A third of Sure Start family centres have been closed amid ignorance about their users

Sure Start: the Tories tried to get rid of it. Do they hate children?

Wow.

This Writer can’t tell what’s worse – the fact that nearly 1,300 family centres that provided vital clinics, along with health and parenting support, saving the NHS £5 million a year…

Or the ignorance from the Tory supporters commenting on it.

The charity Action for Children has said Sure Start centres are often the first place where abuse and neglect can be detected.

But commenters on the Daily Mirror story about the closure focused instead on their own prejudices.

One said Sure Start centres were not used by the families for whom they were intended. When another asked how they would know, they didn’t bother to respond.

Another indicated they were pleased the vital centres were being closed as they were “a breeding ground for single mothers and potential Labour voters”.

Responding to the report’s statement that Labour’s Angela Rayner had used one as a single mother in the North West, the same commenter stated: “Answer, don’t become a single ‘mom’.”

These people seem to think the Sure Start was responsible for turning people into single parents!

They seem proud to parade their ignorance: there are many reasons people may become single parents but they seem to assume that it is a lifestyle choice. Where’s their research to support that?

Isn’t it more likely that the Tories have simply removed a service that would have helped the vast majority of children, in the belief that it would save a few pennies.

Note that I’m not saying the belief is true – in fact, evidence suggests the opposite is more likely.

But with the Tories, it’s always about money.

Children will be better-off under a LABOUR government

Sure Start: The Tories tried to get rid of it but Labour will bring it back.

This is the message of today’s (November 9) general election campaigning.

I’ll sum it up succinctly for you:

Labour will reopen 1,000 Sure Start centres that the Tories spitefully closed.

Labour will also expand free childcare to help working families.

Meanwhile, under the Tories, the vast majority of Parliamentary constituencies will receive less funding in 2020 – per pupil – than in 2015. Of the 17 constituencies that will get a raise, 13 are currently held by Conservatives – because the Tories are using the funding system to look after themselves, not your children. One constituency remains static. A further 515 constituencies will suffer savage Tory cuts under a continuing Conservative government.

Research has also shown that the academy system, started by Tony Blair and hugely expanded by the Conservatives, has put the fate of more than 100,000 pupils in the hands of a handful of extremely rich men who have a vast array of powers and little to no oversight from parents, teachers, pupils or local government – and run these schools in their own interests rather than those of the pupils.

These are the facts, and they make one thing clear:

If you love your children, you’ll vote Labour.

Positive campaign announcement of the day: Labour will save Sure Start centres

150208

A Labour Government will save Sure Start and double the number of childcare places provided at them to more than 118,000.

Labour will introduce a new statutory obligation on Sure Start to provide access to child care – as well as giving them new powers to open up their doors to charities and local providers so the whole community can use them.

The aim is to make the best use of these public buildings, re-establishing them as family hubs in the community and reaching more families than ever before. Labour says the alternative under a Tory second term – in which they have already signalled that they will cut schools budgets year-on-year – is a recipe for national decline.

The Government has allowed Sure Start centres to close or effectively be mothballed. This is disastrous for local communities at a time when childcare places are falling even though demand is greater than ever. Many providers say lack of space or affordable premises is the reason why they cannot set up or expand in an area.

“Sure Start was one of the greatest achievements of the last Labour government but, under the Tories, there are hundreds fewer while others have reduced services and opening hours,” said Tristram Hunt, Labour’s shadow education secretary.

“It is a scandal that these brilliant community assets are being mothballed or even closed at a time when parents are crying out for decent childcare in their communities.

“We will not succeed as country unless we ensure every child has a decent start in life.

“We will not succeed as a country if parents can’t get to work because they can’t get the childcare they need.

“We will not succeed as a country if we waste resources by allowing Sure Start centres to be idle, empty or even close.

“So we’re going to put the lights back on, get the kids back in and restore the founding purpose of Sure Start.”

He said: “This plan won’t cost money, it is purely a question of political will and leadership. The Government seems content to sit back and let Sure Start wither away. If the Tories win a second term, I fear Sure Start will disappear in many parts of our country and one of the great progressive programmes will be lost to the next generation. Labour created Sure Start. Labour cares about Sure Start. Labour will save Sure Start.”

This blog is no fan of Tristram Hunt – he’s an upper-middle-class oik playing at being a member of the Party of the People – but this pledge to restore Sure Start is a genuinely positive move and he is to be congratulated for it.

UKIP would scrap Childrens Centres & SureStart! – John D Turner

Well, well, well … Who knew it? ukip’s latest policy on welfare was out there all the time! Basically, they aim to be tough on those in poverty and well to the right of IDS when it comes to social policy, writes John D Turner on his blog.

How do I know this? I was chatting with someone the other day about ukip’s all things to all men (women know your place!) Bedroom Tax policy and I mused about where they stood on other Social Security issues. My friend sent me this link. One social policy alone kills dead the idea that ukip would really stand up for the left behind, the axing of Sure Start.

You can read the rest of the article on the John D Turner blog – and tell him I sent you!

It seems UKIP is currently trying to get as many followers/supporters as possible to flood critical websites, blogs and social media pages with propaganda, so let’s all play a game of ‘Count the UKIP stooges’. How many can YOU find?
