How can we say we don’t support hate when it is all our government and newspapers preach?

Last Updated: June 20, 2017By

Here’s a noble sentiment about the Finsbury Park terror attack, from Good Morning Britain‘s Susanna Reid:

Ms Reid was referring, of course, to the Finsbury Park terror attack in which a van was driven into a group of Muslims who were providing first aid to an elderly man who had collapsed at a bus stop near Finsbury Park Mosque. The attack injured 10 people and the elderly man died at the scene.

A man identified as 47-year-old Darren Osborne has been arrested in relation to the attack.

It is notable that the incident is being treated as a terror attack against Muslims, in contrast with those that have been committed by people identifying as Muslims (although it is debatable whether many people of that religion would accept the claim). Ms Reid’s tweet asserts – rightly – that everybody should stand against such acts of hate, no matter who commits them.

What a shame that neither our Conservative (non-)government nor our right-wing newsrags agree.

Here are some newspaper front pages promoting hatred against Muslims:

The Muslim Council of Britain has warned that newspapers like those pictured above are spreading hate.

Miqdaad Versi, assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, told Sky News: “We have national newspapers spreading hate and talking about how less Islam is the answer to terrorism that we face right now.

“These people are spreading hate against Muslims and people might be responding to that hate, talking about less Islam, and [something like this attack] may be the result.”

Here’s the result:

Look at the way the alleged attacker is being portrayed:

https://twitter.com/PLJK1984/status/877096545291821057

There was an attempt to excuse him on the grounds that he has mental health problems (and let’s remember that he hasn’t been found guilty of any crime yet):

Meanwhile, Tommy Robinson, founder of the anti-Muslim English Defence League, appeared on Ms Reid’s own show – Good Morning Britain – sparking outrage (no, that doesn’t make Susanna Reid a hypocrite; she is unlikely to have anything to do with the bookings):

And prime minister (she says) Theresa May has also come under fire for her hypocritical comments about standing up to hate crime.

“There has been far too much tolerance of extremism over many years,” said Mrs May.

“It is a reminder that terrorism, extremism and hatred take many forms; and our determination to tackle them must be the same whoever is responsible.”

She added that the attack was “every bit as sickening” as those in Manchester and London.

But the Great British public aren’t having any of that from her. As a member of the Conservative Government that the UK has been forced to endure for the past seven years, Mrs May is responsible for spreading a culture of hatred and division against anybody the Tories decided should be the enemy of the day – and we have not forgotten.

Here are some of the responses she has received:

Thankfully for our national sanity, it seems the widespread response has been one of anger towards the attacker and sympathy for the attacked – as it should be:

Perhaps this should be the last word:

If the murderer is Muslim he or she is a terrorist. If the murderer is a white he/she is “deranged”, “mentally unstable”, etc. The right wing politicians and newspapers have been inciting animosity and hatred for years now – and they are getting away with it.

I should point out that there are white Muslims, you know.

Is it my misunderstanding or should there be a “not” in there, Mike? Sorry to be so pedantic.

We have one of the worst range of tabloid newspapers in the world. Full of hate, spite and disinformation they are intolerable in a decent society. And yet they go on, day by day, dripping their poison into our national life.

And it’s not just Muslims who are targeted – it’s the Lib dems and anybody to the left of them. Also sneered at and ridiculed are liberals in general, the welfare state (scroungers’ charter) the unions, political correctness and health and safety to name just a few.

Our press and editors such as Dacre are out of control. How can we make our media honest? When cricitised, they inevitably plead freedom of the press with all of the hypocrisy they can muster. Is it too much to ask for the press to either control themselves, or face enormous consequences When they lie deliberately and seriously?

No one seems to consider the atrocities perpetrated by the muslims themselves, and the apparent acceptance by the muslim community at large, as having a large part of causation of this action. I was very impressed by the Imam, who is almost certainly part of the majority not the brainless minority.

No atrocities have been committed by everybody following the religion of Islam. None at all.
The Muslim community at large is revolted by those committed by a tiny minority of people claiming to act in their name.
Please do not post racist tripe on my site.
