Putin arrest warrant issued; warrants for Blair and Bush might be more successful

Vladimir Putin: if he ever did go on the run, he might look like this – especially if he didn’t have time to grab a shirt.

Here’s a redundant threat:

The international criminal court (ICC) in The Hague has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin for overseeing the abduction of Ukrainian children, sending Russia another significant step on the path to becoming a pariah state.

In granting the request for warrants by the ICC prosecutor, a panel of judges agreed that there were “reasonable grounds” to believe Putin and his children’s rights commissioner, Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, bore responsibility for the “unlawful deportation” of Ukrainian children.

The warrants are the first to be issued by the ICC for crimes committed in the Ukraine war, and it is one of the rare occasions when the court has issued a warrant for a sitting head of state

How does the ICC expect to deliver that warrant and have the arrest made?

Vladimir Putin is the head of the Russian state and, despite its losses in Ukraine, that country’s armed forces remain formidable – not to mention its nuclear arsenal.

He has no reason to honour the warrant and there is no possibility of him facing justice for his alleged crimes.

Some think the ICC should concentrate on more achievable aims:

How about it, ICC? Will you go after some alleged war criminals who can be brought to justice? Why not?

Why is Tony Blair renewing his ‘ID cards’ plan right before elections when we’ll need them?

This was predictable:

We’re going to need ID cards anyway – or a preferred form of identification like a photo driving licence or a passport – if we want to vote in the local elections in May. A friend of mine sent me this image as a reminder:

But that’s not what Blair (and his former sparring partner across the Dispatch Box, William Hague) is on about.

They want digital ID cards that provide every important piece of information about us:

Sir Tony and Lord Hague… argue digital ID cards would make it easier and more secure for people to access services and for the government to understand their needs and better target support.

“In a world in which everything from vaccine status to aeroplane tickets and banking details are available on our personal devices, it is illogical that the same is not true of our individual public records,” they write.

They suggest such a scheme could allow people to prove their identity, age, driving licence, right to live and work in the UK and even their educational qualifications.

Right – and it could also lay us wide open to identity thieves. Not a brilliant idea!

There’s an argument that other countries are already imposing such a system on their populations and we need to catch up. But I was reminded only last night that, a few years ago, other countries were leaping to join the Euro currency and abandon their own – and look what happened to Greece as a result. The UK kept the Pound and it was the smartest thing that we could have done.

Several of us think that Blair doesn’t really understand what he’s saying…

… and here’s a “for example”: Sebastian Payne, contender to take over the title of ‘Child Star of Politices’ from former holders Owen Jones and Ian Hislop, arguing that ID cards will be a great way to “control” immigration, by controlling the wider population of the UK:

Is that what you want?

Do you want to be forced to carry an identity card that allows people in self-imposed positions of authority to tell you where to go, what to do when you get there, and deny you the right to self-determination?

That is where Blair, Hague – and Payne – are going on this.

‘Heir to Blair’ Keir Starmer wants Labour to be ‘tough on crime’ again

Keir Starmer seems determined to hammer home to voters – and rebels in his party – that he is a Blairite and always was.

His latest demonstration of this is a return to the old Tony Blair slogan ‘Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime’, with a plan to bring back the old ASBOs (Anti-Social Behaviour Orders) under the new title of ‘Respect Orders’.

Apparently the aim is to prevent criminal behaviour, rather than solve it after it has happened – and in this respect, This Writer is very much on board with this policy. If it works!

It was debated on the BBC’s Politics Live, and it’s noticeable that some of the debate suggested that this is an about-turn from attempts by Labour to disown Blairite policies. The problem is that Blair made many policy mistakes – his economics was too close to Toryism, meaning he failed to rectify harmful decisions from the Thatcher and Major years, and the consequences of his warmongering are well-known.

Danny Kruger’s attempt to say that later Labour MPs’ attempts to distance themselves from these disasters persuaded voters that Labour was bad then and continued to be bad are risible, in the light of his own party’s failures (crime is currently at a 20-year high).

#TonyBlairPetition: bid to stop former PM from having a #knighthood tops a million signatures

Tony Blair: he thought he was going to be knighted after dragging the UK into a genocidal war against a country that wasn’t doing us any harm. Now he may have to think again.

The petition to stop Tony Blair being made a “Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter” has now acquired more than a million signatures – but the tiny minority of the privileged in Westminster are digging in their heels.

The petition passed a million signatures yesterday – January 7 – and at the time of writing has nearly 1,050,000.

Some have commented on the number in terms of the number of deaths Blair caused during his disastrous adventure into Iraq with George W Bush of the United States:

But others have been busy devising spurious arguments to stymie the will of the people.

This Writer has heard rumours that Downing Street will refuse to accept the petition, point-blank. No explanation, no justification – just entitled disdain for the demands of the grubby Great Unwashed (as they still consider us).

An alternative has been put by Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey – that whether Blair receives a knighthood is a matter for the Queen:

There’s just one problem with this – but it’s a big one: the Queen is not responsible for decisions on who receives a knighthood; she acts on the recommendation of the prime minister – and in this case, he is acting on the recommendation of Labour leader Keir Starmer.

So for Davey – sorry, Sir Ed – to suggest that the petition is flying in the face of the Queen’s wishes is nonsense.

And all the time, the total number of signatures is mounting up. So far, nearly one-fortieth of the electorate has signed.

How many will have to, before the Establishment realise we won’t back down?

#KeirStarmer tries to rewrite history so his buddy #TonyBlair can have a #knighthood. FAILS

Why do politicians always think they can overwrite history with their own versions?

Keir Starmer was doing it on Good Morning Britain today (January 4), in a bid to justify nominating Tony Blair for a knighthood.

The New New Labour leader was responding to a petition calling for the knighthood to be revoked, that had received more than half a million signatures at the time.

As I type this, nearly 650,000 names have been attached and it is one of Change.org’s most popular petitions of all time.

Starmer spoke about what he saw as Blair’s achievements – but unaccountably failed to mention the biggest reason people are complaining: his decision to drag the UK into a war in Iraq that killed a million people for no reason – because it was based on a lie.

The charitable version of events has it that Blair believed false evidence that had been presented to him as proof that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and its then-leader, Saddam Hussein, was willing to use them.

But this can’t explain away the fact that, advised to wait for a UN resolution supporting military action, Blair didn’t; it seems he pressurised advisers to say he could proceed with out it, and acted on that advice when they provided it.

And Starmer’s whitewashing of the Northern Ireland peace process is also a crock.

Research carried out by This Writer a few years ago, and presented on This Site, showed that Bill Clinton was the main instigator of moves that led to the Good Friday Agreement. When Blair became prime minister, he handed responsibility over to the late Mo Mowlam.

She, in turn, relied on help from people who were on good terms with the various organisations that needed to be involved.

This included one person who, it seems, was instrumental in bringing republicans to the negotiating table. He had spent years acting as a go-between in an effort to keep people talking and the possibility of peace alive. His name was Jeremy Corbyn.

So if anybody deserves an honour for the Northern Ireland peace process, considering Ms Mowlam has passed away, it would be Jeremy Corbyn, not Tony Blair.

The irony is that Mr Corbyn wouldn’t accept it because he knows what it represents.

So perhaps the video clip of Starmer on Good Morning Britain should be corrected – to something like this?

But that wouldn’t persuade people to let Blair have his knighthood, would it?

‘Rescind #TonyBlairknighthood’ petition tops half a million signatures

Tony Blair: half a million (so far) say he doesn’t deserve a knighthood. What do you say?

A petition calling for Tony Blair to be denied the knighthood he has been given in the New Year Honours list has received more than half a million signatures in two days.

That’s still fewer than one per cent of the UK’s population, but the number of signatures and the speed at which people have signed the Change.org online petition clearly indicates a huge groundswell of protest against the honour for a former prime minister who led the UK into a war that killed a million people on the strength of a lie, and whose name appears in child sex procurer Ghislaine Maxwell’s infamous ‘black book’.

It is now one of the most popular petitions ever to be hosted on Change.org.

Blair’s nomination to the highest order of knighthood in the UK – the Order of the Garter – is also considered to be a signal to the general public from the UK’s rich and entitled Establishment, that our opinions don’t matter a jot, that they will do whatever they like, and that they will rub our faces in it whenever they get the chance.

Blair was nominated for his honour by Labour leader Keir Starmer, who also nominated Islamophobe Trevor Phillips for a knighthood – for his services to equality!

Starmer really insulted us with that one – having a racist knighted while claiming that his version of the Labour Party is fighting hard against racism.

Why is the Queen knighting someone in #GhislaineMaxwell’s infamous #blackbook?

Knighted: But whether you believe he’s a war criminal over Iraq, Tony Blair is an associate of sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell and child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Why should he be honoured by the Queen with that in his back pocket?

The so-called Establishment is rubbing our collective nose in its filth.

It is a matter of days since Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted on five charges of sex trafficking.

But now Tony Blair, who is listed as an associate of Maxwell and the late child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in their now-infamous black book, is to be knighted in the New Year Honours list.

The former Labour leader was nominated by the current Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer. See how it works?

Nobody is (yet) saying any of the people named in the black book are guilty of any offences, but police in the United States have made it clear that they will press charges if they discover evidence that supports such a move.

Knowing that, This Writer would say it is unreasonable to nominate somebody listed in that book for an honour because, if investigations develop in that direction in the future, they may bring that system into disrepute.

Oh – who am I trying to kid, “may bring the system into disrepute”? It’s already deeply disreputable!

Blair’s nomination for a knighthood is also deeply offensive because he took the UK into a war with Iraq that killed a million people, on the basis of fabricated evidence because the US government didn’t think attacking Afghanistan (the source of the 911 terrorist attack) would excite the public imagination enough.

I’ll add a few tweets illustrating the above points at the bottom of this piece.

For now, I want to end by letting you know that you can do something about this.

There’s a petition calling for Blair’s knighthood to be annulled, on the Change.org website.

The text states: “Tony Blair caused irreparable damage to both the constitution of the United Kingdom and to the very fabric of the nation’s society. He was personally responsible for causing the death of countless innocent, civilian lives and servicemen in various conflicts. For this alone he should be held accountable for war crimes.

“Tony Blair is the least deserving person of any public honour, particularly anything awarded by Her Majesty the Queen.”

The trouble is, with the Establishment grinding our faces into its dirt, it’s unlikely to pay any attention to a few signatures in an online petition.

But it’s better than doing nothing. So I still recommend signing the petition now.

There’s a good reason we shouldn’t all take vaccines that have Tony Blair’s support!

Tony Blair: He might look tight-lipped in this image but when he opens his mouth, he’s dangerous.

New Labour has-been and alleged war criminal Tony Blair has been trying to be relevant again.

His fan club has been singing his praises after he announced an outline plan of what Boris Johnson’s government should be doing during it’s four-week November lockdown in England.

And fair play to him – at least he has a plan. Johnson’s will be to give even more of your money to private-enterprise ‘test, track and trace’ snake-oil charlatans who won’t deliver anything and wait for herd immunity to kick in, no matter how many people die before it does.

Here’s Blair’s plan:

What a shame it falls down in the details!

You see, the vaccines he wants to deploy have not been proven safe – or even particularly effective – yet, and look at the kind of people supporting him on it:

This is Blair’s perennial problem. He comes out with these grand overarching schemes, but the minutiae let him down.

For instance, do you remember when he said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (WMDs)?

In fact, Iraq destroyed its chemical weapons stockpile and halted its biological and nuclear weapon programs in 1991, more than a decade before Blair made the speech quoted above.

But the UK still went to war in Iraq – and that’s why many of us want to see Blair tried in The Hague for war crimes.

Looking at it objectively, would you put your health in the hands of this reckless cowboy?

The ugly face of New Labour rears up again: Chris Leslie and Nita Clarke

It seems the neoliberal Blairites of New Labour are coming out of the woodwork in an effort to ensure that nobody in their right mind supports the modern Labour Party next year.

According to the Huffington Post, shadow chief secretary to the Treasury Chris Leslie reckons that a future Labour government will not undo the Coalition’s hugely unpopular cuts but will continue to impose the austerity that has kept our economy in crisis for the last four years.

In that case, why bother voting for Labour? We’ve already got one lot of Conservatives in power; there’s no need for any more.

Just to recap what we all know already, austerity is no way out of a recession. Economies grow when an increased money supply travels through the system, making profits for businesses and creating the fiscal multiplier effect. This means more tax comes to the government and it is able to pay down its debts. Austerity cuts off that money supply, making it much more difficult for money to circulated, profit to be made and tax to be taken. Evidence shows that the only people who profit from it are those who were rich already.

Indeed, the current economic miracle (if you believe George Osborne) was engineered by government investment – rather than austerity – in a housing price bubble. It’s almost a return to Keynesian economics, but done in a cack-handed, amateurish way that will cause more problems in the long run.

Austerity is, therefore, a Conservative policy and one that should be abandoned if Labour ever comes to power. The fact that this Leslie person is promoting it shows his true-Blue colours. Perhaps someone should start a petition to have him ejected from the party.

Retaining austerity was described by the HuffPost as part of “Labour’s ‘radical’ policy plans”, but this is ridiculous. How can retaining a policy that is already causing uncounted harm be, in any way, radical? It’s just more of the same neoliberal Conservatism.

“George Osborne has had his five years to eradicate the deficit. I am determined that we finish that task on which he has failed,” said Leslie in the article. How does he propose to achieve that aim, if his methods are the same? The man just isn’t making sense.

Meanwhile, a former Blair aide named Nita Clarke has defended another pillar of neoliberalism – privatisation – by making the absurd claim that Labour should not criticise private firms when they fail to deliver public services.

Speaking at a conference by the right-wing thinktank Progress, she said: “We have to be really careful that we’re not always seen as attacking the private sector and celebrating their failures. How do you think that makes the staff who work there feel?”

How does Nita Clarke think British citizens feel about being let down on a regular basis by these profit-guzzling clowns, ever since Margaret Thatcher’s Conservatives first started letting them into places where they did not belong?

How does Nita Clarke think British citizens felt when neoliberal New Labour refused to push back the tide of privatisation?

How does Nita Clarke think British citizens should feel about the fact that privatisation is now threatening the welfare state, the National Health Service and even state pensions?

Only today, Vox Political reblogged an article warning that HM Revenue and Customs may be undergoing preparations for privatisation.

Like austerity, privatisation is a fundamental pillar of the current neoliberal agenda. It has no place in the Labour Party, if the Labour Party is serious about opposing the Conservatives at the next election.

There should be no place in Labour for Chris Leslie, Nita Clarke, or anybody who supports their views, either.

It’s a view that might be unpopular with the Blue suits that make up the current Labour leadership.

But it’s the only way Labour will ever come up with a really ‘radical’ – and workable – plan.
