Something’s amiss in Trumpton!

It seems somebody has launched a (fake) branch of UKIP in the (fictional) town, and run-of-the-mill* party members aren’t happy about it!

According to the Huffington Post, UKIP MEP David Coburn has urged his fellow members to block and report the Twitter feed of the imaginary town’s UKIP branch, in a bid to have it banned.

His knee-jerk demand is yet another example of a UKIP member shooting himself in the foot. The account, @Trumpton_UKIP, isn’t causing any harm – unless its readers don’t know the difference between realpolitik and gentle satire.

As the paper says, in a message cleverly hidden as part of the story’s web address: calm-down-david-it’s-only-satire.

* It was very hard to devise a description for ordinary UKIP members. ‘Non-puppet’ doesn’t work because there’s widespread opinion that UKIP is a Tory front or – increasingly – vice versa. ‘Human’ doesn’t work because many of them have displayed inhumanity towards others. ‘Real-world’ doesn’t cut it either – how many UKIP members do you think actually live in the real world that the rest of us recognise?
