Quelle surprise: Cameron distorts Corbyn’s words on Calais migrants

Last Updated: January 26, 2016By

David Cameron should mind what he says – at least Jeremy Corbyn has visited a refugee camp in Calais [Image: Michel Spingler/AP].

Tories should be glad David Cameron will be gone in a few years; it is becoming far too easy for UK citizens like This Writer to see through his comments.

For example: His response to Jeremy Corbyn on the Calais refugees.

Corbyn had said the UK should help refugees with a family link to this country. Perhaps this was a dig at Cameron’s own recent policy announcements which are all about pushing away people with such family links, even though they have legitimate reasons to come here – wives of UK citizens, for example.

Cameron distorted this by suggesting Corbyn was saying there is a “direct access” route into the UK – for all migrants.

That simply isn’t true.

Nor is it true that Corbyn’s suggestion would make Calais a magnet for even more migrants. How many people does Cameron think have family links to UK citizens? Has he checked his facts?

Of course not. He prefers to squeak first and ask questions later.

David Cameron has brushed off Jeremy Corbyn’s calls for the UK to help more refugees in Calais, saying it would make the French border a magnet for more migrants.

The prime minister said the Labour leader’s comments suggested he supported “an entirely open-door migration policy”.

Following visits to camps in Dunkirk and Calais at the weekend, Corbyn said he thought the UK should do more to help refugees with a family link to Britain to claim asylum, and pressed Cameron to take a “more human” approach.

However, Cameron said this would simply encourage expansion of the camps.

“I think it would be a very bad move to make Calais a magnet for even more people to come by saying there was some sort of direct access from Calais into the UK, as Jeremy Corbyn seems to be saying. That is the wrong approach,” he said.
