Given their shared experience, Israeli politicians’ treatment of Zelenskyy is shocking

Volodymyr Zelenskyy: given his shared experience with members of the Israeli Knesset – losing members of their families to the Nazi Holocaust – their reaction to him is shockingly hypocritical.

How many layers of meaning do we have to peel away to understand the disdain shown by Israel’s political leaders to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy?

Was it because he harboured the openly-Nazi Azov Battalion – and sent them into the breakaway Donbas region of eastern Ukraine where they could indulge their love of attacking people who aren’t ethnically Russian?

Wouldn’t that be hypocritical in the light of Israel’s treatment of Palestinian people?

Was it because of an alleged tacit deal in which Moscow looks the other way when Israel bombs Hezbollah targets in Syria, so Israel neglects to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war?

The excuse they fell back on – the usual one – certainly didn’t cut the mustard; they took offence because Zelenskyy compared Putin’s apparent attempt to wipe Ukraine off the map with the Nazi attempt at genocide of the Jews:

“We are in different countries and in completely different conditions,” he said. “But the threat is the same: for both us and you, the total destruction of the people, state, culture. And even of the names: Ukraine, Israel.”

He topped it off by quoting former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir, who was born in Kyiv, saying: “We intend to remain alive. Our neighbours want to see us dead. This is not a question that leaves much room for compromise.”

Members of the Israeli Knesset weren’t going to help Zelenskyy or Ukraine, so they resorted to a common tactic – pretending to have been attacked:

Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel said: “The war [in Ukraine] is awful, but the comparison to the atrocities of the Holocaust and the final solution is an outrage.”

The Likud MP Yuval Steinitz (Likud) said: “…had the speech that was given by Zelensky… been given during normal times, we would say that it borders on Holocaust denial.”

That’s a shocking slur against a Jewish man whose own relatives were killed by Nazis during the same Holocaust.

It seems the UK isn’t the only nation having its hypocrisies exposed by the war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy addresses UK Parliament. Johnson’s hypocrisy is breathtaking

There’s no doubt that Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a brave man, staying in Ukraine to face down assassination attempts. But considering the appalling toll on his people, isn’t it questionable that he seems to have no time for peace, and in fact seems to want to drag the UK into war with Russia? And what about the hypocrisy of Boris Johnson, who has done everything he can to support rich Russians in the UK?

Am I wrong to find it really disturbing that the president of an invaded country gave an address to the UK Parliament and didn’t seem interested in peace at all?

I have to admit I’m having to take my information from the BBC’s report of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s speech – and it could, therefore, be skewed to accommodate propaganda requirements.

The report says Mr Zelenskyy called for Russia to be named a “terrorist state” and for allies to “make sure our skies are safe” – a tactful request for nations like the UK to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine that would drag them into the conflict, potentially to face a Russian nuclear missile attack.

He told MPs: “We will not surrender, we will not lose, we will go to the end.” Disturbingly, this implies that he’s refusing even to consider the possibility of a negotiated peace.

To make matters worse, Mr Zelenskyy then had to put up with the UK’s prime minister, who has done everything possible to protect Russians with money in this country, and who has done everything he could to prevent Ukrainian refugees (who don’t have money) from gaining entry to the UK, pontificating about the pathetic non-help he is offering.

Johnson said Mr Zelenskyy had “moved the hearts of everybody” watching, and pledged to “press on with tightening the economic vice” around Russian President Vladimir Putin, even though his Economic Crime Bill, said to be intended to do just that, in fact offers Russian oligarchs (especially those who donate cash to the Conservative Party?) a way to avoid any penalties at all.

Most embarrassing of all, it seems Johnson then tried to imitate late US President John F Kennedy’s famous speech about Berlin, by saying, “I think today, one of the proudest boasts in the free world is, ‘Ya Ukrainets’ – ‘I am a Ukrainian’.”

Breathtaking hypocrisy – as This Writer predicted on Twitter before the event:

Considering the huge – and indefinite – effects of this war, is it wrong that this whole episode made This Writer’s flesh crawl?

Putin has found ANOTHER way to make the West look stupid: talk

Buddies: Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping of China. Putin seems keen to go back to the negotiating table after a chat in which Xi reminded him of China’s preference to leave other countries’ borders inviolate and their internal affairs to their governments.

Having almost conquered Ukraine within two days, Russian president Vladimir Putin has found another way to make Nato and the western powers including the UK and USA look stupid: negotiations.

According to Reuters,

Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to send a delegation to Minsk for negotiations with representatives of Ukraine, the Kremlin said on Friday after the Russian leader held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The shift in mood could throw a lifeline to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has always said he knows his country can’t withstand an attack by Russia on its own.

He has had to watch Russian troops move into his capital city of Kiev, despite the heroic efforts of his outnumbered and outgunned military – and armed civilians. This could prevent further violence.

And it’s a good move for Putin because it makes the western jingoists look daft again. They’ve been saying he wants to create a new Soviet Union, starting with an occupation of Ukraine, and a trip to the negotiating table – most likely to secure Ukrainian neutrality so it won’t join Nato – will well and truly end that story.

This Writer is willing to bet he’ll take the disputed eastern territories into Russia as part of the negotiations; he’s in a position of power and will use it. He’ll say it’s what the people there want.

If Zelenskyy agrees to talks, and if we’re all very lucky, the violence could be all over by Monday.*

*All right, that’s highly optimistic. But a phrase reminiscent of “It’ll all be over by Christmas” reminds us all of what we’re risking, doesn’t it?
