Jeremy Corbyn hails Oldham West and Royton by-election victory – BBC News

Last Updated: December 4, 2015By

What a great result for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party.

By contrast, Nigel Farage’s comment can only be described as being in poor taste.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has hailed a “vote of confidence” in his party after it comfortably held the Oldham West and Royton seat in a by-election.

Its candidate Jim McMahon secured a 10,835-vote majority from UKIP’s John Bickley, and a 62% vote share that was higher than at the general election.

UKIP’s Nigel Farage called the result “perverse” and said there had been reports the postal vote was rigged.

The Conservatives came third, with their vote share down by almost 10%.

The by-election was triggered by the death of long-serving Labour MP Michael Meacher.

Mr McMahon said he had “delivered a result that Michael would be proud of”.

Labour was defending a 14,738 majority from the general election.

While its total majority was lower this time around, it ended up with a higher vote share as the turnout – just over 40% – was lower than at May’s poll.

The full result
Jim McMahon (Labour) – 17,209 (62.11%)
John Bickley (UKIP) – 6,487 (23.41%)
James Daly (Conservative) – 2,596 (9.37%)
Jane Brophy (Liberal Democrat) – 1,024 (3.70%)
Simeon Hart (Green Party) – 249 (0.90%)
Sir Oink A-Lot (Monster Raving Loony) – 141 (0.51%)

To increase the majority of that achieved by Michael Meacher, who was a well liked MP, is a great achievement. It is a real boost for Labour and for Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.

The Tory share of the vote down by almost 10% is also good news.

Tremendous victory and congratulations to Jim McMahon.

Just saw the piece on BBC News Channel. No mention that this is a ringing endorsement for Labour, criticism of Corbyn for only visiting the constituency once implying he was kept away as a liability, emphasis that the campaign focussed on local issues and implications of electoral fraud. Farage interviewed and he claimed that canvassers on one particular street found no one who spoke English, that they’d never heard of Jeremy Corbyn but they were all going to vote Labour(?) also he claimed one ballot box when opened was 99% Labour as if this is a bad thing.

Farage complaining that people with ‘ethnic backgrounds’ creating anomalous results (my paraphrase) because they predominantly vote labour. I’d suggest they look to Labour to protect them from sanctimonious liars like him and his racist bullies.

Tragic that UKIP got such a significant share but this is just the sort of fertile ground for their fear inducing hatemongering.

Most interesting is the abject collapse of the Tory share. Cameron’s support continues to melt away and is particularly vulnerable to the fascist liars.

This was no vote of confidence in Corbyn. You may rmember that at the start of the campaign, a more more left leaning Corbyn supporting candidate was being pressed on the constituency fom central office. The constituency rejected him and took the local boy. If anything it shows that moderates are more likely to be elected.

Does it ease your mind to think that way? Then carry on.
The rest of us know that Corbyn’s Labour Party is in great shape after a series of wins against the pathetically weak Conservatives and now also their further-right cousins in UKIP.

I see the Torygraph have decided to distract people from this victory with the usual smears – http://www.thecanary.co/2015/12/04/telegraph-sinks-time-low-despicable-front-page-attack-corbyn-image/
