The Brexit Party started its term in the European Parliament as we all expected, when its members turned their backs on the chamber during a performance of the EU’s anthem, Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’.
Now Ann Widdecombe has increased the damage to the UK’s reputation by comparing leaving the EU with slaves being freed:
not sure we're ever going to be able to apologise enough for letting these reactionary muppets loose in public šØpic.twitter.com/P7uB0dceHu

“Reactionary muppets” is a mild response.
Still reeling from Ann Widdecombeās revelation that slaves got paid, enjoyed freedom of movement & had the vote. This changes everything.

In fact, it is a grossly offensive claim:
Anne Widdecombe just compared Britain leaving the EU to "slaves" rising up "against their owners".
It is impossible to explain how offensive and ahistorical it is for you to equate my ancestors tearing off their chains with your small-minded nationalist project. Shame on you. https://t.co/wZVCziXWVM

Guy Verhofstadt’s response was appropriate:
Nigel Farage facing some stiff competition as chief clown of the Brexit Party in the @Europarl_EN. By the way, when Widdecombe talks about ācolonies liberating themselves from their empiresā, is she really referring to the American Revolution of 1776? https://t.co/KNtQ7GjaY3

A “clown” indeed.
But she and her party have made the whole of the UK into a laughing-stock.
