Why is Keir Starmer ignoring racism and Islamophobia exposed by the Forde Report

Starmer takes the knee for Black Lives Matter: to him it meant nothing more than a photo opportunity. Black lives don’t matter to him – as we discovered when he attacked the organisation shortly after. Now we find he’s turning a blind eye to racism identified in the report by Martin Forde KC.

Anti-black racism and Islamophobia in the Labour Party, raised by Martin Forde KC in his report to that organisation last summer, has been ignored by party leaders including Keir Starmer.

Starmer has not contacted Forde since he published his report confirming that anti-Semitism and other racism had been a battleground between left- and right-wing factionalists within Labour. It seems this was not what the party leader wanted to hear.

Fortunately for him, very few mainstream media journalists had been interestest either:

Yes – odd, that. Mainstream hacks had been able to doorstep Jeremy Corbyn at the drop of a hat, but Starmer seems uncontactable.

Worse, Starmer seems to have ignored concerns raised by black and minority ethnic figures within his own Parliamentary party:

Here’s some evidence to back up the assertion:

Strange how anti-Semitism against pro-Israel Zionists can be such a vital issue for Starmer, but racism against non-Zionist left-wing Jews, black people and Muslims gets a free pass.

#LabourFAIL: #KeirStarmer doesn’t care about colleagues like #AngelaRayner. Just ask #ZarahSultana

Rayner and Starmer: it seems clear that they’re not seeing eye-to-eye.

Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner has told the press about death threats and abuse that she receives:

How sad that, coming only days after a very visible public rift between her and party leader Keir Starmer, he had to try to turn it into a PR opportunity for himself:

It’s the right message – but very much the wrong messenger. Only a day later, Starmer would be snubbing his deputy again – sending out invitations to the press for Christmas drinks with him and… Rachel Reeves. Rayner wasn’t even mentioned, and should have been the co-host:

Even if it were not for glaring own goals like this, we know that Starmer couldn’t care less about abuse his female MPs receive – especially if they’re on the left of the party.

Rayner’s position has been in doubt, mostly because of her attempts to do her job in the company of a leader who clearly wants to foil her. Perhaps he’s hoping she’ll give up and resign so he can replace her with another white man from a business background.

But Zarah Sultana is definitely a woman of the Left – and one who has suffered continual abuse since her election to represent Coventry South. I’ve written about this before but if you want it straight from the source, just watch the first couple of minutes of this speech, if you can bear it:

What does Keir Starmer have to say about the threats and abuse that Zarah Sultana has faced?

Nothing at all.

He has never spoken to her.

Hansard AGAIN distorts the record after Labour MP Zarah Sultana attacks Tories as ‘dodgy’

Attacked again: Zarah Sultana.

Someone in the Commons Speaker’s Office needs to have a word with whoever writes Hansard, the official record of Parliamentary debates – because they’ve been falsifying that record again.

It was bad enough that Zarah Sultana, that rising star of the Labour left, had been challenged by Deputy Speaker Eleanor Laing for calling Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and Leader of the House Jacob Rees-Mogg “dodgy” – a surprisingly mild word for them, considering the many that could have been used, as Matt Thomas points out:

Laing has previously taken issue with Ms Sultana’s fellow Labour MP Dawn Butler, after she used language the Deputy Speaker considered “un-Parliamentary”. Ms Butler was ordered to leave the Commons chamber after pointing out something we all accept as true – that Boris Johnson has lied “time and time again”:

Now she was attacking another female MP of colour – for something comparatively mild:

As you can hear clearly at the end of the clip, Ms Sultana said, “I won’t withdraw those remarks, Madam Deputy Speaker.”

So why is Hansard brazenly – and falsely – stating that she said she would?

Here‘s the relevant passage – cut and pasted from the online version of Hansard. I would take a screenshot but I don’t have the ability on the laptop I’m currently using:

Madam Deputy Speaker

Order. The hon. Lady misunderstands me. I am asking her to withdraw the word “dodgy”. I am giving her the opportunity to put her question in other words. If she does not want to take that opportunity, she does not have to do so. I am not stopping the hon. Lady making the point she wants to make or asking the Leader of the House the question she wants to ask, and indeed drawing to general attention the points she wishes to draw to general attention. I am asking her to use moderate language in doing so. Would she like to put her question in moderate language?

I will withdraw those remarks, Madam Deputy Speaker.

That’s not right – and it isn’t the first time Hansard has got it wrong.

This Site reported in July that Tory minister Victoria Atkins had made false claims about racism in the Labour Party…

…while adding to the tally of Tory racism by telling a female, non-white MP to “lower” her “tone” – basically telling her to know her place.

And guess who that non-white MP happened to be?

Yes: Zarah Sultana:

It says much about the fear felt by the Tories about her that they treat Ms Sultana with such disrespect. She must really scare the daylights out of them.

Is this why Hansard has been doctored to make it seem that she backed down when she did not?

If so, it seems a particularly cowardly way of behaving.

To the editors of Hansard: let’s see a correction – pronto.

To the Speaker’s Office: let’s have an apology to Ms Sultana for the misrepresentation in the official record of Parliament. It’s your job to make sure debates are run properly and that must surely include the record of those debates that is available to the public.

Also, she deserves it, considering the abuse she has to face within the Commons chamber – both from the people who are supposed to police it and from the government itself.

Hypocrite Starmer stirs up hate then has the front to release Remembrance message

Hypocritical flag-waver: Keir Starmer speaks to the cameras in praise of our Armed Forces who have fought race hate and genocide – but he also supports a genocidal racist, and has said nothing against racist moves to unseat black female MPs in his own party.

Was anybody fooled by Keir Starmers display of commemoration and humility in memory of those in our Armed Forces who fought, among other things, against race hate and genocide?

Here’s his message:

And here’s another message by Keir Starmer, sent on the previous day, supporting genocidal racist Tzipi Hotovely and condemning the peaceful protesters who told her she was not welcome on their college campus:

The demonstration was peaceful. It is Hotovely who demands violence against people who do not belong to her own ethnic group – a group to which Starmer belongs by marriage and supports in his business dealings and political activities.

The message is clear:

… and that includes anybody who has served in the Armed Forces, fighting race hate and genocide.

Now, that race hate and intolerance are making themselves clear within the ranks of the Parliamentary Labour Party, as it seems Starmer is planning to deselect four sitting MPs – for the crime of being black:

It seems the claim is that some in local party groups are stirring up unrest on the basis that some of the named black women were selected as supporters of Jeremy Corbyn, rather than as representatives of the people in the constituencies.

Among those facing deselection is Zarah Sultana, who is widely accepted to have been one of the most effective MPs in a Labour Party that has been rendered toothless by Starmer’s leadership:

She recently highlighted the racist abuse she receives from members of the public, posting on Twitter an email she received on her return from bereavement leave after the death of her grandmother:

What has Starmer done to support his MP in the face of this racism?

Nothing.

I’ll say it again:

He has done nothing.

He supports genocidal racists and he undermines people of colour in his own organisation – while pretending to be pious for the cameras.

What a verminous, racist hypocrite.

‘Cancelled’ Young Labour rally is a huge success. Is this one part of the party we can still support?

Packed: the Young Labour rally that Keir Starmer’s Labour conference app falsely stated was cancelled. This is the way to beat liars like Starmer.

The antipathy shown by Keir Starmer, David Evans and their right-wing-dominated NEC toward Young Labour suggests that it is one of the few parts of the party that deserve to grow during their blighted reign.

According to the excellent Skwawkbox, Labour’s official conference app falsely announced that Young Labour’s “Rally for a Socialist Future” yesterday evening was “cancelled”; it wasn’t.

Instead, the event was packed with young socialists who heard speakers including Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell, Zarah Sultana, Nadia Whittome and representatives of the union Unite and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

And it was a huge success:

It seems to This Writer that Young Labour is one of the few parts of the Labour Party that is actually fulfilling its stated function as an organisation for democratic socialists.

As it represents a starting-point for people who will form the future heart of the Labour Party, CLPs should not only urge young people in their constituencies to join; they should actively find roles for Young Labour members as they mature – ultimately seeking to find Parliamentary candidates among them.

It’s a way of preventing Starmer and/or his successors from parachuting Tories in as candidates instead.

Also popular among the fringe events yesterday evening was a discussion between John McDonnell and former US Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who said left-wing Labour should challenge Starmer over his rejection of socialist policies.

According to the BBC,

Mr Sanders said what “the progressive movement” on the left was calling for was not “radical demands”, but it was time to put those who said no “on the defensive”.

“There is no reason why in the UK or the United States all workers should not be able to earn decent wages and have decent benefits,” he said.

“There is no reason all over the world [why] we cannot provide quality healthcare to all human beings as a right of citizenship.”

The senator added: “Those people who tell you you can’t do it, you ask them why, why can’t you do it? Because you are afraid to stand up to big money interests? That is not an acceptable reason.”

Mr Sanders said the approach would lead to a good outcome.

He concluded: “When you speak truth to people, they often respond in a positive way.”

He makes a good point.

And when you are speaking the truth in the face of an obvious lie – like the Starmer-run Labour app’s claim that the Young Labour rally had been cancelled – you have an immediate advantage.

Starmer’s supporters have voted to make Labour’s internal struggle a long, slow war of attrition, focusing on internal party politics while Boris Johnson and his Tories do whatever they like in the real world (and I use the word “real” advisedly). That has been their choice.

It should be the choice of socialists to call out their lies, put them under the spotlight and explain in the simplest possible terms why policies for everyone – upheld by honest people – are better.

Does Starmer support Zarah Sultana over Islamophobia – or the Islamophobes who attack her?

Zarah Sultana: she has received huge amounts of Islamophobic abuse since becoming a member of Parliament. What is her party leader, Keir Starmer, doing about it?

It’s a reasonable question.

Keir Starmer’s support for Zionist Jews (but not socialist Jews, note) is monumental; he will pursue well beyond the point of persecution anybody who suggests such people might behave in questionable ways (see this article for documented examples of such behaviour).

We have yet to see him offer such solidarity to Muslims facing discrimination – even those who are MPs in his own party – and questions are being asked:

Apparently not.

He has welcomed an alleged Islamophobe back into the party after a period of suspension instigated while Jeremy Corbyn was party leader. The person in question has close connections to both Starmer and the Labour leader’s current bestie, Peter Mandelson.

But we’ve heard nothing from him in support of his own MP, Zarah Sultana, who has received huge amounts of abuse, as she herself detailed in this speech:

It’s hard to watch, isn’t it?

Perhaps Starmer would prefer to hang out with right-wing chair of Poplar & Limehouse CLP, Chris Worrall, who seems to be obsessed with abusing Ms Sultana but has received no criticism for it. Why has this man not been suspended, pending expulsion for this targeted abuse (examples below)?

The Labour Party leader cannot be selective about the ethnic, religious or racial discrimination he opposes; he either opposes it all, or he is himself a racist.

Keir Starmer seems to think he does not need to hold himself to such standards – even though they are not lofty; they are criteria to which we should all adhere.

So he needs to start showing solidarity – or party members will find ways to make his future very different indeed.

Tory tone-policing: THEY should modify THEIR tone before talking down about racism to people of colour

Proud of herself: Helen Whately thought it was really clever of her to belittle a Parliamentary colleague because they happened to be a person of colour who didn’t go to a public school like her.

These Tory MPs really are up themselves, aren’t they?

They seem to think that their 80+ seat majority in Parliament means they can patronise the plebs on the opposite benches.

Stupidly, they think this includes tone-policing people of colour about racism.

Take a look at the video here and the comments attached:

(How sad that it was left to a minority political organisation – the Breakthrough Party – to stand up for Labour MPs who were being attacked for not being white public school alumni.)

Most recent offender was Tory talk droid Helen Whately, whose performances indicate that she is programmed with all her responses before being wheeled out to regurgitate them in public at the House of Commons or on TV.

This would explain her failure to announce the NHS three per cent pay deal (she wasn’t programmed to mention it) but not her treatment of Dr Rosena Allin-Khan when that MP challenged her:

People are angry:

It’s entirely possible that the Muslims who have become dispossessed – after Keir Starmer turned Labour into a haven for Islamophobes – will now think again before traipsing across to the Tories.

And not just Muslims:

Here’s the thing, though: being offended won’t achieve anything. People need to take action. So I have a proposal:

Pre-emptive strikes.

It’s too late for the current session but when Parliament returns in the autumn, every Opposition MP (of whichever party) should append their questions or speeches with the words: “The minister is reminded to moderate [his/her] tone to ensure that it is acceptable.”

They should all do this, all the time – especially during Prime Minister’s Questions.

And they should only relent when a government spokesperson stands up, apologises for the behaviour of ministers like Whately, and promises that they will not try to belittle their Parliamentary colleagues in such a childish way again.

It won’t happen and I don’t know why. Presumably Opposition MPs are masochists?

Who doctored Hansard to protect this Tory racist? Did she do it herself?

Not only did a Tory minister make false claims to Parliament about racism in the Labour Party, but the official record of the debate – Hansard – was doctored to make it seem that she did not.

Worse still, Victoria Atkins had already added to her party’s tally of racism by telling a fellow MP who happens not to be white to know her place and not be uppity with her betters (although she didn’t use those exact words).

Her shocking abuse of her position has sparked a demand for the Commons Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, to take action – not just to correct the record but to save the reputation of the House of Commons.

Here’s just one complaint to Hoyle, from Twitter, with follow-up messages to show the issue:

You can see that Leftworks is absolutely correct by watching this video (ironically posted by a fan of Atkins).

She did indeed quote the EHRC’s remit as though it were that organisation’s conclusion – it was not – and Hansard did indeed insert three words to falsify the record.

The effect of Atkins’s words at the time they were said, and in that place, would have been to negate Jeremy Corbyn’s argument – she was effectively saying that he was a racist and therefore had no right to accuse others.

Furthermore, of course, her claim about Luciana Berger needing police protection was false.

Right-thinking people are up in arms about this – and rightly so:

Ms Atkins, who was standing in for her racist boss, Home Secretary Priti Patel, was in the Commons to answer an urgent question on what the government would do to stop racist abuse on the social media.

Patel had been – rightly – accused of “stoking” such abuse by Tyrone Mings of the England football team, whose teammates Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were victims of it.

When she was tackled on the racism of her own prime minister by rising Labour star Zarah Sultana, Atkins treated her as if she were a black housemaid in the pre-Civil War American south, warning her to “lower” her “tone”:

I make no apologies for adding in this tweet, which includes much of the same video material, for the sake of Seema Chandwani’s observation about the way Ms Sultana was treated:

Shall we have a think about racism by the prime minister – that’s Boris Johnson, by the way – and by Atkins’s boss Patel?

Let’s start with Priti Patel, who locked asylum-seekers from foreign countries into filthy concentration camps where overcrowding caused hundreds of them to catch Covid-19. How many of them died? We haven’t seen the figures.

She wants to bring in a new law making it an offence to help refugees into the UK – even by saving them from drowning in the sea off the UK’s coasts.

Another Bill passing through Parliament at the moment will target the GRT community – Gypsies, Romanies and Travellers – by assuming that they are committing crimes simply because they are Gypsies, Romanies or Travellers. This is classically-defined racism.

The Home Office at which Atkins is a minister destroyed the records showing that members of the Windrush Generation were UK citizens – and then pursued an aggressive policy to deny them services they had spent decades funding, like NHS healthcare and state benefits, while taking action to deport them. One may conclude from this that Atkins is a racist herself.

Need I go on?

As for Boris Johnson, Twitter has been full of commentary on his racism:

That’s right – he actually approached a black woman at a party, made monkey noises at her and tried to hand her a watermelon.

And – thankfully – the fact of his racism is filtering through to the general public, despite the protection he gets from the Tory media:

Perhaps the last word on Johnson’s racism should be this, that relates it back to Atkins:

As for Hansard: it seems the record may be edited – possibly by MPs themselves – but not if the meaning of the words spoken is changed by those edits:

The changes to Atkins’s speech change the meaning of the words and are therefore not permissible.

As Commons Speaker – the MP who chairs sessions of the House of Commons – Lindsay Hoyle needs to act to save its reputation.

How many other changes are being made to Hansard, that nobody catches because they happen surreptitiously?

And why would Hoyle – or anyone working in Parliament – wish to support or enable these Tory racists?

#PeaceAndJustice Project launches four-point plan for a better future

Jeremy Corbyn: this is from when he announced the Project for Peace and Justice before Christmas. I could have waited for a newer pic but wanted to get the story out as soon as possible.

Legendary thinker Noam Chomsky headed the list of supporters launching the new Peace and Justice Project founded by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn today (January 17).

The new organisation aims to bring people together – not just within the United Kingdom but internationally – to devise, and bring into being, radical plans to improve the lives of ordinary people who have been crushed by selfish rich people for far too long.

Speaking at the launch, Corbyn announced four plans, which This Writer put out on Twitter:
