Treasury has still not signed off universal credit – Benefits and Work
Universal credit is still on the amber-red warning list of the Major Projects Authority and the business case for the new benefit has still not been signed off by the Treasury, it was revealed at a public accounts committee meeting yesterday, according to Benefits and Work.
According to evidence given by civil servants, a ‘twin track’ approach to delivering the benefit could lead to all but £34m of a £697m IT programme being written off, if the new digital system now being trialled is a success. However, so far only 17 claimants have used the new digital system.
The Treasury says that it may be next summer before it can decide whether to sign off the business case for universal credit.

This is a laugh. Or would be but for the amount of money that is being wasted on a failed idea. lets play a game shall we to see if its viable? a] name 1 major IT project that involves a ever changing data set? Banks [simple idea, money in money out – only comparable system, and a oversimplified one at that – how many bank system failures have there been in the past year?] How about NHS System … we all know how that’s ended – FAIL, b] is it stress tested to see if it can handle the data load – to date – FAIL, c] is it fit for purpose – can handle all permuntations thrown at it – FAIL, d] is it doable? Current estimates say completion at current take up rate in 700 years – FAIL. e] Will it saves money as intended [See d: above] – FAIL.
Jeff, you’re right he will but someone will have to sign off the accounts – and that bill for what 633M, minus 30M to be carried over to new system will still have to be paid — one way or the other leaving a 630M black hole in the accounts.
This will get intersting – as the Minister HE has to sign off on that. All Gov Depts MUST sign off on their accounts, its part of the Act which brings them into being.
