The continuing Grenfell Tower tragedy shows us every day that Tories rule for the rich, not in the national interest
Of course it crossed This Writer’s mind that there may have been more people in Grenfell Tower than the 600 on the tenants register.
I didn’t mention it because of the immediate priorities of reporting the disaster – and perhaps a little because the right-wingers among us were foaming at the mouth to accuse Lefties like me of fake news and scaremongering.
So it heartened me to see the put-down at the end of this Twitter exchange:
https://twitter.com/lilyallen/status/876021566374543360
The full comment reads: “Also the actual death toll (told to me by someone in the council) is 370 and expected to rise to around 600. Makes sense when the tower is a low income tower with overcrowded homes. So 400-600 residents was the ‘official’ estimate. The real estimate including the immigrants and unofficial residents is believed to be 700. And how many are accounted for? About 100? They just don’t want the real number to get out! They don’t want us to start a revolution but change is what we need. All those deaths will not and should not be belittled for the Conservatives’ gain. They killed almost everyone in that tower. All those donations… but who’s even alive to receive them?”

And the put-down:
Yes, you know, humans, with hearts and eyes and skin and souls and families.

Lily was the one who first raised the issue of the misreporting of the actual number of deaths, on Channel 4 News last week.
A little progress has been made, it seems, with 68 luxury flats provided to accommodate people who were rendered homeless by the blaze:
Sixty-eight apartments in luxury block near site of Grenfell Tower acquired to house fire survivors, government says https://t.co/ODq5zKhck9

This was a result of campaigning by the Labour Party:

And what was the response of the rehoused Grenfell residents’ new neighbours?
https://twitter.com/Wirral_In_It/status/877641258793017344
Presumably these ‘luxury flat residents’ would support the comment above, about residents that shouldn’t be there?
Look at these comments, from a lady called ‘Maria’:
One woman, who bought her flat two years ago, told the Guardian: “We paid a lot of money to live here, and we worked hard for it.
“Now these people are going to come along, and they won’t even be paying the service charge.”
Yes, that’s right. Focus on the service charge. That’s the important part. Never mind that for all anybody knows, the rehoused Grenfell residents have worked hard too. It’s just that, due to the way the system currently works, they received less reward.
And why were the former Grenfell Tower residents allocated this luxury flats? Could it be a response to this revelation?
Revealed: Theresa May schmoozed Tory donors as #GrenfellFire victims faced homelessness https://t.co/36M5tOt2SB pic.twitter.com/VKjyhJLMK8
— HuffPost UK Politics (@HuffPostUKPol) June 20, 2017
The report states:
Theresa May was schmoozing multi-millionaire Tory donors at the Savoy while Grenfell Tower residents faced homelessness and talks with the DUP stalled, HuffPost UK can reveal.
The Prime Minister spent 50 minutes hobnobbing with Conservative backers at the lavish London hotel on Tuesday, despite aides insisting she was too “busy” for other engagements.
Her appearance comes in the wake of recent terror attacks, as Brexit negotiations open and the day before the Queen’s Speech is put before Parliament.
It seems that, yet again, Mrs May didn’t act of her own accord – she was pushed.
Why?
Because Mrs May doesn’t rule in the national interest; she rules in the interests of people like ‘Maria’ and the tweeter known as AnnieKisses4Me.

Just a little something that may seem unrelated but bear with me.
The Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow was built to a very high standard for rich Saudi’s to be treated but they ran out of money and the NHS bought it cheap.
I’m former nurse and was treated there and I’ve never seen such a wonderful place and such happy staff – the change to a top quality environment made them more industious and willing to help with the smallest of chores without a grumble or complaint, I was a little jealous that I wasn’t trained in such a place.
Who is to say that giving top grade accomodation to the Grenfell residents won’t have a similar effect and end up enhancing their lives, leading to contentment and motovation rather that “bringing down the tone of the neighbourhood” ?
I just hope that they get the proper support that they should have all along.
Those people, them, them over there look…
I can imagine these snobs will be well p****d orff
with “these people” Good riddance..
Could any of the firemen sneak out some pics and video of (I don’t like to use these terms but..)
body bags etc?
I wanted to send my usual “like” Mike, but for several days now when I sign-in and click nothing happens. Any ideas what’s could be causing this?
None at all, sorry.
I suspect they are hiding the true figures in the hope we will eventually forget about the appalling tragedy and move on. If so then it is yet another example of the lack of good judgement by May and her nasty cohorts.
Twitters a pubic space you put vile comments out there your gonna get a responce no doubt annakisses4me and maria are being and acting …..super victims…..today well..to bad….there comments just show how divided things are…realy realy sad but on a brighter note i went to the grenfell protest in parliment sq yesturday …those young kids such spark such guts suck determination and fearlessness those kids lost loved ones friends everything ……they are the leaders the people of tommorow not the likes of maria or the foul tories
Of course some of these uncaring rich people were there at the time offering help and clothing etc, but hey don’t let facts get in the way of the anti rich rant, this sort of divisive reaction helps no one.
I wanted to throw up listening to May this morning saying that nobody should have to live in unsafe housing. This, the leader of the party that slammed down a bill asking that landlords should be required to ensure their properties were fit for habitation.
If this is what “the mother of parliaments” has produced surely it’s about time we considered an alternative or at the very least even more restrictions on politicians?
