Victims of disability hate crime are still being let down, report claims | Society | The Guardian

Last Updated: May 23, 2015By

This Guardian report has received very little publicity and few shares. Let’s change that, shall we?

Disabled people are still people, and hate crime is still crime.

Letting these acts slide just gives an unfriendly government more reason to persecute the most vulnerable people in our society.

Victims of disability hate crimes are being failed by police, prosecutors and the probation service, according to a report by inspectors.

Despite earlier recommendations on improving the way criminal justice agencies help those targeted and attempts to drive up the reporting of incidents, it found that insufficient progress has been made.

If this was race hate or homophobic crimes there would have been an outrage, quite rightly. Why the silence here..?

Maybe the media know they have to shoulder some of the blame with their persistent anti benefit narrative. As a quick example, today on 5* we had, consecutively:

    Benefits: My Big Benefits Family

    Benefits: Too Fat To Work

    Benefits and Bypasses

    On Benefits and Proud

    Gypsies On Benefits and Proud

    That was this afternoon’s viewing.
