Number of families forced to move from home area doubles in a year

Last Updated: October 3, 2015By

The numbers of homeless families sent away from their home area has more than doubled over the past year, with people being sent hundreds of miles across the country.

Among the long-distance transfers were 41 London households re-homed in Birmingham, and 14 more across the rest of the West Midlands metropolitan area, as well as 12 sent to Greater Manchester.

As of June 2012, there were 8,170 households homed outside of their home local authority, by June this year, it had risen to 17,640.

Dan Wilson-Craw from pressure group Generation Rent said the Government needs to give councils support to invest in new housing.

He said: “Uprooting families harms all the communities involved. Children’s education is disrupted if they have to change or travel further to school.

“The areas these families are moved to tend to have poorer job markets, which is bad for both the new arrivals and job seekers who already live there. And by leaving their old areas behind, they lose long-time friends, colleagues and neighbours.”

being someone who spent 7 years living away from my home town i can well appreciate the devastation this causes. i have been back up north over 18 years but not having a young school age family, not being of working age, being disabled, i have not been in contact with anyone in the normal ways you make friends. neighbours were fine to start with but we have nothing in common.so trying to keep any semblance of friendship going ws doomed to fail at some point. its a chance that you will make new friends. i made them down south through the church, and where i worked. tried the church up here. felt totally cold towards the people there
(or was it them being cold towards me? i really do not know) whatever its vry hard at any age to be moved away from family and friends though the younger you are the easier it is eventually but does take time even then.

Absolute disgrace this has to be the worst government in our history. IDS sent his side kick Patel to answer questions with the Scottish government on the damage and hardship his welfare reforms are causing, misery to millions.

Spineless weasel. Cameron has the backbone of a squid, Osborne has no backbone whatsoever, Daddy’s little spoilt brat, Daddy probably bought his degree via a huge donation to the college.

The Tories attitude reminds me a little of the Scottish Clearances or the potato famine in Ireland. To be uprooted from your community, school, workplace, family and friends without any say in the matter is soul destroying. How is this going to help hard working families who’ve lost their support network because there isn’t enough social housing to go round?

More ethnic cleansing of the working class of the UK by the Nazi Tory Party!
