Tory plan to censor TV shows would be ‘threat to freedom of speech’ says minister – Mirror Online

To this writer, it looks as though the Tories are stage-managing arguments between themselves, in order to make a final (already-determined) result look good.

They don’t have the Liberal Democrats around any more so they have to rely on their own people.

Will these measures go through? Probably.

Do they undermine freedom of speech? Definitely.

But then, the Tories are the party of restriction.

Theresa May drew up the proposals following the murder of drummer Lee Rigby in 2013, and says the measures are intended to “confront head-on the poisonous Islamist extremist ideology”.

But critics say the bill will be a licence to silence any opinion the Government doesn’t like.

Referring to a march following the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack in France, Emma Norton, of human rights group Liberty, said: “Just a few months after the Prime Minister marched in Paris in defence of free speech he proposes measures to help shut it down.

She added: “You don’t protect democracy by undermining the freedoms that sustain it.”

Censorship is a very dangerous path to take and something which I associate with countries ruled by a dictator. With freedom of speech the public can make up their own minds as to what they consider right or wrong. It is always better to know what your enemy is thinking or planning rather than to block it.

The Tories already seem to have a mindset that anyone who is critical of them is tantamount to being a traitor. This will give them justification for silencing and criticism of them and their nasty policies.

Can it really be true that some citizens do not love Big Brother?
