Theresa May ‘has set back decades of work’ for peace in Northern Ireland

Talks on a new power-sharing agreement between the DUP and Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland have broken down into bitter recriminations over the grubby deal signed by DUP leader Arlene Foster to prop up Theresa May’s minority Tory government.

Here’s Sinn Fein’s Michelle O’Neill, explaining the situation to the BBC:

Sinn Fein has accused Theresa May of allowing the DUP to block rights already given to those living elsewhere in the UK from being granted to Northern Irish citizens.

There are differences over a possible Irish language act that would protect the rights of Irish speakers in Northern Ireland, and the DUP has also refused to support calls to legalise same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland.

But the real problem is the fact that Mrs May has bent over backwards to give a disproportionate amount of power to the DUP, upsetting the carefully-balanced power-sharing deal that brought peace to the Province nearly 20 years ago.

It is a serious political mis-step from a woman who has proved herself a pathetic amateur rather than the political genius she claimed to be when she called her snap election in April.

Mrs May has, indeed, “set back decades of work”. How long will it be before that ground can be reclaimed?

Tories really do not care who they hurt or what damage they do to anything or anybody, just as long as they can cling to power.

Being so politically inept, it really makes you wonder how she clung to power after being appointed Home Sec, but then she was just one of many total failures in cabinet. The bar was set low with Osborne as chancellor and the whole Downing St back room stuffed full of old Etonians sealed our fate.

So are we saying that politicians brought peace, or was it more to do with the citizens of Ulster becoming sick and fed up of the criminal violence?

No Barry it was people talking to each other the reverent Paisley and Jerry Adams etc talking across the decide trying to find common ground oh and helped by the contacts of Jeremy Corbin! Yes the people wanted peace but it was the politicians talking this grubby deal whould alwase break the northern Ireland agreement that’s why there are court cases over this currently going through the due process.

If she had a ounce of sense she whould give up call a election and be done with it. Instead the country is being betrayed in multiple ways with week and stupid negotiations over brexit and the mess in northern Ireland all can be laid at one persons feet.
