Widdecombe says Brexit is like the emancipation of slaves. No wonder Verhofstadt called her a clown

Clown: Ann Widdecombe compares her extremely well-paid and privileged job as a member of the European Parliament with slavery.

The Brexit Party started its term in the European Parliament as we all expected, when its members turned their backs on the chamber during a performance of the EU’s anthem, Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’.

Now Ann Widdecombe has increased the damage to the UK’s reputation by comparing leaving the EU with slaves being freed:

“Reactionary muppets” is a mild response.

In fact, it is a grossly offensive claim:

Guy Verhofstadt’s response was appropriate:

A “clown” indeed.

But she and her party have made the whole of the UK into a laughing-stock.

Ann Widdecombe has lost the plot. Brexit is nothing like World War Two

Puppet-master and marionette? Nigel Farage appears to be pulling Ann Widdecombe’s strings. Perhaps that’s why she’s talking nonsense, comparing Brexit with World War Two.

Former Tory – now Brexit Party candidate – Ann Widdecombe has made a bizarre rant comparing Brexit to World War Two:

Brexit Party candidate Ann Widdecombe suggested that any disruption brought on by a no-deal Brexit is justified as it will not compare with the suffering during the Second World War.

Talking about a no-deal Brexit she said: ā€œIt is as nothing compared to the sacrifice that we asked a previous generation to make an order to ensure Britainā€™s freedom.

ā€œMy granny was bombed out in Plymouth just over there. People lost sons and husbands and fathers, and they did this because they wanted freedom.ā€

Has she lost her mind?

Brexit is nothing like World War Two.

In that conflict, the UK was fighting for its existence against a genuinely evil world military power that wanted to destroy our way of life altogether, along with a large proportion of our population.

Brexit is about decoupling from an alliance with a bloc of European countries with whom a significant proportion of our population no longer feels an affinity. It isn’t a life-or-death situation.

Not only that, but the hardship that Ms Widdecombe predicts for the UK would beĀ voluntary. And there’s no justification for it.

She is trying to invoke some kind of Churchillian spirit – steadfastness in adversity – that simply doesn’t fit the situation.

Brexit will hugely disadvantage a large proportion of the population – specifically, those who are not super-rich – many of whom have been manipulated into supporting it by the super-rich people who control the media.

And by super-rich career politicians like Ms Widdecombe.

The people of the UK need to be aware that any hardship caused by Brexit has nothing to do with the spirit of World War Two.

It has everything to do with the stupidity of people who were told they would be better off – and believed the lie.

Rats leaving the sinking ship: As Theresa May’s ratings plummet, Tories are scuttling to other parties

She’s out: Ann Widdecombe has had enough of Theresa May’s Tory Party and has taken a lurch to the far-right Brexit Party formed by Nigel Farage.

Ann Widdecombe has become the latest person to quit the Conservative Party – this time to stand as a candidate for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party in the European Parliament elections next month.

She made her announcement on the day Theresa May’s approval ratings among members of her party were found to have sunk to an all-time low.

Writing in theĀ Express, the former Prisons Minister whose chief contribution to UK culture was a comedy appearance onĀ Strictly Come Dancing stabbed her former leader in the back: “Alas, a hopelessly inadequate prime minister, a gloating and determined EU and a parliament ready to dismiss the people as ignorant have combined to thwart our escape from foreign domination.”

Her words seem to reflect the findings of the latest survey of Tory Party members on the ConservativeHome blog site, which puts Mrs May’s rating even lower than that of Transport Secretary Chris “Failing” Grayling:

The commentary states: “The prime minister is bearing particular blame from party members ā€“ both, one suspects, for herĀ Brexitfailure in particular and for the more general problems her continued leadership brings with it.

“So far as I can see this is the worst rating awarded to any Conservative ever in this question.”

With an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Conservative Party on the way, at which a vote of “no confidence” in Mrs May is likely to be voted through, it seems the worst prime minister in UK history is finally about to be tweezered out of 10 Downing Street.

Be assured her Tory replacement will be even worse.
