Boris Johnson’s ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown ignores the science YET AGAIN and the death toll could be huge

Mess: Johnson’s plan to ease lockdown is as muddled as his hair. Even with 80 per cent vaccine efficacy, half the population will still be vulnerable to infection.

Scientists have warned that Boris Johnson’s plan to end lockdown restrictions will cause a huge increase in Covid-19 hospitalisations – even in the most optimistic scenarios.

So much for “following the science”, eh?

It seems that

The government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) [said] tens of thousands more people can be expected to die from Covid because vaccines will not provide complete protection against the disease, and not everyone will have the jabs.

All scenarios led to a resurgence of cases because so many vulnerable people remained unprotected, even with high vaccine coverage.

Johnson’s plan is a bespoke model that does not correspond with any of the SAGE scenarios – but its closest equivalent, scenario three, predicts a resurgence of Covid-19 in the UK around September.

At yesterday’s press briefing on the government’s plans, chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, who is said to have shares in a pharmaceutical company that was working on a vaccine, warned that even with 80 per cent efficacy, half the population would still be at risk from the disease.

He said a cautious step-by-step process, with pauses of four or five weeks between each to monitor the impact, was the right way to go.

It seems strange, then, that the Johnson plan will reopen all English schools on March 8.

Scientific modellers predict that this will drive the infection rate up by between 10 and 50 per cent – negating the reductions of the current lockdown and vaccinations.

They said a limited reopening, possibly starting with primary schools, was a far better option and would allow scientists to assess the impact on infections within the community.

Johnson has ignored this good advice and intends to steamroll his easements through – as he did last year.

We all know how that turned out. Why are you letting him do it to you again?

Covid-19: Worst-yet infection & death rates; hospitals breaking… & Johnson is pinning all his hopes on vaccines?

Boris Johnson: he has relied on mindless optimism and wishful thinking, and he has failed. The NHS in London is at the point of collapse and it is his fault.

The UK has recorded 1,325 Covid-19 deaths and 68,053 daily cases – the highest level of both in a single day.

Total – official – deaths are nearly up to 80,000, and nearly three million infections are known to have happened in the UK – almost one-twentieth of the population.

Meanwhile London Mayor Sadiq Khan has declared a major incident as the number of Covid cases in the capital’s hospitals hit “critical” levels.

He said the virus in London is now “out of control” and the NHS is “on the cusp of being overwhelmed” with 7,000 Covid patients in hospital – almost 2,000 more than the first peak last April – and almost 1,000 on ventilators.

The UK now has more Covid-19 cases per head of population than any other nation in the world.

This Writer has yet to see evidence that the Nightingale hospitals have been pressed into service, though.

There is good news: apparently the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is effective against the new variants of Covid-19 – both from the UK and South Africa.

Another vaccine has been approved by the UK’s regulator – made by Moderna – but the 17 million doses on order won’t arrive until March.

And a fourth – single-dose – vaccine by the Belgian arm of Johnson & Johnson could be approved in early February.

Finally, it seems two arthritis drugs may be able to save the lives of Covid patients, also.

But the speed at which the emergency has fallen out of control shows how ill-advised Boris Johnson has been in his strategy. He has relied on wishful thinking, and it has let him down.

His current plan is to put all his eggs in one basket and rely on the vaccination programme – which is stuttering due to supply issues and a failure to inoculate the designated number of people on time.

Only days ago he was promising an early release from lockdown with the creation of “mega-vaccination” centres in the Nightingale hospitals (indicating we may finally get some use out of them).

It is sheer, boneheaded stupidity.

All the way down the line he has adhered to a slack-jawed, mindless optimism. He thought Covid-19 was just a touch of flu – and was proved wrong. He thought it would be all right to let the infection run rampant through the population until herd immunity was established – wrong again. He thought it was okay to sell off personal protective equipment before the pandemic arrived, even though he knew it was coming.

He thought ventilators wouldn’t be needed.

He thought lockdown didn’t have to last very long.

He thought he could send people back to work and they wouldn’t catch or spread the disease.

He thought he could send children back to school and they wouldn’t catch or spread the disease.

He thought it would be okay to prioritise the economy – his friends’ bank balances – above our lives.

And he forced his opinions on the rest of us.

And 80,000 people are dead.

And three million people have been infected.

And millions of people will suffer the lasting effects for a long time to come.

And the National Health Service is at the point of collapse – exactly as he and everyone else in the Conservative government were told after Operation Cygnus in 2016.

He thought it would be okay to let that happen.

Well, if you live in London, with your health service in critical condition, I’d like to know: do you think it’s okay? I’m especially keen to hear from people who voted Conservative.

Remember: Johnson knew Covid-19 was coming.

He knew what he needed to do, and didn’t do it.

He knew it was likely to mutate, and ignored that.

And that’s how we got where we are.

UK daily Covid cases top 60,000 for first time – along with 830 deaths (Vox Political scrapbook)

The number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the UK has increased by 60,916 – and another 830 people have died, government figures show.

This is the highest daily total of Covid-19 cases ever recorded in the UK and the first time the number has breached 60,000.

The number of deaths reported today appears to be a large jump, although Scotland did not report its deaths yesterday and there would have been a lag in reporting after the weekend.

Nearly 1,000 deaths in a single day and Johnson STILL WON’T CLOSE SCHOOLS!

Boris Johnson: he’s wearing the expression he would probably have if anybody asked him to do a photo opportunity in a school during term time in the middle of the Covid-19 crisis.

What is the matter with Boris Johnson?

Does he have some homicidal – genocidal – desire to kill off as much of the older generation as possible, through the agency of the younger?

That seems the only explanation for his determination to keep schools open, denying the science that says schools are the most common vector for transmission of Covid-19 and that they should close for the foreseeable future.

Not yet…

We certainly will – especially in the light of today’s (December 30) frankly horrifying infection and death statistics:

The situation is doubly contradictory as Boris Johnson has decided to delay MPs’ return to Parliament, citing concerns over safety:

Sadly, it seems the general public will have no help from Labour’s non-opposition leader Keir Starmer, who backs Boris Johnson up to the hilt on this matter.

So much for his “forensic” attitude!

We are left in a bizarrely contradictory situation:

Meanwhile the clock is ticking:

How many people have to die before Johnson sees sense – and supports the science, as he keeps claiming?

Highest ever number of new Covid-19 infections recorded in the UK in a single day

Overloaded: Boris Johnson and the Tories before him de-funded the National Health Service and stripped it of its ability to fight pandemic viruses, knowing that only the poor would suffer if a crisis arose. That is exactly what has happened.

The authorities are desperate to say it’s not as extreme as it looks, as testing has increased significantly, meaning more infections are being discovered than before.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t as bad as it looks. 41,385 new infections in a single day is an astonishing amount.

And of course, not everybody is being tested every day, so undoubtedly more infections are being missed.

The number of new deaths – 357 – is a significant decrease on the highs of more than 600. It is still equivalent to more than two disasters such as plane or train crashes, though.

The fall in the number of deaths may be at least a hint that vaccination is starting to work.

But the toll on our hospitals has reached a new high point – at a time when the National Health Service is at its lowest ebb in years due to more than a decade of Conservative underfunding and the loss of staff who have been turned away by Tory underpayment policies.

Hospitals have been told to free up every possible bed – meaning other treatments and procedures will be delayed (again) – to make way for an influx of very sick patients. This increase has been worsened by the new strain of the virus and Boris Johnson’s decision to delay taking any action over it for almost four whole months.

In a six-page letter to NHS care providers on 23 December, health service chiefs said:

“With Covid-19 inpatient numbers rising in almost all parts of the country, and the new risk presented by the variant strain of the virus, you should continue to plan on the basis that we will remain in a level four incident for at least the rest of this financial year and NHS trusts should continue to safely mobilise all of the available surge capacity over the coming weeks.”

Part of the problem is that, despite the Conservative government’s insistence that the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is now available, it has been denied to almost two-thirds of medics who have asked for it:

A new survey reveals that almost two-thirds of medics who responded to it have still not had the vaccine, half believe its delivery to the NHS frontline has been “ad hoc” and a third have no idea when they will be offered it.

Not only that, but hospitals are suffering their own individual emergencies, like Queen Elizabeth Hospital in London, which had to divert emergency patients to other hospitals because excessive demand by Covid-19 sufferers had caused a shortage of oxygen.

It is the latest in a string of London hospitals to declare major incidents in the past 10 days.

It’s a cascade.

Patients with other conditions are turned away because scant resources have been diverted to handle Covid-19, because Boris Johnson couldn’t be bothered to take the right precautions at the right time, Tory leaders before him systematically stripped the UK of its ability to handle virus, and long-term Conservative policy has been to deny resources to the NHS in order to fool the public into thinking a private health service would be better.

You can see as easily as I can that responsibility lies with a single group: the Conservatives.

It doesn’t change the fact that the UK faces a very clear and pressing crisis.

This Writer would urge everybody with the necessary abilities to do everything they can to help.

But whatever happens, don’t let the Tories take the credit for it.

Covid-19 hasn’t gone away just because we have a vaccine – the death toll is as high as ever

The English lockdown turned out to be no good at all – didn’t it?

Daily Covid-19 statistics show another 16,578 cases today (December 10), with 533 deaths.

That means the number of deaths is higher than when England went into its second lockdown at the beginning of November.

The number of cases has fallen, but while it is half the peak (33,470, November 12), the number of deaths is comparable.

Much of the problem is the rampant corruption in Boris Johnson’s government, that has handed appointments to the unqualified and contracts to the incapable:

Meanwhile it has been revealed that a doctor who had studied coronaviruses like Covid-19 for 30 years was not contacted by the government when the pandemic began.

Dr David Matthews was part of the only UK team working on human coronaviruses when Covid-19 first surfaced in China.

Despite his expertise, the virologist said his advice was not sought – and he wasn’t invited to join the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE).

The response to the pandemic remains a national scandal. That won’t change, just because there’s a vaccine now.

And the British public – those who’ve had it so far – has been markedly underwhelmed by the jab.

After all the fuss about vaccinations starting, a 91-year-old man became a sudden celebrity – for being completely unimpressed.

Londoner Martin Kenyon said it was “very unexciting”.

He added: “I hope I’m not going to get the bloody bug now. I don’t intend to have it because I’ve got granddaughters. I intend to live a long time to enjoy their lives.”

And he said: “There’s no point in dying now when I’ve lived this long,”

Like a true Brit, he complained about the food, which he described as “a rather nasty lunch”.

One group that may be delighted to get the jab – but may have to wait a while to receive it – is students.

The question is: will they all have lost their minds by the time they get their freedom back?

Students have been talking about the mental health impact of the pandemic and you can read their stories here.

When they get out, they won’t be able to go far: Covid has collided with Brexit with the announcement that, from January 1, UK holidaymakers will be subject to the same travel rules as anybody else outside the European Union – meaning we won’t be allowed into the EU on holiday under current pandemic-related travel restrictions.

Non-essential travel is allowed from a small group of countries with lower levels of Covid cases including Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. There are no plans to allow the UK – whose infection rates have been a national embarrassment, if not disaster, since March.

50,000 dead overall, 33,000 infections IN ONE DAY – and the news is all about Dominic Cummings

Dominic Cummings: he wouldn’t go for a good reason when this shot was taken in the summer, but if the possibility of him quitting distracts us from the UK’s coronavirus horror show, it suddenly becomes headline news.

It seems there is a national media agenda to pull the wool over our eyes.

Covid-19 reached a new height in the UK yesterday. The country became the first in Europe to record more than 50,000 official (remember that) deaths…

(Oh, and by the way…)

Those official figures also show that 33,470 new cases of the virus were recorded, compared with 22,950 on Wednesday…

And the number of fatalities in a single day has reached 595:

Meanwhile the test-and-trace fiasco continues unabated:

And plans to immunise us all against Covid, using the new vaccine, mean some of us won’t get our shots for another 36 years:

And what’s the headline on the news?

What’s going on? Why are the news media blithering about soap-opera shenanigans in Downing Street rather than telling us what we need to know about the virus that is raging through the UK like wildfire?

(I think he means the pain of the victims. Spellchecker can be a burden.)

The question is, are we all being distracted from the horror of the virus and the failure to cope with it by Boris Johnson and his fellow incompetents?

If so, it isn’t working.

Do they really think we’re so stupid we haven’t realised what is happening on our own streets?

School Covid-19 infections see record one-day rise. The Tories will cause more deaths because there is no cure for stupidity

Rampant: the Covid-19 virus is once again on the loose across the UK because the Tories haven’t just lost control; they’ve deliberately thrown it away.

Wow. Boris Johnson and his cronies promised you and your kids would be perfectly safe if you sent them back to school.

And what happened?

It was the largest one-day record for the number of schools infected.

Somehow, I doubt it will all be over by Christmas.

So does Eoin Clarke, who runs the Tory Fibs Twitter feed. He laid out his own concerns about the current Tory policies in a thread that I have no qualms about reproducing here, so you can experience the depth of the Johnson government’s failure here:

This Writer has been saying much the same – especially about the concentration on the economy causing more damage in the long run.

Sadly, there no way to stop Johnson, Hancock and the other incompetents from continuing on their course to disaster – for a very simple reason:

There is no cure for stupidity.

Weekend Covid-19 infections leap to biggest ever figure after Dido Harding’s cowboys miss 16,000

The number of – recorded – Covid-19 infections in the UK leapt up massively over the weekend after it was admitted that Dido Harding and her mob at Serco Test And Trace failed to report nearly 16,000 between September 25 and October 2.

The 15,841 cases were then added to Saturday’s (October 3) and Sunday’s (October 4) figures to give (fabricated) totals for those days of 12,872 cases and 22,961 respectively.

And we were upset when the totals leapt to 6,000!

Cynically, the government left it to Public Health England – the nationalised NHS organisation – to report the failings, presumably in the hope that it would take all the blame before it fades out of existence to be replaced by a privatised “National Institute of Health Protection” run by… Dido Harding.

The writing is on the wall, and it says, “Abandon hope, all ye who trust in these.”

Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth tried to pin the fiasco on Death Secretary Matt Hancock, who does indeed have overall responsibility: “This is shambolic and people across the country will be understandably alarmed.

“Matt Hancock should come to the House of Commons on Monday to explain what on earth has happened, what impact it has had on our ability to contain this virus and what he plans to do to fix test and trace.”

But members of the public on Twitter weren’t going to let the person most directly responsible off the hook.

Here’s how this latest Tory disaster was reported there:

Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey was wheeled onto BBC Breakfast to defend the government and made a complete hash of it:

And Sky News revealed that bosses at Public Health England are not willing to accept the blame for Baroness Harding’s blunders:

They needn’t worry; we all know the score:

Yes, Tory incompetence costs lives.

But people weren’t willing to let Labour off the hook either.

After some Labour MPs finally dragged themselves into the real world by referring to the track and trace system as being run by Serco (after weeks of going along with the Tory lie that it was an NHS project), the public had this to say:

They’re not wrong.

We need better than this – from both sides of the House of Commons – or the Covid-19 disaster will be an apocalypse for the UK.

And I think that is a forlorn hope: they’re already doing the pathetic best they can.

UK records highest-ever daily number of Covid-19 infections

Rampant: the Covid-19 virus is reaching heights of infection not seen before in the UK.

So much for all the work you put in to send Covid-19 packing from March onwards.

Thanks to the bumbling incoherence of a part-time prime minister (and full-time performing monkey), and the inanities of his incompetent cronies, it was all for nothing.

On September 24 – today at the time of writing – the UK recorded its highest-ever daily number of Covid-19 infections: 6,634.

A further 40 people are reported to have died – the highest number since July 14.

It will be scant comfort to hear that researchers reckon the number of new infections is still much lower than at the height of the lockdown.

They reckon there were 100,000 new cases a day – but this only flags up Johnson’s utter incompetence; at that time he had halted all efforts at testing for the disease and tracing people who had contacted carriers.

Oh – and the number of infections in schools is still rising, too:

Put it all together and it seems the best that can be said is this:

All our efforts to beat Covid-19 in the spring have only served to worsen the annual winter NHS crisis, adding the virus to the stresses on a service that the Tories have underfunded, understaffed, and hived off to useless privately-run cowboy firms.

Have YOU donated to my crowdfunding appeal, raising funds to fight false libel claims by TV celebrities who should know better? These court cases cost a lot of money so every penny will help ensure that wealth doesn’t beat justice.
