#TonyBlairPetition: bid to stop former PM from having a #knighthood tops a million signatures

Tony Blair: he thought he was going to be knighted after dragging the UK into a genocidal war against a country that wasn’t doing us any harm. Now he may have to think again.

The petition to stop Tony Blair being made a “Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter” has now acquired more than a million signatures – but the tiny minority of the privileged in Westminster are digging in their heels.

The petition passed a million signatures yesterday – January 7 – and at the time of writing has nearly 1,050,000.

Some have commented on the number in terms of the number of deaths Blair caused during his disastrous adventure into Iraq with George W Bush of the United States:

But others have been busy devising spurious arguments to stymie the will of the people.

This Writer has heard rumours that Downing Street will refuse to accept the petition, point-blank. No explanation, no justification – just entitled disdain for the demands of the grubby Great Unwashed (as they still consider us).

An alternative has been put by Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey – that whether Blair receives a knighthood is a matter for the Queen:

There’s just one problem with this – but it’s a big one: the Queen is not responsible for decisions on who receives a knighthood; she acts on the recommendation of the prime minister – and in this case, he is acting on the recommendation of Labour leader Keir Starmer.

So for Davey – sorry, Sir Ed – to suggest that the petition is flying in the face of the Queen’s wishes is nonsense.

And all the time, the total number of signatures is mounting up. So far, nearly one-fortieth of the electorate has signed.

How many will have to, before the Establishment realise we won’t back down?

#KeirStarmer tries to rewrite history so his buddy #TonyBlair can have a #knighthood. FAILS

Keir Starmer and Tony Blair: this image is satirical, of course, and is in no way intended to represent the relationship between these Labour leaders.

Why do politicians always think they can overwrite history with their own versions?

Keir Starmer was doing it on Good Morning Britain today (January 4), in a bid to justify nominating Tony Blair for a knighthood.

The New New Labour leader was responding to a petition calling for the knighthood to be revoked, that had received more than half a million signatures at the time.

As I type this, nearly 650,000 names have been attached and it is one of Change.org’s most popular petitions of all time.

Starmer spoke about what he saw as Blair’s achievements – but unaccountably failed to mention the biggest reason people are complaining: his decision to drag the UK into a war in Iraq that killed a million people for no reason – because it was based on a lie.

The charitable version of events has it that Blair believed false evidence that had been presented to him as proof that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and its then-leader, Saddam Hussein, was willing to use them.

But this can’t explain away the fact that, advised to wait for a UN resolution supporting military action, Blair didn’t; it seems he pressurised advisers to say he could proceed with out it, and acted on that advice when they provided it.

And Starmer’s whitewashing of the Northern Ireland peace process is also a crock.

Research carried out by This Writer a few years ago, and presented on This Site, showed that Bill Clinton was the main instigator of moves that led to the Good Friday Agreement. When Blair became prime minister, he handed responsibility over to the late Mo Mowlam.

She, in turn, relied on help from people who were on good terms with the various organisations that needed to be involved.

This included one person who, it seems, was instrumental in bringing republicans to the negotiating table. He had spent years acting as a go-between in an effort to keep people talking and the possibility of peace alive. His name was Jeremy Corbyn.

So if anybody deserves an honour for the Northern Ireland peace process, considering Ms Mowlam has passed away, it would be Jeremy Corbyn, not Tony Blair.

The irony is that Mr Corbyn wouldn’t accept it because he knows what it represents.

So perhaps the video clip of Starmer on Good Morning Britain should be corrected – to something like this?

But that wouldn’t persuade people to let Blair have his knighthood, would it?

Why is the Queen knighting someone in #GhislaineMaxwell’s infamous #blackbook?

Knighted: But whether you believe he’s a war criminal over Iraq, Tony Blair is an associate of sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell and child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Why should he be honoured by the Queen with that in his back pocket?

The so-called Establishment is rubbing our collective nose in its filth.

It is a matter of days since Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted on five charges of sex trafficking.

But now Tony Blair, who is listed as an associate of Maxwell and the late child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in their now-infamous black book, is to be knighted in the New Year Honours list.

The former Labour leader was nominated by the current Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer. See how it works?

Nobody is (yet) saying any of the people named in the black book are guilty of any offences, but police in the United States have made it clear that they will press charges if they discover evidence that supports such a move.

Knowing that, This Writer would say it is unreasonable to nominate somebody listed in that book for an honour because, if investigations develop in that direction in the future, they may bring that system into disrepute.

Oh – who am I trying to kid, “may bring the system into disrepute”? It’s already deeply disreputable!

Look at some other knights of the realm – current and former:

Point made?

Blair’s nomination for a knighthood is also deeply offensive because he took the UK into a war with Iraq that killed a million people, on the basis of fabricated evidence because the US government didn’t think attacking Afghanistan (the source of the 911 terrorist attack) would excite the public imagination enough.

I’ll add a few tweets illustrating the above points at the bottom of this piece.

For now, I want to end by letting you know that you can do something about this.

There’s a petition calling for Blair’s knighthood to be annulled, on the Change.org website.

The text states: “Tony Blair caused irreparable damage to both the constitution of the United Kingdom and to the very fabric of the nation’s society. He was personally responsible for causing the death of countless innocent, civilian lives and servicemen in various conflicts. For this alone he should be held accountable for war crimes.

“Tony Blair is the least deserving person of any public honour, particularly anything awarded by Her Majesty the Queen.”

The trouble is, with the Establishment grinding our faces into its dirt, it’s unlikely to pay any attention to a few signatures in an online petition.

But it’s better than doing nothing. So I still recommend signing the petition now.

If you need encouragement, have a look at these:

More than 250,000 people have signed a petition to deny Iain Duncan Smith a knighthood.

The worst thing about this is, he probably thinks it’s not enough.

Here‘s a link to the petition. Iain Duncan Smith was granted a knighthood in the New Year honours.

And here’s petition author Mona Kamal, explaining why he should be divested of it:

It is … an insult to all those who suffered needless distress, impoverishment and humiliation as a direct result of his attacks on our welfare system.

During his time as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan Smith was responsible for some of the cruellest and most extreme welfare reforms this country has ever seen.

Under his stewardship of the DWP, the UK became the first country to face a United Nations inquiry into human rights abuses against disabled people – an investigation which later confirmed that our government had been guilty of “grave and systemic violations of the rights of disabled people”.

Over the past decade of austerity very little has demonstrated the callousness and incompetence of this Tory government than their treatment of those with disabilities and chronic mental illness.

The legacy of Iain Duncan Smith is one of incompetence, hypocrisy and above all cruelty to the most vulnerable in our society.

The fact he is to be rewarded for this is a travesty of natural justice which reveals the rottenness at the core of our establishment.

Man with worsening brain injuries has benefits slashed while Duncan Smith gets a knighthood [VIDEO]

You’re probably sick and tired of me banging on about the way the Tory government has been persecuting the sick and disabled – so I’ll hand you over to one of the victims.

Andy Nicholson runs a video blog under the alias ‘The Brain Damaged Baron’.

Doctors pronounced him lucky to survive a head-first fall down a partially-built stairwell in 1994.

The incident left him with a serious brain injury that means he is partially-sighted, has short-term memory loss, constant headaches, epilepsy and coordination issues, along with chronic fatigue.

These conditions have worsened over time but the Tories have twice pronounced him fit for work, in spite of medical evidence and, indeed, a court order.

Here he is to explain for himself:

It’s powerful stuff; it shows that the Department for Work and Pensions, under the Conservatives, is determined to gaslight people into accepting an unreasonable view that brain injuries can be healed, just because an unqualified assessor says so.

These people have to suffer their way through unnecessarily-complicated appeal procedures, simply to keep the small amount of money they need to survive.

Meanwhile, the man who made to possible for this government department to lie so blatantly and brutally, simply for the sake of holding on to a few farthings, has been awarded a knighthood.

If you live in the UK, you live in a crazed, corrupt country. And if you voted Tory – count yourself among the crazies.

Honour for Duncan Smith has not humiliated the left – it has ENERGISED us

The pick of the Tories: Iain Duncan Smith might have been given a knighthood by Boris Johnson’s government, but few people are impressed with the face-chiseller from Chingford.

I read a message on Twitter suggesting that the knighthood for Iain Duncan Smith was an attempt to take a leaf out of Donald Trump’s playbook – humiliating and de-motivating opponents of the new Tory regime.

The honour for the so-called ‘Architect of Death’, whose draconian policies of hate against benefit claimants including some of the most vulnerable, ill and disabled people in the United Kingdom have ended the lives of thousands upon thousands of people who had as much right to live as the rest of us, was an attempt to demonstrate to us just how little we matter to Boris Johnson and his elitist clique.

Well, it backfired massively, didn’t it?

When I wrote my article calling on you to support Dr Mona Kamal’s petition to deny Duncan Smith his knighthood, it had already acquired a significant 70,000+ signatures. That number has now more than doubled to nearly 160,000 at the time of writing.

In just two days!

Instead of showing us that we are weak, and few, the decision to honour one of the least worthy men in the United Kingdom has instead inspired us all to dust ourselves down, stand up and show that we are many and we are strong.

And we reject a government that scorns its people in this way.

Keep signing the petition, folks. Let’s make this a statement that Boris Johnson remembers – to his humiliation.

Will you sign NHS doctor’s petition to stop Iain Duncan Smith receiving knighthood?

He laughed: Remember, IDS laughed at the terror he was causing a rape victim by using the Bedroom Tax to make it too expensive for her to keep a ‘panic room’. The man thrives on terrorising others.

I’ll be signing – will you?

It probably won’t do any good – the Tories tend to find a way to ignore any petitions demanding any activity they don’t want to carry out, no matter how many people sign it.

But it will be a great sign of resistance against Boris Johnson and his fake “people’s government”!

A petition has been launched calling for MP Iain Duncan Smith to be stripped off his knighthood.

More than 30,000 people have already signed the petition against the former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions after it was announced that he has been given a knighthood in the New Year Honours list.

The decision to knight the former Conservative minister has sparked fury amongst his opponents, years after he was criticised for laughing during a Bedroom Tax debate and shedding ‘crocodile tears’ online.

The Chingford and Woodford Green MP is known as the ‘architect’ of Universal Credit , the system of benefits which rolls a number of state payments into one, supposedly simplifying the process.

Around 1.9 million people have been left £1,000 worse off a year and many have been forced onto the streets due to lengthy delays before their first payments and punitive sanctions.

The petition, set up by Dr Mona Kamal Ahmed, a NHS psychiatrist … claims Mr Smith was responsible for “some of the cruellest most extreme welfare reforms this country has ever seen”.

It says that under his leadership, the “UK became the first ever country to face a United Nations enquiry into human rights abuses against disabled people” and that the “suffering and impoverishment” seen in the UK today are a “direct result of the welfare reforms he has implemented”.

In her explanation, Dr Ahmed writes that she has frequently witnessed people diagnosed with chronic mental illness in A&E who have been driven to panic attacks as a result of the anxiety caused by these tests and over the prospect of losing the welfare payments they rely on.

The petition is on the Change.org site, here.

Theresa May’s all-purpose solution to her Brexit woes: When in doubt – BRIBE your way out

John Hayes: Honoured – or bribed? Anyone with an ounce of integrity would reject a knighthood offered under these conditions.

It isn’t time for the Birthday or New Year Honours, so why is Theresa May suddenly flinging knighthoods around like there’s no tomorrow?

The answer should be obvious.

She knows there will be no tomorrow – for her – if she doesn’t buy some loyalty.

And she sure as blazes won’t be spending any of her own money on it!

So here’s what she has done:

No, but he is a Brexiter who is critical of the deal and he has demanded that Mrs May “look again” at her Brexit deal, saying he could not support her plans for the Northern Irish border. But – perhaps crucially – he hasn’t submitted a formal letter of “no confidence” in Mrs May’s leadership yet.

It seems clear that the out-of-the-blue honour has been granted, not because Mr Hayes spent 18 years on the Tory front bench (he became a backbencher again in January), but because Mrs May hopes it will influence him, and Tory MPs with similar views, to support her.

And here are some of the responses:

David Schneider suggested this was the “Best Black Friday deal yet. A knighthood going for just 1 vote.”

Aaron Bastani stated that this was “Banana republic stuff. Just without the good weather.”

Channel 4 News reporter Michael Crick tweeted: “Normally MPs would have to wait til the next honours list for such things, but in the present circumstances, Hayes presumably knew Theresa May couldn’t guarantee how long she’d be around to make good of such a promise. So it’s payment now.”

To this, Owen Jones responded simply: “This is so corrupt.”

The Labour Press Team quoted Chester MP Chris Matheson: “It would be a spectacular act of desperation for Theresa May to be giving away knighthoods in a bid to win votes for her botched Brexit deal.”

Botched is the word, for sure. Consider Eoin Clarke’s (Tory Fibs) discussion of the current situation, below:

https://twitter.com/ToryFibs/status/1065959511888932864

https://twitter.com/ToryFibs/status/1065964946150907904

https://twitter.com/ToryFibs/status/1065998065247707136

It is no great leap from this to Carole Hawkins’s conclusion:

But Paul Mason still has hope:

If you are a UK citizen and you still think there is any hope of dragging the nation away from the precipice, I strongly suggest you give his advice a try.
