Call a psychiatrist! The new Tory candidate for David Cameron’s old seat is delusional
David Cameron, former MP for Witney in Oxfordshire, and also a former prime minister, imposed so much deprivation on his home county that members of his own family stepped in to complain.
He then offered to devote the time of members of the prime minister’s staff to solving these issues in a move that was pilloried as unconstitutional – and also unfair.
As prime minister, he has overseen the imposition of austerity measures that have deprived schools of vital funding, stripped social services to the bone, led to the deaths of thousands of sick and/or disabled benefit claimants, made the courts too expensive for ordinary people, and delivered much of the NHS into the hands of private, profit-making corporations.
And his potential replacement, Conservative candidate Robert Courts, thinks he was a “brilliant MP and public servant”!
This is a man who must never get near Parliament.
Unfortunately, it seems almost certain that he’ll get the job, since he can command favourable coverage from papers like The Guardian, that are supposed to be impartial.
The article on the Witney by-election, quoted below, devotes no less than 10 of its 11 paragraphs to Mr Courts.
Labour candidate Duncan Enright gets four words and Liberal Democrat Liz Leffman six.
Green candidate Larry Sanders, brother to former Democrat candidate in the US presidential election Bernie, gets a whole sentence in which the Graun neglects to mention he is nothing to do with the TV comedy The Larry Sanders Show.
Sadly, This Writer doubts that Mr Enright will do the Labour Party any good if he gets elected. He is a Corbyn-sceptic who said the Labour leader should step down after the result of the EU referendum on June 23.
To my mind, this makes him either far too easily-influenced or a willing participant in a lie – as we all know Mr Corbyn contributed strongly to Labour’s majority vote in favour of remaining in the EU. If other party leaders had fared as well, then Brexit would not be happening. But some minds, it seems, are tightly closed on this matter.
One wonders whether this choice really represents the feeling among the Labour Party in Witney. When he fails, will anybody dare to say a pro-Corbyn candidate might have been a better idea?
As for Ms Leffman, I wonder how her local Citizens Advice office feels about the fact that she is a trustee being used as a reason to vote for her? That is the only notable fact I have (so far) been able to unearth about her.
In summary, This Blog cannot advise the voters of Witney in this matter.
It turns out that while Larry Sanders isn’t a comedian, the other three major party candidates most certainly are.
The Conservatives have selected a barrister to be their candidate for David Cameron’s Witney constituency.
The former prime minister triggered a byelection this month, after he quit parliament so as not to be a distraction to Theresa May’s government.
Robert Courts, 37, was chosen on Thursday night to run as the Tory candidate for the constituency of Witney.
Speaking after his selection, Courts said he was hugely honoured and paid tribute to Cameron.
He said: “For the last 15 years we have had a brilliant MP and public servant in David Cameron and it is wonderful that he and his family plan to stay local.
“I believe it is vital that Witney and west Oxfordshire residents continue to have a strong local voice in parliament, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that residents’ views and concerns are heard.”
Courts has been a West Oxfordshire district councillor since 2014 and was described by the Conservative party as a “devoted champion for the area”. He will be going up against two other West Oxfordshire councillors – Duncan Enright for Labour and Liz Leffman for the Liberal Democrats. He will also be facing the Greens’ candidate Larry Sanders, a retired Oxford lecturer and elder brother of Bernie Sanders, the former US Democratic presidential candidate.

Be fair Mike he is a tory so he really does believe that the smart nasty little expensively educated turd is some sort of a god figure
Duncan Enright would certainly be preferable to any Tory, but Witney is a safe Tory stronghold, so little chance of it anyway. At least my daughter and her husband will vote for Enright.
“I believe it is vital that Witney and west Oxfordshire residents continue to have a strong local voice in parliament, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that residents’ views and concerns are heard.”
Heard but no concerns will be acted on and nothing will change.
To be fair, I spoke to somebody from that constituency, in 2010, before the election and was told that Call-Me-Dave was a very good constituency M.P. and how the person didn’t want him to win the election, because they would lose him. Evidently, as Prime Minister, he became something else.
