Stupidity: Israel lobbyists attack University Challenge over ‘anti-Semitic octopus’

Not anti-Semitic: sometimes a blue octopus is just a stuffed toy, and sometimes coloured clothes are just coloured clothes.

They have rightly been roasted for this.

After contestants from Christchurch College, Oxford, appeared on the BBC’s University Challenge quiz show with a stuffed toy octopus as their mascot, pro-Israel activists took to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to denounce them and the show, claiming it was an anti-Semitic trope.

Some also claimed that one of the contestants, Melika Gorgianeh, appeared to be wearing the colours of the Palestinian flag – until they had it pointed out to them that her clothes were not in the correct colours and any similarity was nothing more than a coincidence.

We all learned last month that the octopus (now they’re saying it has to be blue, but who cares?) is an obscure anti-Semitic canard, after Greta Thunberg was forced to remove a photo from her ‘X’ timeline.

Calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, she was pictured with a blue octopus that happened to be a common tool used by neurodivergent people to express their feelings. In the image, it was showing sadness.

The backlash against the hysterical “anti-Semitism” screamers has been encouraging. Let’s have a look.

Some responses were less tolerant but more incisive:

Considering the fact that Israel has been committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza strip, with a response to – yes – a terrorist atrocity that has been hugely disproportionate to the hurt that country received, it is not only astronomically stupid for its supporters to claim anti-Semitic tropes are turning up in places like this; it is also astonishingly offensive.

To those of you committing these offenses, This Writer can only say: clam up. You are not helping your cause. You are making yourselves, and Israel, look stupid, small-minded, bigoted and bloodthirsty.

To everybody who is being exposed to these offenses on a daily basis, my suggestion is: block these people. Remove them from your lives. De-legitimise and de-platform them. And when they squeal (because they will), remind them that it is the consequence of their own stupidity.

Greta Thunberg’s support octopus is not an anti-Semitic trope

This Writer is amazed that we’ve reached a point where I have to write headlines like the above, but for clarity here is the story in a nutshell:

I had to cast around for information about this and found an article in Rolling Stone that corresponds with my own thoughts about this – from the start. It states:

TWO WEEKS INTO the horrific war between Israel and Hamas, the state of online discourse has descended from “generally bad and stupid” to “unfathomably dumb and borderline dangerous.” Case in point: recent allegations that environmental activist Greta Thunberg, after posting a “Stand with Gaza” sign and demanding a ceasefire, was actually posting a Nazi dogwhistle. Later, the official X account for the Israeli government piled on, too.

On Friday, Thunberg posted a photo on social media of her holding a “Stand with Gaza” sign accompanied by other activists holding similar pro-Palestinian messaging. The caption on her post on X read, “Today we strike in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. The world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected.” In the original post, she was seen with a light-blue stuffed octopus on her shoulder.

Predictably, many criticized her post for failing to condemn the terrorist group Hamas’s Oct. 7 surprise on Israel, which left at least 1,400 people dead, many of whom were civilians. Perhaps less predictably, however, others focused on the octopus, interpreting it to be a kraken, a mythical, multi-tentacled sea beast that was occasionally used in Nazi iconography.

“What does the Kraken next to you on the couch mean @GretaThunberg?,” one account with more than 1,000 retweets wrote. “The Kraken was, and is, a well-known sign of the Nazis for the anti-semitic term international finance judaism.”

In a follow-up tweet, Thunberg, who is autistic, clarified that the plush octopus on her shoulder was not a reference to a (frankly, somewhat historically obscure) anti-Semitic canard, but to a common toy used by neurodivergent people to express their feelings. “It has come to my knowledge that the stuffed animal shown in my earlier post can be interpreted as a symbol for antisemitism, which I was completely unaware of,” she wrote. “The toy in the picture is a tool often used by autistic people as a way to communicate feelings. We are of course against any type of discrimination, and condemn antisemitism in all forms and shapes. This is non-negotiable. That is why I deleted the last post.”

This explanation did not, however, prevent the state of Israel’s official Twitter account from calling out Thunberg for her post. “@GretaThunberg, Hamas doesn’t use sustainable materials for their rockets which have BUTCHERED innocent Israelis,” the post reads. “The victims of the Hamas massacre could have been your friends. Speak up.” The post contained images of missing Israelis such asAgam Berger, Nik Beizer, and Roni Eshel, who are all 19.

Of course, Thunberg was not making a point about whether Hamas’s munitions manufacturing practices are green-compliant; she was calling for a ceasefire to prevent more people from being killed, a position that is shared by many peace groups all over the world.

The idiocy of the attack on Ms Thunberg is perfectly encapsulated in the second of the following two ‘X’ posts:

Yes indeed. I await the Israeli government’s attack on that energy firm for its anti-Semitic iconography. Or is it a case of an octopus being just an octopus because political opportunists can’t get a headline out of it?

Right-wing news channel falsely accuses Jewish cartoonist of making anti-Semitic cartoon

Michael Rosen: He’s Jewish but has previously been accused of anti-Semitism over his support for Jeremy Corbyn. Now he has been accused of anti-Semitism on an entirely false premise.

We seem to be living in an age of accusing Jewish people of being anti-Semitic.

It’s utter insanity – this time perpetrated by right-wing current affairs channel GB News against Jewish poet and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen.

It seems GB News presenter Katherine Forster accidentally attributed a cartoon in The Guardian to Mr Rosen, when it was actually by Martin Rowson.

Unfortunately for all concerned, this particular cartoon featured a depiction of recently-resigned BBC Chairman Richard Sharp – who is Jewish – with a box marked Goldman Sachs, where he used to work, that contained what appeared to be a puppet of the current prime minister Rishi Sunak, an animal that looks like a squid and a CV – while Boris Johnson, on a high pile of an unidentifiable substance (the Independent seems to have reckoned money) calls out encouragingly to him.

The cartoon has been described as having “antisemitic imagery” such as “outsized, grotesque features” alongside “money and power”.

Mr Rowson has apologised profusely for the image, as reported in The Independent:

“Satirists, even though largely licenced to speak the unspeakable in liberal democracies, are no more immune to f****** things up than anyone else, which is what I did here.

“I know Richard Sharp is Jewish; actually, while we’re collecting networks of cronyism, I was at school with him, though I doubt he remembers me.

“His Jewishness never crossed my mind as I drew him as it’s wholly irrelevant to the story or his actions, and it played no conscious role in how I twisted his features according to the standard cartooning playbook.”

The Guardian has also published an apology on Twitter:

And the cartoon has indeed been removed.

GB News seems to have been more reticent about apologising for its own transgression.

Mr Rosen contacted the channel – via Twitter – at 4pm on Saturday, and requested a response detailing what it proposed to do about the error:

He repeated his request almost a quarter of an hour later:

From the tweet that follows, it seems GB News deleted its tweeted clip showing discussion of the cartoon, but not before it had been viewed 79,000 times.

At around 5pm, Ms Forster tweeted an apology to Mr Rosen and said the tweet had been removed. He responded with gratitude for her words, and with a statement crystallising his own view – that GB News should broadcast a correction along with its own apology:

He had already requested a correction by the time he had responded to Ms Forster:

By now, his supporters were making suggestions of their own. Mr Rosen, in the spirit of fairness, said he was waiting for GB News to respond:

Then he even put up a suggested wording:

That was at 5.36pm, Saturday, April 29. I’ve seen no apology/correction from GB News – although it has published a story about The Guardian‘s apology for the cartoon.

That piece does not mention or apologise for the broadcast comments about Martin Rowson.

This Site has contacted GB News to find out what the channel intends to do – if anything.

If no apology is forthcoming, it will be up to Mr Rosen to decide whether to take the matter further.

#Amnesty falsely labelled #antisemitic over report on #IsraeliApartheid

Israeli apartheid: this barrier separates Israelis from Palestinians, who are treated as a lower class of human being by the government of Israel.

There is no way that Amnesty International is an anti-Semitic organisation. It simply is not possible when one considers the composition and purpose of that organisation.

The world’s largest human rights organisation, it has just published a report labelling Israel as an apartheid nation and demanding change:

You can read the full report by following the link at the bottom of this article. It is sensible and balanced.

But when UK-based organisations that claim to represent British Jews caught sight of it, they made fools of themselves by denouncing Amnesty:

The joint statement says:

“The report is completely biased and applies standards to Israel that are not applied to any other country.”

A lie.

“The emotive term “apartheid” against Israel is a preposterous slur.”

Another lie. Israeli apartheid is well-documented – not least in the Amnesty video that appears above.

“Despite AI UK’s claim to recognise the Jewish claim to self-determination… it does not support that right.”

A lie. Amnesty does not suggest that Jews should not have that right.

“It chooses to focus on demonising the one Jewish state, holding it to clear double standards.”

A lie. Amnesty’s report attempts to hold Israel to the same standards as any other nation.

“The situation for the Palestinian people is indeed distressing; this will not be alleviated by destroying Israel.”

There is nothing in the Amnesty report that even remotely suggests dismantling Israel.

“This is a bad faith report hostile to the very concept of Israel.”

I think we can all see who is acting in bad faith!

Like all controversial acts, the Amnesty report has attracted detractors (who follow the BoD/JLC attack line) and supporters. Let’s focus on the supporters because they are right:

 

And if it is right to support Amnesty, then it is also right to criticise the BoD and the JLC:

 

The response by the Bod and the JLC has also led to another conclusion:

It’s a fair point, which leads to a further issue: Keir Starmer’s support for apartheid Israel.

We shouldn’t hold our collective breath waiting for a response. Starmer is a coward and will run away from a challenge like this.

While we do wait, we can all read the Amnesty report.

This Writer was on TV last night – albeit TV on the internet.

I was on a programme set up to discuss the new documentary Reaching Over The Noise: Is Labour Really Antisemitic? that was made to counter the false claims made in a BBC Panorama programme a little more than two years ago (at the time of writing).

If you didn’t see it, here it is:

I have to say I was very impressed with the easy wit of Jason Cridland, of Dorset Eye. I wish I could think up genuinely funny – yet pertinent – comments on the spur of the moment like that.

I do tend to take issue with one of the things he said, though. On the definition of anti-Semitism, he put forward the view that people with power and influence define the terms of debate. I think he was referring to the reliance on the IHRA working definition of A/S that is often used to demonise the innocent.

There is certainly truth in that, but I tend to think that ordinary people, looking for an accurate definition, are more likely to go to a source they know they can trust – like a dictionary.

At last, it’s out! Independent documentary debunks Panorama over Labour anti-Semitism

It’s taken years but at last a group of independent media outlets – and yes, This Site had a hand in it – have released a documentary debunking claims by the BBC’s Panorama that the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn was anti-Semitic.

And it is still topical, three years after the Panorama attack piece was aired.

In the Panorama programme, interviewees alleged that The Labour Party is institutionally antisemitic. After Labour, led by Jeremy Corbyn, strenuously denied the claims, these people sued – and new leader Keir Starmer paid them a six-figure sum, despite having been told the party could win if it mounted a defence.

If you watch the new documentary, Reaching Over The Noise: Is Labour Really Antisemitic, you may easily come to the conclusion that Starmer’s advisers were right – and Starmer was wrong.

The new documentary takes a hard look at the allegations in Panorama, examines whether they were really justified, and comes up with an honest answer.

It balances the Panorama piece by interviewing British Jews who approved of Jeremy Corbyn and his leadership of the Labour Party – and revealing the abuse they have suffered as a result.

It examines the individuals whose testimony formed the backbone of Panorama – were they entirely honest or did they have a shared interest in putting forward a particular interpretation of events?

And it asks whether the narrative put forward by the BBC documentary was the whole story – or missed out vital information.

The verdict? Well…

Non-Labour ‘Labour Against Anti-Semitism’ boss in anti-Semitic attack on former Children’s Laureate

Anti-Semitic: and this tweet was published by a director of Labour Against Anti-Semitism (who isn’t a member of the Labour Party). Credibility blown?

When it all falls apart for so-called anti-Semitism crusaders, it seems to fall apart badly.

Peter Newbon is a director of Labour Against Anti-Semitism (LAAS), despite not being a member of the Labour Party (it would be interesting to find out if he has any other political affiliations).

Today, May 19, he tweeted an image of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn reading Jewish former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen’s book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt to a group of children, with the image altered so the book appears to be the anti-Semitic text The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

The caption was: “‘Oh no! A J-… er, I mean a ZIONIST! A nasty, horrible Zionist! We can’t go over him, we can’t go under him, we’ll have to make an effigy…'”

This is clearly an anti-Semitic message, linking all Jewish people with a racist ideology in what appears to be an attempt to “normalise” Zionism along the lines of Robert Jenrick’s “Anti-Zionism is antisemitism” nonsense.

Now, serious questions are being asked about Labour Against Anti-Semitism, and Newbon’s university job also appears to be at risk.

Questions are even being asked of the Labour Party, whose leaders have signalled support for LAAS on many occasions:

Let’s all keep a close eye on this one.

I think some very nasty people have a lot of explaining to do.

Gaza conflict provokes the weak-minded to assault the innocent

What a paradox: While the Jewish state of Israel is criticised for treating Palestinian Muslims the way Hitler’s Germany treated them, history is repeating itself for British Jews who are being targeted for exactly the same treatment.

Gaza means Jews across the world may now be perceived as both perpetrators and victims.

Antisemitic attacks in the UK were up 42 per cent on the previous six months in July, because idiots can’t tell the difference between citizens of Israel and British Jews.

Attacks on Jewish people in the UK between January and June had already risen by 36 per cent.

Undoubtedly the increase in hate crime, described by Mark Gardner of the Community Security Trust (in The Guardian) as a “wave of racist intimidation and violence”, has been fuelled by media coverage of the Israeli military action in Gaza that began in early July.

Mainstream media such as the BBC and Sky News have been criticised for one-sided reporting in favour of the Palestinian political group Hamas, and condemnation of the Israeli government has been widespread.

It is easy to understand why, when one examines the casualty figures: Almost 2,000 Palestinians have died, while the Jewish casualties number less than 100. Tens of thousands of people attended a rally in condemnation of these deaths in London yesterday (Saturday).

What has gone unnoticed – especially by the antisemitic thugs – is that Jewish communities in the UK are also “filled with grief for the people of Gaza”. As Rabbi Miriam Berger states in The Independent, “No Jew in Britain could possibly relish this loss of life.”

While she also expresses the belief that Israel needs to defend its citizens from attack, this simply shows how confused the situation has become. As this blog has stated, the conflict is a squabble over land between political organisations – Hamas and the Israeli government. Religion has very little to do with it.

British Jews are citizens of the UK, not Israel. They have nothing to do with the political process in that – foreign – country and it is clear that many of them disapprove of actions that have led to such a marked loss of life.

It is to all our shame that they have fallen foul of the kind of people who cannot distinguish fantasy from reality. These thugs would probably attack a soap actor in the street if a storyline made a villain of their character.

Demonising people who have done nothing wrong will only make a horrifying situation even worse.
