It is against this background that Boris Johnson is saying the Living Wage should be spread across the UK. On the face of it, that’s quite noble of him – but it’s really only to give a sop to the workers while bosses take huge salaries as a reward for other people’s efforts.

Britain has the biggest wage gap between rich and poor in the EU, a report has revealed.

And with wide cuts coming under the Tories, it could be set to get worse.

The new study ranked Britain lower than Latvia and Portugal on its Gini Coefficient, which measures the distribution of household income across each country.

The measure for Britain was 0.404 compared to an average measure of 0.346 across Europe – and it would even be worse than the United States if the country was included.

Whilst obviously some jobs should be paid more then otherwise, in most cases there should not be vast pay differences.
