown of Grantham, Lincolnshire, are considering putting the £300,000 statue on a 10ft plinth – also to deter “politically-motivated vandals”.

They haven’t thought it through at all.

A 10ft plinth will be a blank canvas for every wannabe Banksy who wants to try their hand at satirical graffiti.

They’ll come from every corner of the United Kingdom to make their mark on that wonderful 10ft expanse of white stone – and to make a point about the woman whose image will stand at the top of it.

And with 17 objections to the statue plan, and only seven in support, it is doubtful that many people will be upset if they do.
