Labour to back EU referendum bill, says Harman – BBC News

Last Updated: May 24, 2015By

This is a good decision from Labour. It reflects many of This Writer’s own doorstep discussions with voters during the general election campaign.

Acting leader Harriet Harman has said Labour will now support plans for an EU referendum by the end of 2017.

Ms Harman told the Sunday Times the change in position came after they “reflected on the conversations we had on doorsteps” during the election.

The PM has pledged to renegotiate a “better deal” for the UK and hold an “in/out” referendum by the end of 2017.

Ms Harman told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show the party would still campaign for the UK to stay in the EU.

The European Court of Human Rights is separate from the EU.

is it? so cameron needs 2 referendums then surely? one for the EU and one for the ECHR? (if he is to introduce his own version of the human rights act.) it also needs making much clearer that these 2 are 2 different things.. cos theres a lot like me who thought the ECHR was involved within the EU. hence my confusion over that.

He was never going to have a referendum on the ECHR; in fact, it seems likely his repeal of the Human Rights Act would just mean that more people would have to go to the European Court.

i didn’t mean he was , i meant wouldn’t he need to? or will it be yet another thing him n his cronies decide and we have to accept with no recourse to having a say on it… his talk of getting rid of the European one and then making a new British human rights act is not exactly making people happy. more fearful yet again of what HIS human rights act will entail. because from past acts/laws etc hes passed, it hasn’t done us much good at the lower end of the class system.in fact its done a hell of a lot of harm and in a lot of cases fatal harm. cannot see us coming out of it all with happy grins on our faces thats for sure,

I think it was in the Conservative manifesto, so he’d say we voted on it already.
