Tory councillor’s pot-shot at Corbyn is false, inappropriate and tone-deaf

At a time when Tory corruption – their insistence on following their own interests rather than those of the nation – is under the spotlight, this Conservative councillor’s attempt at diversion is in particularly poor taste.

After taxi driver David Perry averted a tragedy at Liverpool Women’s Hospital by foiling a terrorist bomb plot, Cllr Paul Nickerson tried to use it to make a bad joke about former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

He posted a Photoshopped image of Mr Corbyn laying a Remembrance wreath by the burning taxi – presumably for the terrorist.

It was a callback to the days when Mr Corbyn, as Labour leader, had been falsely accused of sympathising with terrorists. There was absolutely no truth in these smears; the former Labour leader is a pacifist.

There is truth in claims that Conservatives are corrupt.

Only yesterday – the same day Cllr Nickerson was posting his grotty attempt at ridicule, his Parliamentary colleagues were learning about the corruption practised by now-former MP Owen Paterson.

Approval of the standards commissioner’s recommendations with regard to this misbehaviour was only prevented by the intervention of filibuster king Christopher Chope.

Some might describe this as a further act of corruption.

Is Cllr Nickerson proud of MPs like these? Or was he so ashamed he tried to take some of the heat away from them? I ask merely for information.

UPDATE: Cllr Nickerson has subsequently apologised for the image. But something doesn’t ring true…

Stop lying, BBC! Starmer wasn’t heckled over his mother but for failing to support the NHS

Why do people bother to pay the licence fee when BBC News feeds them lies?

The current editor-approved attack line against socialists is that people who – rightly – heckled Keir Starmer’s speech to the Labour conference were mocking him for talking about his mother being in intensive care.

This is a lie.

See it in action in this clip in which Laura Pidcock was asked for her reaction:

Note that the false implication about Starmer’s mother isn’t fanfared – it’s just slipped into the clip to take you by surprise.

Here’s the reality of the situation:

The correct news angle would have been to ask why Starmer doesn’t support a 15 per cent pay rise for nurses if he appreciates the work they did for (among others) his own mother. Isn’t it hypocritical and insensitive of him to use his own mother in such a way?

Starmer’s speech was full of similar howlers. Top of this list is his announcement of a new organisation, Labour Friends of the Police, on the day we heard how a police officer used his powers to arrest, kidnap, rape and murder a woman, and then burned the body.

If that is the kind of friend Keir Starmer wants, then he is no friend of yours.

MPs plan to make us spend decades paying the NONEXISTENT cost of Covid-19

Money, money, money: Boris Johnson ordered the Bank of England to create all of the money that has been used to pay the costs associated with Covid-19 in the UK – in the same way that governments create money all the time. There is no debt to pay because the government never borrowed anything.

MPs are trying to fool us into thinking there is a Covid-19-related debt that will need to be paid back. Be warned: they’re lying; there isn’t.

According to the BBC:

Taxpayers will bear the costs of Covid “for decades”… MPs have said.

the PAC [Public Accounts Committee] said the taxpayer would be exposed to “significant financial risks for decades to come” with the estimated cost of the government’s measures having already hit £372bn in May.

UK government debt is now over £2.2 trillion, or about 99.7% of GDP – a rate not seen since the early 1960s. In June alone, debt interest cost £8.7bn.

In one example of future Covid costs, the PAC says taxpayers could be liable for an estimated £26 billion of bad loans, out of a total £92 billion of loans guaranteed by the government.

Shocking numbers, certainly. But here’s the thing: there is no Covid-19 debt.

Fake Labour: Starmer should know obsequious flag-waving and a haircut won’t fool voters

Fake: Jeremy Corbyn had authentic Labour policies; Keir Starmer has a flag, a haircut, and a face that looks more like Frank Spencer than Gavin Williamson’s.

A leaked internal strategy presentation suggests Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is hoping to win back voters with exaggerated patriotism, smart suits (and haircuts), and the exploitation of veterans.

There seems to be no suggestion that Starmer should try to present his hollowed-out sub-Tory party as actually standing for anything. “Labour” seems to be be nothing more than an old title that no longer has any significance at all.

The presentation itself is based on the findings of focus groups, showing that the general public no longer has any idea what – or who – Labour is supposed to represent and thinks that Starmer’s position on any subject is to sit on the fence.

And he’s considered to be the party’s “biggest positive driver”!

It seems Starmer is trying to find a way to present himself and his fake Labour as “authentic”. In short: it’s a blueprint for lying to the nation.

Obsequious flag-waving nationalism isn’t going to cut any mustard with Labour’s core voters, though – for reasons that Clive Lewis, an MP who served with the armed forces in Afghanistan, has made clear:

“It’s not patriotism; it’s Fatherland-ism. There’s a better way to build social cohesion than moving down the track of the nativist right.

“The Tory party has absorbed Ukip and now Labour appears to be absorbing the language and symbols of the Tory party.”

Now he’s crowing about his Brexit deal, will Boris Johnson be allowed to forget THIS?

Think before speaking (or publishing): Boris Johnson should account for a Tory constituency association’s apparent demand for activists to tell LIES in order to  sideline honest politicians from other parties.

Why have Tory Party members been sent an email urging them to use “dubious claims” to “crowd out genuine news” and sideline “honest” politicians?

The demands, in a Conservative Party email, indicate clear support for dishonest politicians and for fake news. Don’t they?

It seems Labour leader Keir Starmer has been mining a newsletter published to Tories on Peter Bone’s Wellingborough constituency. Bone now has some hard questions to answer!

Sadly, Starmer was unable to use the information in the newsletter to his best advantage during the last Prime Minister’s Questions of 2020 – because of his own poor track record.

After he asked whether the newsletter contained advice that Boris Johnson had taken – or had been written by Johnson, our failure of a prime minister was able to turn the tables simply by pointing out that the people of the UK would like to see any sign of an opinion at all from Starmer.

He said,

I think what the people of this country would love to hear from the right hon. and learned Gentleman in this season of good will is any kind of point of view at all on some of the key issues.

In the words of the song, “All I want for Christmas is” a view, and it would be wonderful if he could produce one.

It is a perfectly valid viewpoint about Starmer. But it does not excuse Wellingborough’s Conservatives or the contents of their newsletter.

Why did they write in praise of

Donald Trump’s use of “dubious claims”, “weaponising fake news” and using falsehoods to “crowd out” the truth.

Why did they say,

Fake news often makes headlines and crowds out genuine news. Honest politicians therefore find themselves pushed off the front pages

and then go on to urge Tories to

say the first thing that comes into your head. It’ll probably be nonsense but it knocks your opponent out of his stride and takes away his headline

in a clear exhortation for Tories to dishonestly create “fake news” stories?

And will Johnson ever be bothered to answer these questions?

Matt Hancock’s amateur theatrics mock the commencement of Covid vaccinations

Matt Hancock: this would have been a more honest reaction to a working-class person getting the Covid vaccination.

If you’ve never agreed with Kerry-Anne Mendoza before, you may agree with this:

What an absolute disgrace.

Matt Hancock tried to pretend he was tearing up at the sight of a gentleman named William Shakespeare (no kidding; I think they must have searched him out for the photo opportunity) being among the first to get the new Covid-19 vaccination.

Instead he made it seem that he was laughing at us all.

That’s a dangerous thing for a government minister to do, after presiding over tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths due to poor preparation and tens of thousands more after giving away billions of pounds to fellow Conservatives who claimed they were running companies that could help but turned out to be liars in expensive suits.

Still, some of us managed to laugh at him…

Meanwhile, 616 more people were reported to have died of the virus yesterday, meaning the death rate has maintained its level of more than 600 per day, despite Hancock’s (claimed) efforts to get it down. His English lockdown achieved nothing.

The total number of cases increased by 12,282 – down slightly from 14,718 cases recorded on Monday.

The total number of people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus is now 62,033 (according to the new recording system. The actual number of Covid-19-related deaths is much higher).

The total number of people to test positive for the virus in the last seven days has reached 107,158.

And since the pandemic started, there have been 1,750,241 confirmed Covid-19 infections in the UK.

It has now been revealed that London emerged from Boris Johnson’s second lockdown with more Covid-19 cases than when it started, with rates still rising across three quarters of the city’s 32 boroughs in the week to 3 December.

Public Health England data shows that there were 174.1 infections per 100,000 London residents in the seven days to 3 December – up from 154.5 a week earlier.

Analysis by The Independent found this figure to be higher than dozens of areas in Tier 3, including Middlesbrough (170), Manchester (166), Nottingham (152), Leeds (150), Bristol (141) and Newcastle-upon-Tyne (128).

London is in Tier 2.

But that’s as much of an amateur theatrical show as Hancock’s fake tears.

Calm down everyone! Jacob Rees-Mogg HASN’T been quoting Rolf Harris

Rees-Mogg: he wanted to be identified with patriotism but ended up being linked with a paedophile instead. That’s what he gets for trying to be cleverer-than-thou.

It speaks volumes about the Johnson government that the public will readily believe that one of its senior members will happily identify with a convicted paedophile.

Today, the following tweet appeared – apparently from Boris Johnson’s Leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg:

It appeared that Rees-Mogg was quoting The Court of King Caractacus – which was a well-known song by disgraced broadcaster/convicted paedophile Rolf Harris.

The tweet was met with a range of reactions, from outrage…

… to mockery…

… to humour:

In fact, the tweet was a fake. It was a satirical response to a comment that Rees-Mogg did make, in his usual “I’m better-educated than the rest of you” way:

He was quoting The British Grenadiers, by the way, which is a traditional song – we don’t know who wrote the lyrics. Rees-Mogg wanted to be associated with the heroism and patriotism that the song evokes.

The spoof tweet stole his thunder by associating him with a paedophile instead.

In fairness, it has now been fully acknowledged as a spoof by its author:

Presumably Davey Jones reckons his work here is done. I think he may be right!

If Keir Starmer thinks he’s calming the rage over Labour anti-Semitism, he’s only made it worse

Keir Starmer: he’s no leader – not even a fake military one, as depicted in this mock-up.

It is worth pointing out, on the day Keir Starmer paid out around £600,000 and apologised to so-called anti-Semitism “whistleblowers”, that his actions are only perpetuating the saga – prolonging the agony.

Take his sacking of Rebecca Long-Bailey from the Labour front bench a few weeks ago: on Monday, Labour Party members, supported by Salford TUC, made a formal complaint – I take it to the party’s National Executive Committee – about Starmer’s conduct.

The group points out that Ms Long-Bailey’s sacking on the pretext of her having shared a link to an interview with a constituent who shared an “anti-Semitic conspiracy theory” is wrong, for these reasons:

  • Maxine Peake’s statement – that US police learned from Israeli operatives the method of killing people (like George Floyd) by exerting pressure on their necks with a knee – may well be accurate; there is evidence available to that effect.
  • There are unimpeachable arguments that Ms Peake’s statement was not anti-Semitic in any case.

The group wants an appropriate and thorough investigation of whether Starmer’s publicly-stated reason for sacking Ms Long-Bailey was accurate, proportionate and fair.

If it was not, then the group wants a public statement to that effect, including that the party will always challenge unfair dismissal in whatever context; an apology to Ms Long-Bailey; and her reinstatement to her former shadow cabinet post – or an appropriately-substantial such post – at the earliest opportunity.

It is doubtful that Labour under Starmer is capable of carrying out an appropriate and thorough investigation of anything. But it will be interesting to see how the party’s leaders respond.

And this is just the tip of an ever-growing iceberg. Already challenges are being prepared against the use of party members’ subscription money to pay off the group who appeared on Panorama to denounce Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour leadership.

And concerns that Starmer is about to remove the Labour whip from Jeremy Corbyn are provoking a strong response.

Party members are already demanding to know why their membership money is being used in such a perverse way, and (so far) Starmer has been unable to come up with a response.

It seems clear that if he continues to use party money to fund unfounded attacks on members, he is likely to face a very large rebellion by grassroots members.

He came on as the blazing hope for the Labour Party when he was elected in April.

If he doesn’t want to drop out as a damp squib after only three months (and change) as leader, he’d better rethink his approach double-quick.

Firms that falsified thousands of benefit assessments set to get contracts to falsify thousands more

With apologies to the makers of The Simpsons.

Can anyone think of a single rational explanation for the plan to renew the contracts for Atos and Capita to carry out assessments of sickness and disability benefit claims?

Between them, over the last two years, these firms deliberately falsified around 7,300 claims in order to deny disabled people vital payments, forcing them towards poverty and the worsening of their conditions.

Who knows how many of these people have been induced to end their own lives as a result of this discrimination?

But instead of penalising the perpetrators by removing their contracts, the Tories are planning to pay them more than £1 billion to continue their persecution for three more years after their current contract runs out in 2021.

Who knows how many more claims they’ll be able to falsify, doctor or otherwise fake in that time? How many deserving people they’ll drive to poverty? How many will die?
