Tories: Cuts Can’t Be Savage, Because No-One’s Died in the Street – Beastrabban\’s Weblog
Be warned about this one: it’ll make you really sick and furious, writes the Beast. He writes:
It’s another piece from Private Eye for the 4th to 17th October 2013, this time from the magazine’s ‘HP Sauce’ column. It reports how members of the Tories’ ‘Free Enterprise Group’ dined out at the Conservative conference that year at the largesse of SAB Miller, a beer company eager for avoiding paying tax.
Aren’t they all?
Much more infuriating is the blasé attitude of the Tory diners themselves to the effect of the cuts, and the complete disconnection from the way they were killing people. Here’s the story.
Conference delegates in Manchester frustrated by David Cameron’s coalition compromises could find a more red-blooded Conservatism at the jam-packed fringe meeting of the Tory “Free Enterprise Group”.
MPs Kwasi Kwarteng, Andrew Leadsom, Chris Skidmore and Dominic Raab talked about the really vigorous cuts they want. Skidmore claimed existing cuts weren’t really “savage” because “no one’s lying dead in the street”, while Raab recommended halving the number of government departments ” because existing cuts were only “relatively modest”.
Mike over at Vox Political, Tom Pride and Johnny Void [have] recorded the deaths of two men after they were sanctioned by Ashton-Under-Lyme jobcentre. One of the men was homeless.
So, Skidmore, people really are lying dead in the street thanks to your policies.

You’re right Mike this beggars belief. These smug, arrogant toffs really piss me off. We all know this is how they feel but they must have had a common sense bypass to actually say it! Who am I kidding – they’ve been getting away with this sort of crap for so long that we’ve all grown immune to it.
I thought a fella did die on the street at least I heard of one because he was sanctioned. So already he is wrong anyway. In time though it will become visible on the street because they are leaving people with little choice on where they can go. If they are not extremely lucky to find work, what else is there, without a safety net?
The article does mention the person who died on the street, in Ashton Under Lyne. He was mentioned in a blog article by The Poor Side of Life and I subsequently wrote articles on the death, along with others.
yeah but I didn’t read it all, and thought I read about that guy somewhere, no dishonour to him but I can’t keep up with all these names of people who have died there are so many. Its true though they tell lies, blatant barefaced lies. Just so they can carry on as they want to, rather than do what is right. As it is if I had no family or if they didn’t care, I’d be one of them. I’d have either starved to death or died as this fella had, on the street.
We didn’t have his name, but his story was referenced towards the end of the excerpt I quoted.
well said Maria
This is what Aneurin Bevan said in 1948:-
“No amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party that inflicted those bitter experiences on me. So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin. They condemned millions of first-class people to semi-starvation. Now the Tories are pouring out money in propaganda of all sorts and are hoping by this organised sustained mass suggestion to eradicate from our minds all memory of what we went through. But, I warn you young men and women, do not listen to what they are saying now.”
Today, 67 years later, absolutely nothing has changed and Nye Bevan’s words are as relevant today as they were all those years ago.
A good tory is a dead and buried one
