In this writer’s opinion, this row is inconsequential.

It doesn’t matter if the next UK prime minister is a mother or not – she’ll definitely be a nasty piece of work.

Andrea Leadsom has apologised to Theresa May after she was accused of suggesting being a mother made her a better candidate for prime minister.

The energy minister told the Daily Telegraph: “I’ve already said to Theresa how very sorry I am for any hurt I have caused.”

The row broke out after Mrs Leadsom said having children meant she had “a very real stake” in Britain’s future.

She later said having children had “no bearing on the ability to be PM”.

Mrs Leadsom made her original comments during an interview in the Times, in which she discussed her bid to become the next leader of the Conservative Party, and therefore the UK’s next prime minister.

The article quoted Mrs Leadsom as saying Mrs May, the home secretary who is her opponent in the leadership race, “possibly has nieces, nephews, lots of people.

“But I have children who are going to have children who will directly be part of what happens next”.

I’d hardly heard of Leadsom until the referendum. She’s one of the poorest and least impressive people I’ve ever heard. How one earth did she manage to get into parliament? Her performance since standing for tory leader has been rock bottom.

The Tory history of ‘using’ children for their own ends is legion, and, they never learn.

The fact Andrea has withdrawn from the leadership vote might be due to background wheelin and dealing ie will May now be offering Andrea a key government position to pacify the fear that the Cons will now be working to undo the Brexit vote with one of their own now in the driving seat. Time and decisions will tell. Interesting way of getting your people in power without the need for membership votes. Maybe the Eagle and her unfaithful mates will try the same trick by finding some tacky small print to keep Jeremy out of the race and win by default.
