No, Paul Nuttall, it isn’t a smear campaign if the allegations are correct
The latest story about Paul Nuttall, who shouldered aside other possibles to become UKIP’s candidate in Thursday’s by-election, is that his website published incorrect claims that he was a board member of a vocational training charity.
An article published on his website in September 2009 claimed that Nuttall had accepted an invitation to join the board of the North West Training Council (NWTC).
However, the organisation’s chief executive, Paul Musa, said that, while Nuttall had visited the NWTC several years ago, he had never served on the board. “Mr Nuttall was never invited to become a board member of NWTC as this would need to be a directive of the NWTC board, who he never met,” he said in an email.
Nuttall’s name does not appear on any documentation filed by the NWTC with either Companies House or the Charity Commission.
This is not the first time Mr Nuttall’s website – for which he is responsible, not any of the other members of UKIP, remember – has published falsehoods.
Recently he came under fire for claiming he was at the Hillsborough tragedy and close friends of his lost their lives there.
And several years ago, part of the site that promoted his desire for the National Health Service to be privatised was taken down – because he had changed his story to one of support for the national treasure.
UKIP’s response to the current issue defies belief. Replying to inquiries by the Guardian, a spokesman accused the paper of running a politically-motivated campaign against Mr Nuttall – apparently on the grounds that the Guardian supports the Labour Party.
The Guardian stopped supporting the Labour Party many years ago – and often comes under criticism from This Site and others for apparent bias against Labour.
Still, when UKIP has a story, that party tends to run with it, no matter how blindingly stupid it is. Referring to the claims about Mr Nuttall, the spokesman continued: “In our view, this shows how scared the Labour Party must be of his electoral appeal.”
As deflection attempts go, that wasn’t even worth the time it took to say it.

Everyone in Nuttall’s “team” seem as deranged as the man himself.
The only thing Nuttall is sorry about is being exposed as a liar and a fraud. Obviously he is now starting to feel less sorry for himself and more bitter towards those who exposed his extremely unpleasant lies.
He’d make a great tory! UKIP, the right wing party for working class idiots who blame foreigners, poor people, the disabled, the sick, women, gays and everyone else for theirs and the country’s woes!
He used to be a Tory.
I’m surprised they let him go, he’s a perfect fit!
