#BorisJohnson under pressure as Cabinet colleagues demand inquiry into #NusratGhani ‘muslimness’ claim

Boris Johnson: the accusations against him are mounting up.

Now what is he going to do?

After Nusrat Ghani joined complaints against Conservative whips, saying one had told her she had been sacked as a transport minister because her “Muslimness” was making colleagues “uncomfortable”, both Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi have insisted on an investigation.

Both are themselves Muslims, although Javid is non-practising.

He tweeted the following on the subject:

And this is what Zahawi had to say about it:

Dominic Raab, as Deputy Prime Minister, said there could be no inquiry unless Ms Ghani submitted a formal complaint, which she declined to do at the time.

But Ms Ghani has now added to her original claim by saying prime minister Boris Johnson, while refusing to get involved when she was sacked, had offered her only one way of making a complaint – and it was inappropriate:

So it seems she spoke to Johnson in June 2020 about her sacking in February that year but he said he “could not get involved”.

Instead, she’s saying, he suggested she should use the internal Conservative Party complaints process – that would not be appropriate for something that happened on government business; she says she doesn’t even know whether the words spoken to her about her sacking were by a member of the Conservative Party.

This seems to be a claim that Tory chief whip Mark Spencer was mistaken when he said her claim about being sacked because of her “Muslimness” related to a conversation with him.

The new statement calls Johnson’s behaviour into question yet again: Did he misdirect Ms Ghani?

And it comes at the worst possible time for a prime minister who is under extreme pressure over his conduct regarding the now-infamous Downing Street parties that took place while the rest of us – including the Queen – were under lockdown…

… and who is already facing questions about whether Tory whips have been blackmailing MPs to prevent them from submitting letters of “no confidence” in his leadership.

With Cabinet ministers now asking hard questions, will this be the straw that finally breaks Boris Johnson?

If #Partygate #blackmail claims are false, why is this man taking them to the police?

William Wragg: he’ll soon be talking to the police about blackmail in Parliament.

The MP who claimed Tory whips were blackmailing other MPs to withhold letters of “no confidence” in Boris Johnson is taking his allegation to the police.

William Wragg reckons he has evidence that will justify a police investigation, despite claims from 10 Downing Street that it has seen no such information, and from Johnson loyalists that the scandal is nonsense.

Mr Wragg said he will see a police officer on Monday because he wanted to leave any investigation to “experts” rather than Number 10. His faith may be misplaced – consider the way the Metropolitan Police has ignored allegations that parties happened in Downing Street when officers were standing guard at the door.

Chris Bryant, chairman of the Commons Committee on Standards, said he had spoken to about a dozen Tory MPs who claimed whips threatened to withdraw funding for their constituencies, including for campaigning and infrastructure such as bypasses and schools.

He said some had alleged that Johnson himself has been doing this, describing such behaviour as “misconduct in public office”. He agreed with Mr Wragg that is was a matter for the police.

He also said the allegations seemed to be part of an erosion of standards that had been taking place over a period of years.

Nusrat Ghani would probably agree with him, although This Writer isn’t sure anybody has asked her.

She lost her job as a transport minister in a mini-reshuffle in February 2020 and has now said she was told it was because her religion – she’s a Muslim – was “making colleagues uncomfortable”.

This seems likely in a Party that has been riddled with accusations of Islamophobia for years – including allegations against Johnson.

Apparently chief whip Mark Spencer has claimed this accusation relates to him but is false.

Well…

“I had to listen to a monologue on how hard it was to define when people are being racist and that the party doesn’t have a problem and I needed to do more to defend it.

“It was very clear to me that the whips and No 10 were holding me to a higher threshold of loyalty than others because of my background and faith.”

said Ms Ghani.

I think she should join Mr Wragg’s interview with the police officer early next week.

And Mark Drakeford, Wales’s First Minister, whose Covid-19 policies have safeguarded the population here so much better than Johnson’s have in England, has said Johnson’s plan to ease ‘Plan B’ health protections (you may call them restrictions) is probably a distraction tactic.

“Everything that goes on in Whitehall and Westminster at the moment for the UK government is seen exclusively through the lens of, how does this make a difference to the efforts that are being made to shore-up the position of the prime minister,” he said.

“This is a government that at the moment is simply not capable of doing the ordinary business of government in a competent and sensible way because it is overwhelmed by the headlines that surround dreadful events that went on in Downing Street.”

He also said:

“The prime minister is someone who’s been sacked from two previous jobs for not telling the truth.

“I think The Times wrote an editorial on the eve of the December 2019 election pointing to the many flaws in the prime minister’s record and in many ways, I think what you see is his history catching up with him.”

There’s a lot of accuracy in that, I reckon.

Even if he slithers out of the Partygate accusations, it seems Johnson may be sunk by his efforts to avoid being backstabbed by his own MPs.

Hypocrisy of UK MPs sanctioned for criticising China human rights abuses

Hypocrite: Iain Duncan Smith oversaw the deaths of thousands of unemployed, sick and disabled people who were victimised by his ‘reforms’ to the UK’s benefit system. How dare he criticise another country for doing the same to its people?

Shame on the Tory MPs who are whining because China has sanctioned them for highlighting that country’s abuses of the Uighurs!

Yes, you read that right. Shame on them, because they are hypocrites.

They seem to think it is perfectly reasonable to claim moral superiority over the government of another country for abusing its citizens’ human rights, while turning a blind eye to the fact that they are doing exactly the same to the people of the UK.

Tory MPs Iain Duncan Smith, Nusrat Ghani, Tim Loughton, Neil O’Brien and Tom Tugendhat all merrily voted in support of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill that will strip many of us of our human rights – and remove from all of us the right to protest in any meaningful way against further Tory atrocities against us.

Duncan Smith is well-known as an advocate of harm against his fellow UK citizens, having presided over the deaths of many thousands of benefit claimants – that occurred for no documented reason – under the cruel regime he imposed at the Department for Work and Pensions. But now he’s saying

Those of us who live free lives under the rule of law must speak for those who have no voice.

He was quite happy to deprive benefit claimants of their voices – and to look the other way when his policies deprived them of their lives. In their thousands, remember – not just one or two mistakes.

Attacking human rights abuses anywhere else in the world must be, for these people, an act of abominable hypocrisy.

Note also the typical reaction of the bully: these are people who sneered at us for protesting against the Police Bill and then went right ahead and voted to strip us of our rights – but when the shoe is on the other foot and they’re being singled out by China, suddenly they’re whining about how unfair it is.

Boris Johnson is, of course, the worst of the lot.

Despite being omitted from the list of UK MPs selected for sanction by China, he had the cheek to say

Freedom to speak out in opposition to abuse is fundamental and I stand firmly with them.

Fine words from the prime minister whose sickeningly draconian Police Bill strips his own people of that very freedom.

I do not wish to defend China. It’s treatment of the Uighurs is vile and should be opposed by all those of good faith. But these Tories are not opposing China in good faith. They’re trying to steal undeserved good publicity by attacking a country whose human rights abuses are – currently – worse than their own.

But it doesn’t work that way – or at least it shouldn’t.

Any attack on anybody’s rights as a human being is an attack against all of us – everywhere.

Johnson and his other little Tories might think they can take what moral high ground there is to be gained because their abuses aren’t quite as bad. But we know where that thinking leads.

The abuses become worse.

The number of people being oppressed grows.

The UK’s Tory government already fits every description of a fascist state that is worth reading. If you’re not feeling Johnson’s jackboot on your face yet, it’s just a matter of time.

So don’t waste any sympathy on these liars. They don’t deserve it.
